Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #7 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

I have not exercised at all. Last week, our church was crazy busy and I was just making it home from work with enough time to shower, make dinner for the family and get out of the house, so that left little time for anything else. Confession: On days when I haven’t had time to cook, I’ve eaten fast food. This week will also be pretty busy, so I’m going to have to set my alarm a little earlier and get up to do something. Groan I am not a morning person, but I know if I want to see something happen I have to start doing things a bit differently.

#Cinchspiration Weight Loss

Weight Change Since Last Week:  +0.4 lbs

Total Weight Lost: 5 lbs

Goal Weight: 135 lbs

I am pretty happy to see that my slacking didn’t do that much damage, only a 0.4 lb weight gain. I can handle that. But I really want to start seeing the scale moving downwards again.  And getting this message from RunKeeper is a pretty powerful motivator, dontcha think?

Note from Runkeeper

With that in mind, this week, my goals are to:

  • workout daily
  • no matter how short I am on time, eat REAL food
  • increase my strength training
  • drink more water
  • eat more fruits and vegetables

To watch my story unfold, stay tuned as I blog, Facebookvlog, tweet and pin my inches lost. You can follow the Team Cinchspiration conversation on Twitter using #Cinchspiration. I’m also on Instagram, you can follow me here.

Yellow Wedges {Shoe Style Saturday}

by Daenel

Yellow Wedges {Shoe Style Saturday}

This was a pretty long week. I don’t know if I mentioned it here, but we’re in the process of trying to buy a new home and, lemme tell ya, the process is exhausting.

The hubs and I are a realtor’s dream, we know what we want, we find it and we get it. We accept that houses will have things wrong, even new homes, we call it “character”. We try not to nit pick, we talk about changing the things we can and dealing with what we can’t. It’s just that simple…

So this week has been dealing with the butterflies and dragonflies flittering in my stomach while we wait on inspections and appraisals and all the other little details. While it has been an emotional time, it hasn’t been nearly as stressful as it was the first time we bought a home 8 or 9 years ago. For that, I’m incredibly happy.

The plan is to close by 20 August, so, hopefully, on 21 August I’ll have pictures of our new home to post!

Where did your shoes take you this week?

To participate in Shoe Style Saturday, all you have to do is:

  • take a picture of your shoes
  • post them to your blog, flickr or tumblr
  • if you post to Twitter or Instagram, use the hashtag #ShoeStyleSat
  • leave a comment below letting me know you’re linking up
  • visit other participants and leave some comment love

So, come on and show me your femme fatale flats, those sexy stilettos and pin~up peep toes, yes, even your racy runners.

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. That Penn State situation is just getting crazier and crazier. I’m wondering if they’re going to just call it a day and close the school down? Is there any way for them to recover from this? The NCAA has levied all kinds of fines against the school, students are transferring, lawsuits are being filed… In fact, the lawyers for the victim #2 have released an audio of Sandusky offering the guy tickets to the Penn State game if he wants them. Nice. Sandusky ends the call by saying “I love you.” I’m not a violent person but even I want to punch his teeth in. Seriously? His actions are so far removed from love that there is no name for it.

2. And while I’m talking about creepy, a Florida puppeteer was arrested for talking explicitly online to another man about wanting to kidnap, rape, kill and eat small children. What in the world? What’s even scarier is that parents said that he used to host pizza parties at his house and all the neighborhood kids would wait for him to get home. Here’s a big hint for all of you moms and dads out there: if a guy is hosting parties for kids and he doesn’t have any of his own, err on the side of caution and keep your kids at home. I will never, for the life of me, understand people who just let their kids go hang out with strangers.

3. I’ve been trying to avoid the whole Jackson family drama since, well, forever, but this week when Momma Kate went missing, even I became concerned. You know, these kids are in for a world of hurt. Their father went too a lot of extremes to keep them out of the public eye, now it seems as if that entire family is doing everything to keep them front and center, even if it means destroying them… Isn’t it enough that they saw what their childhoods did to Michael, do they really have to inflict the same insanity on the next generation of Jacksons?

4. A hotel in England is replacing copies of the bible with copies of Fifty Shades of Grey. Blank stare.

What had you scratching your head this week?

