Coffee Talk: Strawberry Chocolate Chip Pound Cake

Coffee Talk {living outside the stacks}

I’d like to welcome you to Coffee Talk. If you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stuff that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And, who knows, there may even be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun.

Strawberry Chocolate Chip Pound Cake {living outside the stacks}

True story: The Hubs likes box cakes. I’m not sure what the deal is but sometimes I’ll come home from work and there’ll be a box of cake mix and icing siting on the counter. Hint much? I’m not a big box cake fan. Sometimes it can taste a little, ummmm, generic. So I’ve started playing around with add~ins to customize the taste of the cakes. And, as long as the add~ins don’t include nuts or coconuts, The Hubs is OK with me experimenting.

This Strawberry Chocolate Chip Pound Cake is one of my experimental first cakes. The Hubs and the girls loved it. I mean, they ate the entire thing in one sitting.

  • 1 box Duncan Hines Strawberry Supreme Moist Deluxe Cake Mix {make sure you get the ingredients listed on the box}
  • 1 Cup Semi~sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Container Vanilla Frosting

For the cake

  1. Follow the directions on the box for the cake
  2. After mixing the ingredients add the cup of chocolate chips to the cake mix
  3. Bake according to package directions

For the frosting

  1. Put the frosting into a microwave safe container and microwave until soft {I used a measuring cup because it made it easy to drizzle the frosting on the cake}
  2. After the cake has cooled, drizzle the frosting on the cake and let cool again

Do you prefer store bought or box cake?

Happy Snacking,

    Sounds fabulous!
    I love your photos too – awesome!

  • Now that’s my kind of recipe! Anything too complicated never, ever, ever gets made around here!

    • It’s sooooo easy. And, really, you can kind of dump and stir with just about all of the flavors. I’m really having fun with this and it makes the baking, ummmm, interesting. LOL

    Well, there goes my diet!

    TY for this recipe. Can’t wait to try it! I used to make cakes from scratch but those days are pretty much over…there’s other things I’d rather be doing. Haha. As far as box cake vs. store bought, it really depends. There is a Festival Foods in our little town with a bakery section and I really like their white cake with whipped topping frosting, but the rest of their cakes I can leave alone. And the equivalent to this cake in other Festival Foods stores is not the same…go figure. I like box cakes when they have add-ins such as this one. I think add-ins really make the box cakes so much better, plus they’re quick and easy to make.

    • You’re welcome. Let me know how you like it. I’m not sure what it is with me and box cakes. I don’t mind making them from scratch {when I have time} but I don’t do it very often. The Hubs is hands down a boxed cake fan, but he’s warming up to the idea of add-ins. Let me know what you think of this cake…

  • AlwaysLaTonya

    This really sounds good. I never would have put those together before, but I going to have to try it!

    • LaTonya, my family loved it. I did too. 🙂
