Training for My #5Kfor40 {In the Gym}

Training for #5Kfor40 {Living Outside the Stacks}

We had our “Official” 1 mile timed run yesterday.  This is the run that shows how much we have or have not improved over the course of the 8 week training session. I haven’t really set a time goal yet, I just wanted to start an exercise program and finish it. But if I have to set a goal, I would like to shave two minutes off my time. I think that’s doable.

Towards that goal, I already feel like I’m getting stronger. And my stamina has increased. I can run half a mile without stopping, which is a big step forward for me. My endurance goal is to run a full mile without stopping.

I’ve also started running with music. This is new for me but I read that running with music can help you increase your speed. The jury is still out on that one as far as I’m concerned, but we’ll see. Right now I’m using the Pop and Hip Hop Workout Station on Pandora but I’d rather listen to something a little more inspirational, which means I may be switching over to Spotify. Which makes me sad because I do big puffy heart Pandora.

Official Time: 12 minutes 28 seconds

Distance: 1 mile

Date: 29 April 2013

What’s on your playlist?

Feel free to follow my training here on my blog and cheer me on as I RUN the Capaha Classic 5K on 13 July. You can watch my progress on Instagram and Twitter.

    Awesome!!! Having a fit and healthy lifestyle is crucial to a long happy life. If we’re not healthy, how can we be happy?
    I got tired just reading this. I walk a lot, but I don’t usually run. Personally, I just like seeing my breakfast once….I’d prefer not to see it again.

      Exactly! Healthy means being happy.

      I cannot eat before running but by the time I’m done, I’m STARVING!

    Music increases my speed when I drive and when I exercise so you can rest your case. I really want to go into the habit of running, but the only time I’d be able to run is extremely early in the morning and I am NOT a morning person. So, I’m not sure how that’s going to work out. ):

    I do exercise with the equipment that I have which includes a treadmill. My favorite song to listen to is Eye of the Tiger. LOL!

      I was humming that song yesterday during the last part of the run. I almost threw my fists up in the air! LOL

      I heart my treadmill. I don’t think I would’ve even attempted this had I not started there first. But I know you’re gonna do your thang!

    I had listened to a playlist on Spotify comprised of 80s pop music (I found the rhythms and synthesizers to be motivating). But lately I will switch to 80s hip hop station (Pandora) as I now run the track with 20somethings who I aggressively keep up with, at times. Lol.

      I had to run with some 16-18 year olds yesterday *whew* a nice reminder that I am old. LOL Yeah, 80s seems to work best for me too. Maybe ’cause I know the words and can kinda keep my breathing in check by singing a long in my head.
