Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. First of all, if you live in the Southeast Missouri area take a minute and look at our dog, Squeekerz, he’s been missing since last week. You can view his picture here. If you’ve seen him, please contact me at outsidethestacks@live.com. Thank you so much!

2. Clint Eastwood was the mystery speaker at the Republican National Convention. sigh I love his movies. He plays the cantankerous guy with a heart of gold really well but seeing him last night was, well, kinda sad. I want him to always be Dirty Harry. I want him to always be that grizzled man’s man who makes women swoon. I don’t want him to be old.

3. So, uh, Snooki’s a mom now. I have no words. Actually, I do. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that she’s going to be a good mom and she’s going to give her son the love and discipline he needs.

What had you scratching your head this week?

Squeekerz {Missing Dog Alert}

by Daenel

Squeekerz

This has been a very difficult week for my family and me. Last Friday morning, our beloved dog of 10 years, Squeekerz, decided to go for a walk without his leash or his humans. Those of you who are long time readers know that Squeekerz has become quite a fixture in my photography. He’s a first class photo bomber! And often likes to pose for pictures (this after spending many months getting over his fear of the camera sounds).

SqueekerzI’ve never been a big proponent of pet chipping, honestly, the thought of putting something inside my dog sort made me feel all Big Brotherish… But after this past week, I would tell anyone, if you love your pet, chip it. Make sure that your dog is licensed. Keep current photos. And never ever take it for granted that your dog will not run off.

Squeekers is a short haired Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix. His eyes range from dark brown to light brown almost hazel depending on his mood. He’s partial to bread and Girl Scout Cookies (short bread, thankyouverymuch). He was lost in Jackson, Missouri near HWY W around 7:30 AM. on Friday, 24 August. If you see him, please contact me at outsidethestacks@live.com. He’s missed terribly by his family.

SOAP: We Were Created in His Image {#B90Days}

by Daenel

The SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

OBSERVATION

Throughout the whole story of creation, God speaks things into existence, he says “Let there be light” and there is light (Genesis 1:14) and he tells the land to produce living creatures according to its kind (Genesis 1:24) but when it comes to man, he takes the time to form man out of the dust of the earth. But he doesn’t just throw together stuff to make man, he said “Let us make man after our own image” (Genesis 1:26), which means that we are walking, talking, flesh and bone representations of God.

APPLICATION

Have you ever looked in the mirror and not liked what you see? Your hair’s too curly or your nose is too flat or your thighs have more jiggle than you want… You pick yourself a part, finding flaws at every turn… Have you ever stopped to think that you are dishonoring God when you tear yourself down?

He says that we were made in his image, Psalm 139:14 (NIV) says “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” If you believe even one portion of the Bible to be true, then you have to believe that you are wonderfully and fearfully made, so stop tearing yourself down.

When you feel yourself thinking negative thoughts, look at yourself in the mirror and know that you were created by the hand of God, in his image!

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for creating me in your image. Thank you for the things about me that are unique, because these are the things that make me beautiful. And, Lord, as I go through my day and self doubt starts to creep in, help me to remember that I am your creation, beautifully, wonderfully and fearfully made. Amen.

WHAT IS BIBLE IN 90 DAYS?

Bible in 90 Days or #B90Days is a Bible reading plan hosted by Amy at Mom’s Toolbox. It provides an opportunity for a community of women to support each other as they read through the Bible in 90 days.

This session of #B90Days runs from 20 August thru 17 November and as a mentor (Group 34, holla) , my job will be to encourage readers through prayer, words of support on Twitter and via our accountability group. I’ll also be posting words of encouragement here on my blog, so stay tuned for those.

There’ll be weekly Twitter parties, using the hashtag #B90Days, so make sure you follow @MomsToolbox. You can also follow along and keep up with the daily reading plans by liking Mom’s Toolbox on Facebook.

WHAT IS SOAP?

Although this is a Bible reading plan and not a Bible study per se, Amy does recommend that participants use SOAP for guidance through the 90 day reading session as it helps with the understanding and application of the scriptures to our daily lives.

SOAP is an acrostic that stands for:

Scripture
Observation
Application
Prayer

For more information about SOAP, read Amy’s post What is SOAP?

The Bible in 90 Days: My Tips {#B90Days}

by Daenel

#B90Days Read with MeDeep breath in, deep breath out. Tomorrow begins the next session of the Bible in 90 Days and I’m more than ready for it. I pray that those of you who are reading along with us (whether you are in Group 34 or not) are ready. This isn’t going to be easy… Things that have never challenged you before will fight with you for your time and energy. But if you push your way through, I guarantee you will find your blessing on the other side.

