I don’t know about y’all but I grew up in one of those households where kids and parents had a “distant” relationship.  We knew that our parents loved us but we weren’t what you’d call “friends.”  There was respect and a healthy amount of fear(I think my mom had eyes in the back of her head, read here to find out why) but there was no friendship.  And I was ok with that.  Really, the last thing I wanted was to be my mom’s pal and I’m pretty certain that she felt the same way.

That being said, I used to go out of my way to drive my mother insane.  I have to describe my mother in order for you to get the full understanding of this statement and how truly funny and easy it was.  My mother is about 5’1″ and 102 lbs fully dressed and wearing a full length faux fur coat.  And she’s an evangelist.  That’s right, y’all, I’m a PK (Preacher’s Kid) times two (my stepdad is a preacher too).  For the record, we never refer to my stepdad as our stepdad, we call him “dad” but I’ve talked about my birth father on this blog before, so I’m just trying to differentiate.

Anyway, when I think about the things that I used to do get to my mom ~ shaving my head, telling her I was pregnant, asking why there was a cross burning in our yard, etc. ~ it’s a wonder that I’m still here.  My mother used to tell me all the time that she hoped that I’d have one just like me (the parental curse). I ended up with four:

  • Miss 17 wants a mohawk (I shaved my head once and showed my mom at church.  While she was preaching.  It did not go over well.)
  • Miss 15 has decided that she’s never leaving home (I couldn’t wait to get out on my own.  I started planning my escape as soon as I could walk.)
  • Mr. 15 is looking at cars (He doesn’t have a license and as far as I know he doesn’t have a job to pay for this car.)
  • Miss 13 believes she may be a penguin trapped in a human body (Ummmm….)

On a positive note, they all made the Honor Roll this semester, so they aren’t all bad…

What do your kids do to make you crazy?