Giving Thanks for the Small Things {This or That Thursday}

by Daenel

Shopping Cart and Sunlight

Sometimes I get so caught up in the big picture that I miss the little things. For example, I took this picture using Instagram because I thought the light coming off the setting sun was just beautiful. In fact, I was so awestruck by the evening sky that I didn’t even notice the lone shopping cart until after I had posted the picture. And it made me think, how many times have I been so involved in the “big” things of life that I forget to give thanks for the “little” things?

Life has no guarantees, in fact, Psalm 103:15~16 says: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.” {NIV} There are so many people who woke up in happiness and are going to bed in sorrow because they’ve lost someone due to accident, tragedy or illness. Either way that person is gone and the time to say “I love you” will never be again.

If you read 1 Thessalonians 5:16~18, we are told to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” {NIV}

Right now I need to give thanks to God for the “small” moments in life:

  • the sound of my children’s laughter as they tease each other
  • the hubs’ contented smile as he sits in his favorite chair and reads a book
  • mom and dad who offer emotional and spiritual support
  • my brothers and sisters, by blood and by choice, who make me laugh
  • my church family who push me out of my comfort zone on a weekly basis
  • our dog who greets me each and every day as if he hasn’t seen me in years
  • the blessings that are too numerous to count

Downstairs, there’s a sign on my wall that says “It’s the small moments that make our lives big.”

What do you take for granted? Are there little things that you miss because you’re grabbing at the big stuff?

Fifteen {What I Wore Wednesday}

Are You a Shoe Girl?

Please Join Me on Saturday for Shoe Style Saturday!

Shoe Style Saturday is just fun way to share pictures of your shoes. Find more information by clicking here. If you plan to link up, leave a comment below and let me know so I can check it out.

What I Wore Thursday

So I’ve been on the job for almost two weeks now and I can honestly say I have nothing to wear. My library is a pretty casual environment and my clothes swing in polar directions, they’re either too dressy or too casual. The hubs nearly had a stroke because I wore my “It’s All About the Shoes” tee shirt to work last FridayIn my defense, the tee referenced The Wizard of Oz, so it did kinda sorta have a tie in to my work as a librarianAccept that I’m working in an academic library with a bunch of grown ups. So I’ve been trying to pin some possible outfits on Pinterest and I plan to build my wardrobe accordingly. You can check out my outfit board here.

What I Wore Thursday

It’s been in the triple digits off and on for the past few weeks and the humidity has been over the top. Almost like walking into a steam room that spews hot lotion instead of steam. Absolutely disgusting. But the library borders on freezing. Do you see the problem? See the little flowers? I made those. I like dressing up my cardis with crocheted flowers, it sorta customizes them.

What I Wore Thursday

I’ve been wearing a lot of cardigans because they’re easy to slip on and off as needed but it makes me feel like such a librarian. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

What I Wore THursday

I’ve also been wearing a lot of bright colors. There’s really no rhyme or reason for it, accept that it’s summer and I feel like I should be bright and cheery. I do like the lime green with the purple and brown. It’s kinda fun, ya know?

So what did you wear this week?

August Photo A Day {Photography}

by Daenel

So did you catch all of my photos for the month of July? No? That’s because I think I took a total of four. Four in 31 days! What the heck, yo? I have a perfectly good camera that has been collecting the proverbial dust because I, hmmm, I don’t have a valid excuse. But since I got called out on Instagram by my friend Mylynka at Finding Fitness in My Forties (notice her name showing up a lot lately?), I guess I’m gonna have to succeed this month.

So here it is, Fat Mum Slim’s prompts for August’s Photo A Day Challenge:

Would you like to participate? Here are the rules:

  • Starting 1 August take a picture using the inspiration from the prompt.

Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #6 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

So it seems I’ve reached the dreaded plateau. My weight seems to have gotten stuck between 156 lbs and 158 lbs. I guess I should be happy that I’m not gaining, but I thought for sure I would’ve broken that 155 lb barrier by now.I’m more than a bit disappointed to say the least.

I think I’m going to have to look at my calorie intake and see if I need to add more calories. I’m currently holding steady between 1200 and 13oo calories and I know that too little calories can cause your body to retain weight instead of losing it. I may need to bump it up by about 500 calories. What do you think? Any ideas?

#Cinchspiration Weigh In

I also plan to go back to Meatless Mondays, I think this will help diversify my diet and get more fruits and veggies into the family. My friend, Mylynka, sent me a cookbook to help me out. She also wanted to save my life. I made the mistake of observing Meatless Monday on one of the high holy days of grilling and things did not end well.

