Day 2: My Favorite Movies (Again, I Can’t Pick Just One)

I’m not a big movie person.  I blame it on my ability to become totally distracted by anything shiny.  Seriously, I have the attention span of a squirrel.  But that being said, there are a few movies that will make me stop whatever it is that I’m doing and become totally engrossed in the story.

In order by date (hey, I’m a librarian, I categorize things in my sleep):

  • Imitation of Life (1959) ~ I found out at my dad’s funeral that his favorite song was “Troubles of this World” sung by Mahalia Jackson who sings the song in the movie at the mother’s funeral.  My dad didn’t know this is my favorite movie and I didn’t know that song was his favorite ~ this movie will forever tie me to my dad.
  • Somewhere in Time (1980) ~  My sister and I often quote this movie at each other.  It’s the first romantic movie I’ve ever watched and it gave me unrealistic expectations of love (or at least no man has been willing to starve himself to death to be with me).
  • Mommie Dearest (1981) ~  “No more wire hangers!  Everrrrrr!”  How can you forget that line?  This movie is both horrific and funny at the same time.
  • Dirty Dancing (1987) ~ “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.”  Swoon.  I know all the words and, yes, I do get up and dance.  Every.  Single.  Time.
  • Legally Blonde (2001) ~ Honestly, I heart just about anything with Reese Witherspoon in it.  She’s just so freakin’ perky and talented.

Do you have a favorite movie that you know word for word?

  • Sandra

I actually said “no wire hangers” to my daughter, and meant it. So one or both of us will be in therapy soonish

    • LOL Sandra, I do not allow wire hangers in my house. My husband and I have wooden ones and the kids have plastic. Funny how a movie can totally impact your house wares choices.

  • Again, many in common sis. Hard to narrow down my top five or anything, but a few of my faves are:
Beaches, Steel Magnolias, Mommie Dearest, Dirty Dancing, Shawshank Redemption, The Five Heartbeats, Leaving Las Vegas, Love and Basketball, The Goonies

    • Oh man, Beaches is a good one as is Steel Magnolias. And the soundtrack to The Five Heartbeats ~ whew, can’t get me to stop sanging to that one. I have never seen Leaving Las Vegas but I know a lot of folks who love it. Love and Basketball is a good one too. And The Goonies ~ nostalgia.

My sister & I would sit and watch Mommie Dearest and comment on how Dunaway’s character reminded us of our mom. In fact, my sister would refer to our mom as “Mommie Dearest” and I’d be in the background cracking up.

Dirty Dancing was an enjoyable movie for myself as well.

My fave 5 (subject to change daily):
    1. Shawshank Redemption
    2. Grease
    3. Gloria
    4. The Notebook
    5. Love & Basketball

LOL My kids call me that because of the whole hanger thing ~ I only use wooden hangers.

Loved Shawshank Redemption, definitely a good choice.
      Grease is pretty cool too.
      I have never seen Gloria.
The Notebook is a good one.
Love & Basketball, yeah, you got me on that one.
