Ageless Style Linkup: Second Time Around

Nine ladies, forty and over, show you that style doesn’t have an age limit. A themed linkup takes place on the first Tuesday of every month.

This month’s theme is: Second Time Around. We’re exploring vintage and/or thrifted pieces. I’ve decided to highlight a thrifted piece that I customized to fit my personal style.

Are you a thrifter? Before I moved to Georgia, I used to go to the local thrift store once a week to buy skirts. I’d go there with $20 and walk out with anywhere between 5 and 8 skirts, depending upon availability and sales. I loved it. Many of the skirts still had the tags on them and some were so unique that I just couldn’t pass them up. And others just looked like there was opportunity for tweaking and personalization. This burgundy wool skirt fit into the last category.

By itself, the skirt is adorable. It’s a burgundy wool pencil skirt with interesting seaming. But the seaming looked like it was missing that extra oomph, so I stared at it for a bit and thought Hmmmm, those seams look like vines…. Then the idea hit me! I went digging through my stash of hand crocheted flowers and found three that I thought offered just the right amount of contrast and fun and pinned them to the skirt. Side note: I crochet flowers to pin to scarves and sweaters to customize the looks. Finding just the right buttons for the center became an obsession, so I had to dial it back a notch.

I can’t remember where I found the necklace but isn’t it cute? Even though it’s orange, I tend to treat it as a neutral when I wear it. Do you do that? Treat colors as neutrals?

  • Did you add the orange stitching on the vine seams? That stitching and your flowers take the skirt up a notch. I have felt flowers that I pin on my shawls and coats. In high school I wore a pin that read “Eat Worms Today”. Not sure what that was about but glad that phase has passed. Love the pic of you standing on the trunk. Very playful!

    • LOL at your pin. When we were kids, my sister and I used to sing a song called “Everybody Hates Me” and it had a line about eating worms.
I didn’t add the stitching, but the color did influence the flower pins. I used to crochet them all the time to add to cardigans and scarves just for a little twist.

What a fun skirt Daenel. The 3D knit flowers make it so gorgeous and unique. That necklace is just as fun and a perfect match for your skirt!

I’d love for you to stop by and linkup with me for Thursday Moda. Share your great style with my readers. =)