With that in mind, this week, my goals are to:

  • monitor my calorie intake & adjust as needed
  • diversify my workouts
  • increase my strength training
  • drink more water
  • eat more fruits and vegetables

Black Bow Flats {Shoe Style Saturday}

by Daenel

Bow Flats

Black Bow Flats: Kmart

Yesterday ended my first week at the library. While some things are still pretty new, in many ways it feels like I’ve always been there. Don’t you just love when you ease into a new place and instantly feel comfortable? Most of this week was spent with housekeeping ~ enrolling in benefits, getting my email set up, cleaning up my office, etc. Next week, I hope to actually get into the business of running my department ~ getting some training, finding out exactly what everyone in my department does, etc.

Oh, you don’t know what I do? Well, my title is “Library Associate” but what I do is supervise the periodicals, circulation and interlibrary loan departments (also known as Access Services). In other words, I make sure that students, faculty and staff have their information seeking needs met through a variety of formats (electronic, paper, etc) and if there is a barrier, I remove it. Kinda makes me sound like a ninja librarian, huh?

Piano in the Kent LibraryBut it’s not all work and no play, how about there’s a piano on my floor of the library? Apparently, during the semester, students, faculty and staff are allowed to reserve time for piano playing and they totally rock out. I’ve been told that there’ve even been a couple of impromptu jam sessions. I cannot wait. But you know what the best part is? The piano is right next to the Kent Coffee Café!

Where did your shoes take you this week?

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. I don’t know about you but when Apple introduced Siri, I was totally jealous. I also had the same flood of envy when Instagram photos started popping up all over Twitter. But now Android user an have their own talking assistant on their phones too. Thanks to my friend, Cathy, at Minister of Style, I found out about Assistant for Android and I’ve been all over it. All you have to do is click here, download and start talking. You can customize the avatar as well as the vocals. So. Much. Fun.

2. Did you see George Zimmerman’s interview with Sean Hannity on Fox? Honestly, his lawyer’s need to muzzle him because he’s a walking contradiction wrapped in lies with an inflated sense of self. When asked if he’d do anything differently that night, he actually replied no, then he corrected himself and said he wishes that he hadn’t been put in the position where he had to protect himself. Seriously? Dude, had you listened to the dispatcher and not followed Trayvon, you wouldn’t have murdered a teenager. Zimmerman also said it was that what happened that day was “God’s will”. Ummm, Mr. Zimmerman, my God had nothing to do with you playing rent~a~cop.

3. Apparently, the Hoff is still popular. Thieves are stealing giant David Hasselhoff cutouts from convenience stores. Really, people?

{Guest Post from Miss 15} Summer School via Television and Other Things I’m Glad I’ll Learn Before I’m EighteenI

by Daenel

HI!!!

I’ve been out of school for the last three months and  for some reason, it almost feels like I’ve never left…I mean aside from sleeping in, not riding the bus, and not seeing my school friends every day. I feel like I’m still in school because I’ve been learning things that ordinarily you would learn in school. Most of this is because I’ve been watching nothing but Nick Jr.

I admit it! I’m fifteen (gonna be sixteen in January~SQUEE!) and I still watch Nick Jr. Now before you tell your children to make fun of me, here’s why: These shows are actually a lot more entertaining than I thought they were back when I was five. And not only are they entertaining but the songs are fun to sing and you do actually learn some life lessons that may help you later in life no matter how old you are. Here are some of the things I’ve learned.

From SignTime: I learned three songs in sign language. Now I can sign to people who’s in my family, I can sign how I’m feeling, and I can sign all the activities I can perform outside (i.e. Running, jumping, swimming, marching, etc.)

From Dora The Explorer: I learned that taking things from people is wrong and that saying “Swiper, no swiping!” does get people to leave your belongings alone. I said this to one of the kids at church because he tried to take a doll from another child. His response, “Aw man! May I play with that doll please?”

From Go Diego! Go!: I learned about animals I didn’t even know existed and that all animals have special skills. I also learned about all the things I can do to help the earth and all the animals. We all share the earth so we should all take care of it together! Todos juntos!

From Yo Gabba Gabba!: I learned that I should eat healthy foods too because just like junk foods, “carrots want to go to the party! The party in my tummy! So yummy! So yummy!”

