Avoiding the Social Media Time~Suck

When I started this blog, I didn’t realize the investment in time, thought and patience that it would require in order to make it successful (and by successful, I mean, read by more than just my immediate friends and family).  Honestly, this started off as just a way for me to write down some thoughts, keep a daily journal of interesting things that happened to me throughout the day (looking back, I realize that my more personal posts are seriously lacking), etc.  But then I started writing reviews and offering giveaways and that’s when things started to change.

I realized that in order for my reviews and giveaways to be successful, I had to attract attention to my blog which meant I had to step up my game.  I joined a few forums, started posting something new every day, lit up Twitter, created a Facebook page and basically started running myself ragged.  Over time, I realized that this “little” hobby was starting to suck up more and more of my time.

And since I started the SITS ProBlogger Challenge even more of my time is sifting away “like sands through an hour glass…”  And apparently, I’m not the only one who needs help avoiding the social media time~suck.  A lot of challenge participants are wondering how they’re supposed to balance blog maintenance with everything in their daily lives because all of the tips have proven to be just a bit overwhelming.  Granted, I realize this is a challenge and not something I’d engage in every day unless it was my job but still

Anyway, I stumbled across this article by Katie Urbain, in which she discusses six ways to waste your time on social media.  Has Katie been reading my mind?  The article offers six tips for managing your online presence and still remaining productive during your work day.  As I read through the list of social media time~sucks, my head hit the desk.

I think the biggest takeaway from the article was that I can’t be everywhere nor can I can keep up with everything, so don’t even try.  And with that I’m shutting down my computer for the night to spend time with my family.  I will catch up on with Day 12 of the challenge tomorrow.

Great post! I am really struggling with this right now. Especially the blogs I follow. I was gone this weekend and have 900! posts on my reader. It’s just impossible, but I feel bad unfollowing people. Argh!

Ugh! Jessica Anne, 900! Girl, that would have been enough to make me shut down the computer. LOL But I do understand. I always feel bad when I unfollow blogs too but I have to be realistic, reading every single post isn’t practical.

Well, I went through my reader last night and unfollowed a bunch. Much more manageable and blogs I actually like to read. Then, this morning, I got a comment from someone I unfollowed who is still following me. Ahh, the guilt! :)

Smart girl! Shut Social Media down more often. It is a tool to be used and enjoyed, not a race to be kept up with. Maybe spend 20 minutes on it at the beginning, middle and end of the day? That way you are keeping up with things without being overwhelmed by it.

Alyna, that’s pretty much what I’m doing. Cutting it down to 3 times a day and only for short periods. This weekend is different because I have a bit of free time but, yeah, online time will be regulated.

I completely identify with this!!! I find myself wanting to check Twitter/Facebook/etc constantly! But, I have hid almost everyone except close friends & family as far as updates go, so it’s usually pretty quick & painless.

I use Google Reader to manage my blog subscriptions. I’ve got “Blog Watch” (about 20 of my can’t-miss blogs), “Books”, and “Hide”. I’ll often mark my “hide” blogs as read without feeling guilty this way – because it’s so quick and easy to do! I guess it helps me keep my sanity! Now, to cut back on how often I’m checking everything… and not getting tempted to read my “hide” blogs…

I realized it was out of control when I started checking my cell in the middle of the night to see if anyone responded to me on Twitter or Facebook. Yikes! I like the idea of hiding things too. That way I can keep my blogs but not feel the need to read each and every one of them every day. Good idea.
