ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Gray}, Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfit. My main tip for participating is not to just look at the colors but look at the textures, think about complimentary colors, etc. In other words, you don’t have to be literal in your interpretation. It’s all about looking at the items in your closet in new and creative ways — mixing colors and patterns and just having fun.

This week’s inspiration piece was curated by me. Living Outside the Stacks is all about my life away from the library.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

Pocket, ca. 1784

Pocket, ca. 1784

I chose this pocket as our inspiration piece for two reasons:

  • the pretty flowers
  • POCKETS ARE LIFE

Did you know that back in the day, pockets weren’t part of women’s clothing, but were a totally separate accessory? And judging by the teeny tiny or nonexistent pockets that still we still find on some women’s clothing, I’m gonna say we may need to go back to making them as fashion accessories. Seriously, isn’t this one just beautiful? Anyway, you can read more about this particular pocket here. Can you believe this may have been created by an untrained embroiderer? Wow.

The colors in this pocket are so vibrant and happy.

What will you wear? I can’t wait to see.

MY LOOK

I wore this outfit to work on Thursday. During the summer, we work a 4 day schedule, so Thursdays are our Fridays, which means we can wear casual clothing. My level of casualness really depends upon what I have going on that day. I knew I’d be out taking pictures, so I needed something stretchy and flowy, so this was perfect.

I also tried a new hairstyle. I’m not in love with it. I’m trying to grow my hair out and I’m sick of my usual part on the side and go. I want something that requires very little manipulation, but looks kind of – I hate this word – sassy. I’ve given up dying my hair. I had blue black hair for about a week and it all washed out, so I’m guessing I’m just meant to wear my natural hair color and let those grays pop on through…

I’m also experimenting with lipstick colors. A few weeks ago, I wore red, this time it’s a brick with a pink overlay. I love love love layered lip colors. I also thought the lip color was a nice contrast to the heather colored earrings.

I can’t remember how long ago I bought this top, I just knew I had to have it because of the embroidery on the shoulder. Then it sat in my closet for years. And, to be honest, I’m still not completely happy with the way I wore it for this prompt, but I’ve accepted that not every outfit is gonna be a winner.

I think it’s the khaki jeggings that are throwing me off. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to khaki jeggings/pants and I still have a hard time styling them. Maybe the top would look better with a denim mini skirt? Not a super short mini, but a mini nevertheless? What do you think?