From Team UmiZoomi: I can finally do fractions!

From Ni Hao Kai-Lan: I owe everything to this show. I can now carry on a full conversation with someone in Mandarin Chinese, I can count to 199 in Mandarin Chinese and I can solve just about any emotional problem with a song. Seriously, this show has a song for everything!

From Toot and Puddle: I’ve learned about different areas in the world which, again, did not know they even existed and this,

“Your friends may travel far away
But they won’t be gone for long
A boomerang flies, but always returns
Home where it belongs!

Fly my friend, fly my friend
And while you’re away
I’ll be thinkin’ about you
Each and every day
How we laugh and play
In the winds that blow

Boomerang boomerang, fly little boomerang
Boomerang boomerang, as you roam
Boomerang boomerang, fly away boomerang
Boomerang boomerang, then come home!”

I encourage everyone to take a little time out of their day and watch Nick Jr. These shows are amazing. Make your kids watch too!

And now, here’s a list of ten things I’m glad I’ll learn before I’m 18:

  1. How to drive
  2. How to cook a full meal
  3. How to set a table correctly for a fancy dinner
  4. How to balance and keep track of a checkbook
  5. How to drive
  6. How to play guitar
  7. How to teach a class of children under the age of twelve
  8. How to swim underwater without holding my nose
  9. How to take care of a baby
  10. How to drive

Find a way to enjoy learning now because when your teacher said you never, ever stop learning…bro, they were serious.

Knowledge is POWER!

Mis15!

Fourteen {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

This has been such a great week. On Monday, I started my job as a librarian at Kent Library. So very exciting. I have my own office, which I’m in the process of making all pretty e’erything. The people are really nice and warm. I know this for a fact because I totally checked them out before my interview… The hubs and I went on a recon mission and talked to some of the staff before my interview because I needed to see if I’d be comfortable and happy. Seven hours can be incredibly long when you’re working with a bunch of cranky people, ya know? So that’s a little tip, the interview goes both ways. You’re interviewing your prospective employer just as much as they’re interviewing you.

Now to the important stuff, what did I wear? Well, you know me, it’s all about the shoes… So my outfits centered around my feet.

What I Wore Wednesday

What I Wore Wednesday
I absolutely adore this olive green top. It’s so lose and flowy. No sucking in… And the lace trim is all girly and feminine, just makes me feel pretty.

What I Wore Wednesday

The jeans are my absolute favorite finds. They’re from Sophia Vergara’s line at Kmart and I’ve been living in them. I bought them on sale for $11, crazy, huh? I like the high waist and the vintage wash. The wide flares beg to be worn with my chunky 70s style clogs. Love.

What I Wore Tuesday

What I Wore Tuesday

I can’t remember where I bought that necklace but it’s such a fun piece, no? I love the mixed metals and the organic shapes. And it jingles when I walk. It’s the little things, people.

What I Wore Tuesday

And what could be more fun than red nails and bangles? I usually don’t wear bracelets to work, as much as I like the look, they can be annoying when I’m trying to write. But, man, I’m really starting to dig that full on arm candy look. Maybe some day…

What I Wore Tuesday

Playing Suzy Homemaker with my apron by Flirty Aprons. It’s so nice to be able to wear my apron over something other than sweats.

So what did you wear this week?

First Day Jitters Instagram Style {In the Library}

by Daenel

Today was my first day at my new job. I was so incredibly nervous. The day began with me standing in front of my closet desperately trying to figure out what to wear…

What to Wear? Shoes.
I ended up going with a pair of black flats with a bow on the toe. I wasn’t sure how much walking I’d be doing and the campus has a lot of hills. I was happy with my choice, I totally ended up doing a lot of walking. In the hot Missouri sun. I would’ve been miserable if my feet had hurt too.

Kent Library
I work as a librarian at the Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University. It feels so good to be back at work. I’m responsible for three departments as well as the hiring and training of student workers. I would show you a picture of my office but I want to wait until it’s all prettified. I spent today cleaning and washing down (germaphobe that I am, I gave myself a headache with all of the disinfectant that I used).

Ink Pen
This is the one item that I kept from my predecessor. An ink pen. It’s just so freakin’ cool that I couldn’t get rid of it. Of course, it hurts to use but it’s shiny. And I do like shiny.

