Reggie, knowing what I know of you from your blog, I can so see you staying put. I lived in New Orleans for a bit and in various parts of the south for a while but I never dealt with any of the heavy storms (although a sprinkling in NOLA would cause our campus to flood). I don't think it's the storms that so much bother me but the destruction after the storms ~ that doesn't concern you?

PS
If you ever end up floating down river on CNN, give a sista a shout out! :-)

Exactly. I think if adults decide to stay, they should have to deal with what happens but to put their kids/spouses/first responders at risk? That's absolutely insane and selfish.

Exactly. On CNN there was a couple who were kind of arguing about it because she wanted to leave and he wanted to stay. If he loved his wife, wouldn't he take her fears/concerns under advisement?

Experience it?!? Nah, I don't think so.

I live in Charleston, South Carolina. The storm passed to our east, but I honestly wouldn't be moved by a category 2 storm. I live not that far from the coast and if it had hit us head on, I'd have stayed provided it was just a category 2. Now a 4........yeah, I'd evacuate for that. But I must admit, I was in New Orleans when Andrew hit and I believe that was a category 4. That was a powerful storm. That's the first storm that I remember sitting through, but I've lived in the south for most of my life so I'm sure I've been close to the coast when others hit.

I think that Hurricane Katrina taught many of us to be afraid of storms though and I think it's Katrinized most of the coastal regions to a point where they don't want to be the next New Orleans.

I don't understand those idiots who go surfing when the hurricane winds start blowing, but I do understand some of the stalwarts that refuse to leave their homes.

Preach it! It's just selfish is what it is. And what if you're a parent or wife or husband and you get killed "for the experience"? How does that lift up your children or your spouse? Frustrating.

If we were on the coast, the first time they said we were on the path of the storm I would start packing. I wouldn't think about staying! For the adults who make the informed decision to stay, let them stay. I just don't think they should put children at risk and those who can't make their own decisions.

I can't understand why anyone would want to "ride it out." I always want to err on the side of caution.