I’d like to offer a few tips that helped me through the process the first and second times:

  • #B90Days Leadership Team 2012Pray before you start ~ pray for clarity, peace and understanding
  • Be consistent ~ find a time that works for you and stick to it
  • Don’t study while you’re supposed to be reading ~ if you find that you have questions, make a note or highlight then go back and study later
  • Pray when you finish ~ pray that His word will stay in your heart, mind and soul

There are a few guidelines for participating in the Bible in 90 Days program with Mom’s Toolbox:

  1. You must read the Bible ~ it can be the actual Bible or an electronic version, just as long as you are reading it (listening to the Bible doesn’t count)
  2. You must check in ~ if you fail to check in two times in a row, you will be removed from the group and another will be put in your place

Embroidered Slippers {Shoe Style Saturday}

by Daenel

Broken Slippers {Shoe Style Saturday}

Look at my beautiful slippers. I stared at them, hoping I could save them but I think it’s safe to say they can’t be helped… I hated to toss them because they were so beautiful ~ the embroidery, the bead work, etc. I wish I were crafty and could have thought of a way to repurpose them. Have you ever repurposed shoes? Or do you simply toss them when they are no longer functional?

Where did your shoes take you this week?

Shoe Style Saturday {Living Outside the Stacks}To participate in Shoe Style Saturday, all you have to do is:

  • take a picture of your shoes
  • post them to your blog, flickr or tumblr
  • if you post to Twitter or Instagram, use the hashtag #ShoeStyleSat
  • leave a comment below letting me know you’re linking up
  • visit other participants and leave some comment love

So, come on and show me your femme fatale flats, those sexy stilettos and pin~up peep toes, yes, even your racy runners.

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. Did you watch “The Week the Women Left” on LifeTime the other night? I’m not sure what I think of this show yet. I’m hoping that it does more than play into the stereotype that men are big lumbering apes who happen to fall on the women folk, get ‘em pregnant and then have no clue how to handle things from there on out. But I’m not holding out much hope as every other “reality” show seems to draw on exploitation, ignorance and weird accents. Honey Boo Boo, I’m looking at you, doll.

2. Chad, Chad, Chad, you’d think at your age that you’d know not to ever put your hands on a woman. I am so glad that the Miami Dolphins cut Chad Johnson after he was arrested for domestic abuse. It’s about dern time that the sporting world started taking violence against women seriously. But you know what really shocked me? VH1 also kicked ol’ Chad to the curve. I’m happy to see they’re also taking a stand against this butt headery. And this after I said reality shows prefer to profit from buffoonery, let’s just hope this may be a shift towards quality television.

3. The stupidity of teens knows no bounds. Did you see this story about a teenage girl who fell out an emergency window of the “party bus” she was riding  in with her friends and none of them called the cops out of fear they’d get busted for underaged drinking? blank stare Motorists called to report a body on the side of the road. The girl who fell tweeted her fall. Her friends continued riding for 20 more minutes before alerting the bus driver to incident. Hey, kids, if your friend falls off a bus onto a busy highway, fear of getting arrested should always take a back seat to the safety of your friend. Why does that even need to be said?

What had you scratching your head this week?

Instagram Love {This or That Thursday}

by Daenel

I’m one of those people who begged and pleaded for Instagram to come to Android. So when it finally became available, I downloaded it almost immediately and then proceeded to forget about it. I know, right? How much sense does that make?

I’m not exactly how long I went without using it but one day, I was playing around with my cell phone camera and I decided to try Instagram. Oh. My. Gosh. What had I been waiting for? I was absolutely smitten. And from that moment on, I’ve had to stop myself from snapping every moment of my life. It really is quite addicting.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the past 2 months:

@4daenelt {Instagram}

Notice something? There’s an inordinate amount of coffee in my stream. But that’s the fun part of Instagram, you get to see the small parts of  your friends’ lives and it’s the small moments that create the big things in life.

Are you on Instagram? I’m @4daenelt, give me a shout out and let’s share the small moments…

What I Wore Monday

Monday was such a muggy day. I wasn’t sure how to dress ~ leggings and sweater, jeans and tee, skirt with boots… Everything just seemed so wrong. You know how those days are… I ended up choosing a denim skirt with a billowy blouse, boots and a stack of bracelets. Probably not the most library friendly outfit but I looked cute, and, in the end, isn’t that really all that matters?