By the end of the day, I’d created a list of things I need for my office:

  • Coffee Maker
  • Coffee Mug
  • Family Picture
  • Pilot Precise V~5 Pens
  • Plant

What would you add to the list? Talk to me on Instagram by clicking here or leave a comment below.

Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #5 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

Wow! I cannot believe it’s been a month already! Gosh, the time has just flown by so quickly. That means that it’s time for me to do the whole full picture and measurement thing. Big heavy sigh. Honestly, it’s not that bad. It’s just that it’s still a little unnerving to put everything out there for everyone to see.

Cinchspiration 1 Month PicturesSo, there I am, in all of my glory. I don’t think the difference is as visible as it is tangible. I seriously feel lighter. My jeans don’t feel as snug around the waist (in fact, I’ve had to start wearing a belt). I would like to see more definition in my waist and I need to work on toning my arms but that will only happen if I actually stick to a workout plan.

I read somewhere that it takes 4 weeks for the individual to see the changes, 8 weeks for family and 12 for the world. So I guess I really need to make these next 4 weeks count, huh?

With that in mind, this week, my goals are to:

  • diversify my dinner menu
  • maintain a regular eating schedule
  • track my food intake (that is very important)
  • increase my strength training
  • drink more water
  • eat more fruits and vegetables

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. I love coffee. No, you don’t understand, I. Really. Love. Coffee. But there are times when drinking coffee is inappropriate, the biggest being during a funeral. Apparently, Robinson Funeral Home in South Carolina doesn’t agree. They’re attaching a Starbucks to the funeral home. This is just so weird.

2. So the guy who brings us Dance Moms is in the process of creating a new reality show about wait for it…

Extended breastfeedingBlank stare. Don’t get me wrong, I applaud women who breastfeed. I breastfed all four of my children. But do we really need to see a TV show about women who breastfeed their preschoolers? Didn’t we get enough, ummm, titillation from the Time cover a few weeks back? What will be gained from this? An educational program this won’t be. Exploitation of the families and furthering misperceptions about breastfeeding? Possibly.

3. The Penn State report was released, is anyone surprised that the powers that be covered up Sandusky’s raping of little boys to protect the University’s reputation? Seriously, when did the welfare of children start taking a back seat to a football game? I hope others who find themselves in a position to get a child out of danger see this as a cautionary tale and do the right thing ~ don’t just tell but follow up and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

Thirteen {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope you’re having a fabulous week. I am… We have so many things going on, I cannot wait to share but for now I have to keep my mouth shut. Don’t you just hate vague statements like that? Well, something I can share is that I’m down 4.4 lbs now and I’m totally excited. You can read all about my weight loss journey by clicking here.

So on to this week’s fashions:

What I Wore Friday

What I Wore Friday

I wore this just to run errands and hang out with the hubs. The hubs actually wolf whistled at me… Can I tell you how good that felt? I’ve never been overly comfortable with showing off my arms, but it’s so darned hot Three Digit Heat that I’ve been living in tanks. And it doesn’t hurt that I’ve started doing a 10 Minute Tank Top Arm Workout from Fit Sugar. It burns, y’all, it burns. And the ladies at my church have been working out too, so I’m definitely feeling the extra oomph that I’m getting. Can you say confidence?

What I Wore Sunday

What I Wore Sunday

On Sunday I continued the trend of stepping out of my comfort zone and wore a black and white polka dot skirt with red peep toe slingbacks. I felt so retro. Not hippie retro but pin~up retro. Don’t know if that’s an appropriate church feeling but it was there. Just super glam.

Eye Shadow I’ve Been Wearing

Soul Sister Eye Shadow by Bare Minerals

I’ve been living in this eye shadow most of the summer. It’s called “Soul Sister” and it’s by Bare Minerals. Seriously, don’t you just love that name? Anyway, I know it looks dark but it really is a medium purple shade with just a hint of sparkle. I’ve used as both eye shadow and eye liner. It’s simply fabulous. Purple is also my favorite color.

So what did you wear this week?

Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #4 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

Meal BarHi everyone! I hope you had a great week, I know I did. Our furniture finally arrived, so my workout space is gone but you know the old saying, when one door closes, another opens… The ladies at our church have gotten together and formed Rock Fitness, a combination of aerobics, flexibility training, water aerobics and cardio, to help us all get in shape. So three times a week for about an hour, a group of us (including my 15~year~old daughter) get together and sweat it out. Lemme tell ya, there’s nothing like sweating and laughing with a bunch of friends. So glad our church cares about the physical as well as the spiritual, if you’re ever in Jackson, Missouri, be sure to swing by The Rock International Ministries and say “hello”.

For the past two weeks, my calorie goal was roughly 1200 and I’ll admit, I had a hard time meeting that (those shakes are just so darned filling) but I knew that I had to maintain to keep my body from going into starvation mode. I’ve been trying to eat more veggies and drink more water but I’m not quite hitting my goals. This week I will do better.

I also need to vary my diet a bit. Being that my only “real” meal is dinner, I’m getting kinda tired of baked chicken and, frankly, I think my family is planning a revolt. Or, at least, that’s what it sounded like from the mumblings I’ve been hearing through the vents. So I really need to do something different as far as that’s concerned.

Weigh-In #Cinchspiration

Beginning Weight: 161.8 lbs

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. My tolerance level for pedophiles has reached an all~time low. Not that I had much patience for them before. But, let me tell you, the story of Adam Lee Brown, an HIV~positive sex offender who attempted to assault and then stabbed a 10~year~old boy in a public bathroom, has me feeling all kinds of frustrated and angry. There is just so much wrong with this story: why was he out on parole after being convicted of trying to infect children with HIV nearly 20 years ago by rape? Why wasn’t he rotting under the jail? Seriously, when you hurt a child there should be no second chances.

2. So, hindsight being 20/20, everyone’s realizing that the TomKat split wasn’t such a big surprise after all. Apparently, peeps are checking out Katie’s interview in Elle, dissecting and parsing every word and sigh to determine that she’d planned to leave all along. I’m just happy the tranquilizers (or whatever caused that doe~in~the~headlights look) have worn off and I wish only the best for her and Suri. Still love that name.

What had you scratching your head this week?

How to Create a Succulent Garden {This or That Thursday}

by Daenel

If you read my post on Tuesday, you’ll know that I’ve been dying to either buy or create my own succulent garden for awhile now but failed in my first attempt. Lesson learned from that little episode? Be prepared.

There are many reasons why I like succulent gardens:

  • Low maintenance
  • No allergy concerns
  • Kinda funky and unexpected

Succulent gardens can be purchased just about anywhere, but when you’re looking for something unique, it’s more fun to create yourself.

So here’s what you’ll need to create your own succulent garden:

THE SUPPLIES

Succulent Garden Supplies

  • Cactus Soil
  • Soil Cover aka Rocks
  • Choice of Succulents
  • Planter

THE SUCCULENTS

When picking your succulents, you want to make sure that they all have the same or similar sunlight, feeding and watering requirements. You also want to pay attention to things like texture, shape and color. The best composites are usually odd numbers with one tall, one “fluffy” and one “spreader”. Look at your arrangement close together to make sure you like the composition. Look at it from all angles.

THE STEPS

1. Empty Planter

Empty Planter

If you are particularly handy, you can add drainage holes. The coffee cup and saucer are bonded together so I didn’t bother with adding any. Also did you notice the dirt in the bottom of the planter? That’s from me placing the plants to see how I’d like them arranged in the pot. I recommend you do this so that you have a rough idea of what your finished product will look like (you can also gauge how much soil you’ll need by prearranging).

2. Add Rocks

Planter with Rocks

To make up for not having drainage holes, add a layer of rocks to the bottom of the planter. A single layer will suffice.

3. Add Soil

Planter with Soil

Add a layer of soil. You kind of have to eyeball it to see how much you need to put in but remember your succulents’ roots are packed in soil so you want to make sure that you leave room for them but you also need a barrier between the roots and the rocks.

4. Add Water

Planter with Water

Dampen the soil. You don’t want it soaking wet but you do need it damp.

5. Add Succulents

Add more soil until your plants are securely situated in the planter. You don’t want the soil to touch the leaves (that can cause them to rot). Adding a layer of rocks over the soil not only helps to retain moisture but it keeps the leaves and soil from touching.

6. Admire

To care for your succulent garden:

  • Keep in high sunlight areas
  • Water when top soil is dry (roughly every 2 weeks or so)
  • If you keep your succulent garden outside, bring it inside when the weather starts to turn
