ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Terri {Meadow Tree Style}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

MY OUTFIT
Embroidered tops. I think I can officially say I’m obsessed. I feel like I have one for just about every challenge now…
So why did I choose this top? Because the the embroidery in the smock reminds me the book spines and the stripes in the bodice look like the writing in the book. Don’t you think? I imagine the rug is one of those beautiful Turkish ones, you know, with the fringe? So that’s why I chose the distressed denim shorts. And the brown sandals mimic the plate of cookies.
Terri asked us to share the last book that we read for today’s post. The last book that I read was Passing by Nella Larsen. Passing is the complex story of Clare Kendry, a light-skinned woman married to a racist white man who doesn’t know she’s African American, and her childhood friend, Irene Redfield, just as light-skinned. While Clare chose to “pass” as white, Irene chose to remain within the African American community, and is equally allured and repelled by Clare’s risky decision to cross-over personal and social status. During the course of the novel, Clare begins to long for portions of the African American culture that she had to abandon, this forces her relationship with Irene to become intoxicating and strained, leading to a tragic ending.
This story is both chilling and heartbreaking. It also highlights the precarious lives of African Americans who chose to pass led. In order to truly cross over to the “other side”, they had to cut off ties to everything and everyone that could give away their racial identity. They had to opt not to have children or pray their offspring didn’t give them away.
Nella Larsen was an African American novelist, nurse, and librarian. While she only wrote two novels, Passing and Quicksand and a few short stories, she is considered a leading voice in the Harlem Renaissance. Her novels deal with a variety of themes such as racial and sexual identity, and classicism.
