The Handwriting Meme

It’s so funny that I stumbled across this meme on Allie’s blog, Wardrobe Oxygen, because Miss 17 and I were just talking about how writing is becoming a lost art.  Seriously, when I teach classes at the college, I just want to dedicate a couple of classes to writing basics ~ you know, mostly how to write so that I can read what the student has written.  As much as I love technology, I hate what it has done to penmanship.

My mother taught me how to print and my father taught me how to write in cursive.  My mother is left handed, I’m right handed.  This was no easy task for her.  She used to turn the paper upside down so that she could write and, well, that’s how I write ~ with my papers so slanted that they may as well be upside down.  My father was an artist in every sense of the word.  I wish that he (or I) had kept some of his sketches as well as some of his writing samples, absolutely beautiful but illegible.  Have you ever tried to read the Declaration of Independence?  That’s what my father’s writing looks like.

Over time I also developed other little quirks that add to the uniqueness of my writing:

  • I love Pilot Precise V5 pens because they offer the sharpest and cleanest point (Pilot people if you stumble across this post and you want to give me a bunch of purple ones, I wouldn’t turn you down.  Call me.)
  • All of my letters have to be the same size (Yes, I’m a tad bit OCD about my writing)
  • Everything slants in the same direction (I am responsible for a lot to the deforestation that has taken place across the US because I would just toss homework away left and right)
  • I will rewrite until things are perfect (What you are about to see is a 3rd attempt, I wanted to do it again but I’m resisting the urge)

The Handwriting Meme

To participate in the meme, all you have to do is write the answers to these questions on a piece of paper:

  1. What’s your name/your blogger name?
  2. What’s your blog’s name/URL?
  3. Write “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”
  4. Favorite quote?
  5. Your favorite song?
  6. Your favorite band/singers?
  7. Anything else you want to say?
  8. Tag three to five other people.

Wow!!! Beautiful handwriting! I’d love to do this too, but gotta admit, after seeing yours… I’m feeling a bit inadequate!

Lisa, you should do it. I rewrote that paper 3 times but I’m like seriously OCD about my writing. I had to stop looking at the cross out line just so I could post it but I really want to rewrite the note. :-)

Yep, we’re definitely long lost sisters! *lol* I write super small and neat. It’s a result of me skipping 3rd grade. Everyone else learned cursive in 3rd grade. So the summer between 2nd and 4th, I practiced cursive with my mother for HOURS everyday. My greatest fear was that I wouldn’t write as well as everyone else when school started and someone would call me a baby.

Oh, and those used to be my favorite pens too, but now I’m hooked on the Pilot P-500, Extra Fine. It’s heaven!! Have you tried those?

Ha! I knew it. LOL And you’re smart too? Yeah, we’re definitely related. I didn’t skip any grades but I did get offered plenty of academic scholarships when I graduated from high school. That’s too funny that you practiced, that’s what my middle one did (she’s a lefty amongst righties).

I’ve never tried the Pilot P~500, Extra Fine. Hmmm…. I’m gonna have to find them. My boss gave me a bunch of purple Pilot Precise V~5 pens when she hired me. They’re her favorite pens too (I think that’s what pushed me over the edge).

Thank you, Allie, and thanks for letting me know about the meme.

I’m pretty anal about my handwriting also, although I’m so used to typing now that my hand gets tired rather quickly. (Isn’t that awful?) What’s weird about me, though, is that I actually have two different handwriting styles: one is slanted and one is straight upright and more rounded. Which one I use depends on what I’m writing or my mood. But I have no idea how or why it came to be in the first place…

Chela, my hand gets tired too. I think it’s a combination of things ~ squeezing the pen too tightly and not writing on a regular basis. I love the big loopy writing. I try it but it doesn’t look as “free” more like I’m trying too hard… I admire people who can write all big and loopy, it looks like bubbles. LOL