What I Wore Wednesday

Do you see that necklace? I had one like it many years ago and I gave it to my twin sister because she liked it, I never thought I’d find another one. Well, lo and behold, I found one at a little hippie store that closed a few months back.I think that’s called “Good Jewelry Karma”. I cannot tell you how happy that made me.

What I Wore Wednesday

That skirt is probably one of my favorite pieces of clothing. It was given to me by a friend. I’d been looking for a denim skirt forever. Not just any denim skirt, I wanted one with a slit in the front. I don’t know why but I love denim skirts with front slits. It’s a little big so it either falls real low on my hips or rides real high on my chest. At some point, I need to have it fixed until then, I’ll just keep wearing it with untucked tops.

What I Wore Wednesday

My adoration for front slit denim skirts is topped only by love for boots. And boots with a back zip? Stop with yourself. Aren’t these just too cute? I cannot wait to wear them with leggings and boot socks with a baggy sweater. Come on Fall!

So what did you wear this week?

Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #9 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

Whelp, I’m back on the workout bandwagon. It seems that what I really needed to do was focus and, um, workout. Go figure. I’ve also determined that I prefer working out in the evening to working out in the morning. It’s just too hard to crawl out of my cozy warm bed… And, yeah, I know if I want it bad enough I’ll deal. Not really, as long as evening workouts are an option, I’m good.

Two of my favorite workouts right now are from Fit Sugar. They’re both 10 minute routines, so I do them both and I walk about a mile every day with my co~workers. You can find my workout routines by going here. When we don’t walk, I get up and move around during the day. I also bought a new pedometer because I lost mine. I’ve stopped trying to get 10,000 steps a day, it was such a bummer whenever I missed the mark. So now I aim for 70,000 steps per week. So. Much. Less. Pressure.

#Cinchspiration Weigh In

Weight Change Since Last Week:  -1.4 lbs

Total Weight Lost: 5 lbs

Goal Weight: 135 lbs

ACCORDING TO THIS WEIGHT GUIDE, I’M 0.6 LBS AWAY FROM MY HEALTHY WEIGHT! THIS MAKES ME INCREDIBLY HAPPY!

The eating is going well. Or, at least, better than it was. All last week I was craving Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, so I indulged. I don’t know whether that hurt or help me. I stuck with the meal replacement shakes and/or bars for breakfast and dinner, so that wasn’t really an issue. I also started drinking more coffee than usual. I know, you’re asking how is that even possible? It is. I’ve started doing a 2:1 ratio with the water, for every cup of coffee, I drink two cups of water. That seems to be working out well for me.

My goals for this week are to:

  • keep up the evening workouts
  • eat more vegetables
  • get 70,000 steps by the end of the week

To watch my story unfold, stay tuned as I blog, Facebookvlog, tweet and pin my inches lost. You can follow the Team Cinchspiration conversation on Twitter using #Cinchspiration. I’m also on Instagram, you can follow me here.

Gold Gladiator Sandals {Shoe Style Saturday}

by Daenel

Gold Gladiator Sandals

Another week has come to an end. sigh This is our last week of short days at the library. During the summer we work from 8 AM to 4 PM and during the school year we work from 8 AM to 5 PM. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but that hour really does make a difference. But I’m thinking time should pass quickly, since the students are coming back on campus at the end of the week, the work load will pick up so here’s hoping, right?

ChairA few weeks ago, I was in the thrift store and I found this chair. Something about it called my name but I left it at the store, not really sure why. Well, no, that’s not true. I thought the hubs wouldn’t like it and I kinda need his help to get it in the truck. Anyway, I went back late last week and bought it. I’ve been trying to get back to the store to pick it up but my work hours and the store hours are completely opposite. I’m hoping I can get in there today. My plan is to reupholster it and maybe paint the frame, we’ll see. For the record, he doesn’t like the chair but he’s willing to reserve judgement. Besides, it only cost me $5.

CoffeeI finally set up a coffee station in my office. Best. Move. Ever. I’m surprised it took me as long as it did. Y’all know I needs my coffee. Don’t you just love the mug in the picture? It was a gift from a friend. I love being surrounded by my things in the office, it just makes it feel a little bit more like home. I’ll post pictures as soon as I finish setting things up. Yeah, I know it’s taking me a minute but I’m trying to hold off on removing things from the house until we move and we find out what won’t work in the new place.

