Yarn Along

Yarn Along: Iced Pumpkin ScarfA few weeks ago, my friend, Mylynka from Finding Myself Fit by Forty, posted a picture of herself on Facebook wearing a scarf that I’d made for her so that I could see her in it, this led to a few of her other friends admiring the scarf  and asking about it. After getting some introductions, one of Mylynka’s friends and I worked out a trade ~ a scarf in exchange for some soy candles… I’ve never bartered before but I’m pretty stoked about the idea of exchanging handmade products with someone. There really is something so comforting and, I dunno, homey about knowing that someone used their time and skill to make something for me.  Which has started me thinking about Christmas…

My family and I are not big on the commercial aspects of Christmas because we don’t want the real message of Christmas to get lost behind all the gift giving. Besides, we’re one of those families who wait for special occasions to buy each other things, if we think someone’ll like it and we can afford it, we get it. Anyway, this year, I’m thinking about crocheting gifts for my kids.

I’ve seen other families who have articles of clothing and other memorabilia that has been passed down through the family and I just wonder if this is something that you’ve ever considered?

What are your thoughts on handmade gifts? What about bartering and trading, do you do it?

I’m joining up with Ginny from small things for Yarn Along.  To participate, all you have to do is take a picture of your current crocheting or knitting project along with the book you’re reading and hit the link.  Make sure you visit some of the other participants and share some comment love.

What about you?  What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Love the colors and love giving handmade!  Bartering sounds like a great deal!

I’m making homemade gifts for everybody this year [all of them will be knit].  :-D  I think it’s more fun and meaningful this way.

Exactly! I love knowing that someone made something just for me.

After falling in love with Etsy I now have a love for handmade things. I have recently started making hair bows and a few weeks ago when we went to the mountains a friend of mine introduced me to crocheting. I found it to be soothing and I purchased a book to teach me how. I haven’t started but I’m looking forward to it.

Isn’t Etsy the best? Have you posted pictures of your bows yet? I love your pictures ~ they’re fab! I think crocheting is relaxing.

We’re like you – if we need something, we just buy it. So, the hubbs & I don’t get gifts for each other… just things for the kids.

This year is the first year we’ll be doing homemade gifts for the grandparents. I got a footprint from Phoenix & Ariana and stamped “Merry Christmas” on it. It’s nothing fancy, but something I’m sure they’ll enjoy!

Yeah, people always say that we’re mean or what have you but I’d so much rather have it the way that it is….

That’s so sweet ~ my mom used to do the footprints with the kids, she so loves those sentimental gifts.

I like the idea of bartering, tried to pay for some ironing with apples this year, but didn’t work out! However with handmade stuff, knowing me, I would be paranoid that my handiwork wasn’t up to scratch! But it is an honour to be asked to do something when someone has seen what you can do.

Trust me, I’m a little paranoid ~ I’m not used to anyone other than family members getting my stuff but I’m willing to give it a try.

I love bartering!  I think it’s a great system, and wished more people were comfortable with it. :)

I think with the economy the way it is, it should be the new form of commerce.

Oh, I adore bartering!  It was really how I grew up. My parents were Back to the Landers.  I still have the worst time ever actually paying cash money for something…

How cool. I’m new to this but I’m totally digging it.
