Day 12: Something I’m OCD About
Ha! This is an easy one. I’m hyper~organized. I used to be in the Army and one of the first things they drilled into my head was organization ~ socks, tees, undies, they all had to be folded/rolled up so they were the same length as a dollar bill. I remember taping my things to the bottom of my drawer so they wouldn’t roll around when the drawer closed and using toilet paper roll inserts to keep my tees smooth. There was nothing worse than failing an inspection. Anyway, that need for organization has stuck. I often tell my children that I could get dressed in the dark and…

Do You Have “Couple Friends”?
Do you remember that episode of “King of Queens” when Carrie and Doug lose Deacon and Kelly to another couple who has kids so they spend the entire episode trying to find a replacement couple? Well, Tony and I have been trying to find that couple for years now. Ok, maybe I haven’t been actively participating in the search but Tony has done his fair share of couple scouting. And he finally hit the jackpot a couple of nights ago… There are these two couples from his job that we’ve been trying to get together with for a couple of months now but due to scheduling conflicts, someone always had…

I’m Back, Sort Of
I don’t know what happened but I caught something that totally kicked my butt. Giving my kids and these college students the side~eye ’cause I know whatever funky little virus I picked up had to have come from these walking talking petri dishes. Thursday evening, I left work and I felt fine. Friday morning I was A~OK, hanging out with the husband but feeling a little tired, around 3 PM, “something” hit me like a bolt of lightening and I wanted to collapse. At 4 PM, my husband remembered that we had plans to attend a going away dinner for our friends. Dead woman walking. I ended up spending all…

Day 10: A Picture of Me 10 Years Ago
I had just finished cooking my first Thanksgiving meal and I was so proud of myself… What were you doing 10 years ago?

Day 8: A Photo that Makes Me Sad
My dad died unexpectedly a few years ago and, unfortunately, this was the last picture that the four of us ever took together. My parents divorced when we were young and, after living with my dad for about a year, I moved with my mom, sisters and stepfather to Italy and didn’t see my dad again until I was an adult. My dad was an incredible artist and musician who never failed to make me laugh. I miss and love him dearly.

From Stepmother to Friend, It Can Happen
This afternoon as I was driving to work, I started scanning the radio for something to listen to. Usually I listen to the oldies station (nothing like singing to the top of your lungs to Diana Ross and the Supremes) or I listen to talk radio (that means Rush Limbaugh because he’s the only voice on in the afternoons around here). However, I do listen to Steve Corbett when I get a chance and I watch CNN and Fox News on television. I teach American History and Political Science, I like to be able to present both sides of the argument. Anyway, today I happened to stop on a new christian…

Day 7: A Photo That Makes Me Happy
I love this picture of my family, it was taken about eleven years ago. Every time I see this picture, I smile when I see the way my children used to be: so full of hope and promise. Now I see them as young adults and I’ve been blessed to see the fulfillment of everything that I hoped they’d become and more. Do you have a photograph that makes you smile?

Raunchy Diesel Ad Too Hot for the Brooklyn Law School Library
Um, wow! It takes a lot to make me blush but I have to say, the risqué photographs taken by Diesel in the Brooklyn Law School library are enough to make even this librarian’s bun get tight. The Brooklyn Law School library is reportedly upset about the pictures and the interim dean has sent an email to faculty, staff and students stating as much but my question is this ~ when they gave photographers permission to use their premises for the photographs, did they give them carte blanche? Was no one from the library or college staff on site to make sure things went off without a hitch? And if…

Day 6: Twenty of My Favorite Things
A few of my other favorite things… American flag that was presented to me at my father’s funeral Hanging out with my kids, they make me laugh so my heard my stomach hurts My Droid, this cell phone rocks My house because it’s the first house that my husband and I purchased together A coffee mug that my husband had made for me I use at our favorite coffee shop The color purple because it represents royalty Butterflies because they symbolize transformation and freedom Facebook because it’s allowed me to reconnect with friends from Italy Crawfish, corn and potatoes from roadside stands in Louisiana Turning up the music real loud…

I Hope You Have One Just Like You…
I don’t know about y’all but I grew up in one of those households where kids and parents had a “distant” relationship. We knew that our parents loved us but we weren’t what you’d call “friends.” There was respect and a healthy amount of fear(I think my mom had eyes in the back of her head, read here to find out why) but there was no friendship. And I was ok with that. Really, the last thing I wanted was to be my mom’s pal and I’m pretty certain that she felt the same way. That being said, I used to go out of my way to drive my mother…