RelaxingLast night the boy drove me in to town. It was his first time driving the truck in the evening. He did a pretty good job. I was able to kick my feet up and relax for a few minutes. This teaching the boy how to drive is a hard thing. Really, this was supposed to be the hubs job, I gave THE TALK, he’s supposed to do the driving. Hmmmm…. This is not working in my favor. Then again, maybe it is. I no longer have to run into the store to get things, I can just give him the money and send him in, call it payment for being allowed to drive my truck.

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. Honey Boo Boo. What in the world is this craziness on TLC? Have you seen that show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”? I didn’t realize what it was when I first turned it on, I honestly thought it was a new cartoon on one of the kiddie channels. Why in the world would parents subject their kids to that kind of madness? You know, everyone in the world is going to be dogging those kids out (and their parents). How is this helpful to the kids? I know the parents are probably making money off this but pimping out the babies and setting them up for ridicule? Yeah, not cool.

2. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry at this story about eleven people vying for $50,000 in a texting contest. TEXTING, y’all! $50,000. For. Texting. Seriously, I’m in the wrong business.

3. Have you heard about the death of Max Shacknai? He’s the 6~year~old son of Medicis Pharmaceuticals founder and CEO Jonah Shacknai. Anyway, a few months ago, he fell over the balcony at his father’s mansion and died a few days later. At the time of his injury, Max was in the care of his father’s girlfriend and her younger sister. He died four days after the accident, his death was ruled a suicide. Two days later, the girlfriend was found hanging naked from an outdoor balcony with her hands and feet bound. Her death was ruled a suicide. blank stare How many things can you find wrong with that story? Now that Max’s death has been ruled a possible homicide, maybe the “suicide” will be investigated as well.

4. Have you seen that commercial for Walmart where the ladies are having a clothes party and at the end they find out the clothes are from Walmart? I hate that commercial. It just seems so, I dunno, fake. “I’ve never bought children’s clothes from Walmart before.” Sorry, lady, you just don’t look like you only shop on 5th Avenue. Oh, and while I’m discussing commercials that I hate, that stupid Drano commercial with the lady and the two handy men ~ vile. I detest that commercial and I’ll be glad when it’s run it’s course.

What I Wore Sunday

I think this may be the most colorful outfit in my closet. I felt like walking summer! I started to wear an orange jacket with the skirt and a white tank but I thought that might be a bit too much, so I figured reversing the colors (white cardi and orange tank) would tone it down a bit…

What I Wore Wednesday

I totally need to invest in a remote! I’m exhausted from trying to run back into place before the timer goes off. Really, you should see me running across my front porch. I’m almost certain my neighbors think not only am I incredibly vain but a bit goofy too.

What I Wore Wednesday

I love that I got to wear my beaded bracelets… Although they weren’t matchy matchy, they did go with and I think they added enough color to make the outfit even more fun.

What I Wore Wednesday

And so as not to totally blind everyone, I wore neutral colored shoes…

What I Wore Tuesday

OK, maybe this is outfit is just as colorful as the one above. giggle But I do remember a while back saying that I wanted to branch out beyond my usual earth tones and neutrals.

What I Wore Wednesday

What I Wore Wednesday

Don’t you just love the ikat print on this blouse? I wasn’t sure what to pair it with but I thought the bright yellow cardi added a bit of fun. It can get kinda chilly in the library, ya know?

What I Wore Wednesday

I finally invested in a pair of flats for work. My feet are so happy now. And I’ve eliminated that annoying click click clickety click from walking down uncarpetted halls. I also bought a pair of red combat boots! I cannot wait to show them off.

So what did you wear this week?

Losing Weight and Getting Healthy #8 {#Cinchspiration}

by Daenel

#Cinchspiration Shake and Mixed BerriesSo, ummmmm, no scale picture today. But I will provide an update anyway. I’ve gained 1.4 lbs since last week but I’m not sweating it. Why, you may ask? Because I’ve lost 2 inches off my waist! Yes, 2 whole inches.  I am beyond thrilled.

Last week I bought a pair of jeans that were a little snug so that I wouldn’t have to wear a belt (a fashion thing, I hate wearing belts especially when they leave that lumpy buckle under my tees)… Anyway, I now need a belt to keep my pants up. It ain’t sexy when you have to do the pull up your pants wiggle every couple of steps… But it does make a girl feel good.

I do need to get back on the workout wagon. I haven’t been as steadfast as I should be but life has been crazy busy the past two weeks. Now that things have slowed down a bit, I hope to get back into the routine. I have been eating somewhat healthy but I know I could definitely do better.

