Mamavation Monday on Sunday

Mamavation MondayThis week I have been a calorie counting, exercise logging, SparkPeople app using machine!  Seriously, I’ve learned so much since I downloaded SparkPeople to my Droid (click here for the mobile download for Droid).  For example, I was drinking a large mocha flavored coffee from a popular coffee place every other day or so until I found out that it was accounting for 45% of my allotted caloric intake.  Forty~five percent is a heck of a lot when you want to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and, possibly, a snack.  Needless to say, I have since stopped with the ‘ccinos.  That doesn’t mean I’m never drinking one again, (I cannot give up that mocha goodness) it just means that I have to be more aware of portion control and determine what I’m willing to give up for that treat.

I also learned how much fast food can hurt.  On my way to work the other day I realized that I hadn’t had breakfast or lunch, so I decided to stop and grab some fries, a fish sandwich and a coffee, that was a whopping 814 calories!  Duuuude, that is crazy!  I know this may be purely psychosomatic but I also felt ill the rest of the night.  It may be that I hadn’t had fast food in about a week and it wasn’t settling right or it may have been that I was just sick over how many calories I’d consumed in one meal but I felt YUCK the rest of the night.

My 2 for 1 water exchange has been going real well.  Actually, it’s been going better than expected, I’ve also started to drink more herbal tea (Lipton Cranberry Pomegranate Tea, how do I heart thee…).  I had 1/2 a soda this week and couldn’t finish it.  It was my first soda in about a week.  Way too sweet.

In an effort to keep me even more accountable for my food intake, I’ll be participating in the March Food Diary Challenge hosted by Brooke Lippy.  Nothing like knowing that other people are going to see what you’ve inhaled all day to keep you focused…

I exercised 3 out of 7 days this week and on the days that I didn’t workout, I made sure I went over my step goal (which was 5000 per day).  I know my step goal is low but when you figure I’m a librarian and I don’t spend a lot of time on my feet, I thought I’d start low and work my way up, this way I’m not defeated when I don’t make 10,000 steps.  This week’s goal is 7500 per day.

I’ll tell you now, I didn’t lose any weight but I didn’t gain either.  I’m not upset because I learned something about myself and my eating habits, so I consider this a win.

My Stats:

  • Starting weight:  163.2 lbs
  • Today’s weight:  162 lbs
  • Goal weight:  145 lbs

How was your week?  Did you learn anything surprising about your eating habits?

I think it is good for all of us to go calorie counting crazy every so often to make sure we keep our skills sharp as to knowing how many calories actually pass our lips. The ccino counting for that may kcals is crazy, but a reality we all have now with convenience food.

Great job this week and congratulations on your loss.

Kia, this whole process has been incredible for me. I honestly didn’t realize how *big* the little things are. I think this probably part of the reason for the obesity epidemic, people really don’t realize how many calories they’re eating in one sitting. It’s some scary stuff.

Dang, I didn’t even think about my caffeine kick in the am. Thanks for the heads up!

Learning is an important part of this journey. You can’t move forward without the skills to do it right. Best of luck this week and with your food diary challenge. Great idea to hold you accountable to every bite!

Yes, girl, learning is such a big part of this. Now I’m rattling off the caloric count on everything. LOL But it’s just mind boggling.

I’m so not a tea drinker but I am totally digging the Cranberry Pomegranate Herbal Tea. It’s delish!

I would definitely call your week successful! What an education you gained! The things you learned will make a difference in your future. Ugh, doesn’t fast food do awful things to you?!?

Between the sick stomach and the “sick stomach” I am so done with fast food except for the Wendy’s Apple and Pecan Chicken Salad ~ LOVE. LOL

I’m going to go check out SparkPeople now, thankyou! :)
I’d definitely consider all that you learned this week to be a win! Go you!

Amanda, SparkPeople works well for me because they have an app I downloaded to my Droid. I need to be able to track food immediately or I forget (maybe it’s wishful thinking) but Live Strong also works really well.

Wow really, a librarian?? I always wanted to be a librarian, I almost went to school for library sciences! :) Calorie awareness is SCARY, I must say. When you think about all the things most of us commonly eat on a daily basis, why do we all wonder why the average woman today is a size 14? It’s so easy to become overweight in our society. That being said, becoming aware of the problem creates an even bigger task in avoiding all those calories! It’s an uphill climb, but as long as we stay inspired to say no, it’s only a matter of time before our bodies and our taste buds adjust, and we no longer crave the junk like we used to. Great job on taking control! I hope you have an awesome week ahead! :)

Milo, I absolutely love my job! And I know that I’m one of the blessed few who can say that but it really is one of the most rewarding career choices ~ I get to help people, I learn new things, I”m on top of emerging technologies, it’s crazy good!

You’re right, this calorie awareness thing can blow your dome! I just didn’t realize how many calories were in seemingly small things. Now I’m making better food choices but still… YIKES!

      • Milo

That is SO awesome, I seriously always wanted to be a librarian since I was like… 17. I always thought it was the coolest job in the world, I can only imagine how much you get to learn on a daily basis. Do you have a Masters in Library Science? I’m in a Bachelor program for Organizational Mgmt right now, hoping to get my Masters in LS when this is over.

I have my MLIS which is the same accept they added “Information”. I went through Drexel’s online program for my MLIS. I learned a lot from the program and being able to work on my own schedule worked better for me than being in a classroom. The hardest part was when I had to take stats (I am so not a math person).

I know a few people who transitioned from OM to ML(I)S or vice versa without any problems. If you want to work in an academic library, it always helps to have a Master’s in a secondary subject (especially the sciences).

If you want to know more about the different types of libraries and librarians, I’d recommend taking a look at Library Day in the Life http://librarydayinthelife.pbworks.com/w/page/34943821/Round-6,-January-24th-2011