In case you’re wondering, the picture above is my breakfast: a Cinch Shake (I think that one is chocolate) with a side of mixed berries. Sometimes I add the berries to the shake and sometimes I just pop the frozen berries into my mouth, totally depends on my mood. The shakes really are delicious and filling!

So that’s it, my wrap up for this week.

Blue Thong Sandals {Shoe Style Saturday}

by Daenel

Turquoise Thong Sandals

See those thongs? I picked them because the color just screamed”Take me home, we’ll have lots of fun together!” So I did. Big honkin’ mistake. I wore them to work and half way through the day I ended up putting on my walking shoes that keep under my desk for midday walks. My feet were killing me. I know those types of shoes have a break in period but ohmyword that was just painful. I’ve always lived by the mantra of “Fashion over function” but if your feet hurt, there’s nothing you can do to make the day better…

In other news, I’ve been doing really well with the August Photo A Day challenge. I know, it’s only the 4th day but I’ve been known to quit things 2 days in soooo…. I’m pretty happy with myself right now. If you’d like to see my interpretations, just go here.

And because I like a challenge, I’ve started a second 31 day photography challenge. 31 Days 31 Photos 31 Stories is being hosted by fellow #BLMGirls, Beatrice, at inspired by Beatrice Clay. It’s so much fun! You take a picture according to the prompt and then you tell a story about the picture in 6 words. Lemme tell ya, it gets the creative juices flowing! You can see my pictures here.

Things That Leave Me Scratchin’ My Head {Coffee Talk}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk1. Are you watching the Olympics? I’m not. I usually don’t but I see the updates on Facebook and Twitter, that’s enough for me. What made me stop what I was doing and take a look was all the mean comments directed towards Gaby Douglas and her hair. I was just thinking, sheesh, how bad is it that it’s overriding her Olympic wins? She. Wears. Her. Hair. In. A. Ponytail. A ponytail that is held back with clips and gel. Really, folks? She’s competing in gymnastics, not walking the catwalk. What the heck? And she’s 16! Gaby, if you’re reading this {‘cause who isn’t}, keep your head up and rock on, I’m proud of you. *fist bump*

2. This morning, Don Imus almost made me cry. Yes, I listen to Don Imus. No, there’s nothing wrong with me. Anyway, he was talking about the farm that he runs for kids who are dying from cancer and the tenderness with which he spoke, got to me and I had to check myself. It just made me wonder, how someone who can be such a total butt sometimes can be so caring…

3. Ya know, until I saw this article on the CNN website, I never thought about fashion and medical challenges…But how cool, brave and creative are these women? Really, I love how they had a medical need and they found a creative way to solve it. I remember when I had my thyroidectomy, I wore hand crocheted scarves to cover the big ol’ gruesome scar across my neck. As time passed, the scar faded but I kept wearing the scarves and I remember how pretty and fashionable I felt. I’m glad there are women out there who are fashionable and healthy.

Clouds {This Or That Thursday}

by Daenel

Last week, we had some crazy weather. It was soooo hot. I think we hit the triple digits or very close to it most of the week but Thursday just flipped the script. While I was at work, I happened to look out my window and noticed that the clouds looked a little, ummm, odd. So, I did what any normal person would do, I grabbed my Nikon and ran outside and started snapping away…

Clouds

I only took a couple of shots before it started raining so I quickly ran back inside…

But the cloud show started again almost as soon as I got home…

Clouds

Clouds

Clouds

I decided not to edit, accept for the addition of my watermark…

What’s the weather been like in your area?

What I Wore Wednesday

I was totally feeling funky on Wednesday so I busted out the leopard print blouse. Wearing it makes me feel all fun and everything… In fact, I wore this blouse for my interview with a black pants suit because I needed to not feel so formal.

I think next time I wear it, I should wear a red belt to help define my waist. What do you think? I also think red will make it a bit more memorable. Ooooh, I just thought about my red slingback pumps with the leopard print heel. I think that’s gonna be a big ol’ yes!

My Sofia Vergara jeans. Best $11 I ever spent. And those black wedges? You can’t really see them but I absolutely adore them. In fact, I like them so much that I have a tan pair just like ‘em. Do you do that, buy multiples of something because you like it?

A closer shot of the blouse. It’s a sheer sleeveless blouse, I usually wear a black cami under it… Just so cute.

Then only accessories I wore that day were my wedding set and a watch my mom gave me. She knows that I absolutely adore watches. When I was a kid, I used to save up my allowance so I could buy a new one each month.

And, a dark brown pedi…
