Daenel T {living outside the stacks} Style Imitating Art Black Romper with Black Ankle Wrap Flats

Welcome to another week of Style Imitating Art, where we draw our style inspiration from works of art. Style Imitating Art {aka SIA} is hosted by Jen {Librarian for Life and Style}, Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, and me. Every other Monday, one of us curates an art piece to use as style inspiration for the following week {host outfits are posted on the following Monday, with participant outfits posted on Wednesday}.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

Madam X by John Singer Sargent {Image from The Met Public Access}

Madame X or Portrait of Madame X is the title of a portrait painting by John Singer Sargent of a young socialite named Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, wife of the French banker Pierre Gautreau. The painting created between 1883-1884, stands 7′ 8″ x 3′ 7″.

THE CURATOR

This week’s inspiration piece was curated by yours truly. Many years ago when I taught American history, I taught a section on culture and one of my favorite painters to talk about was John Singer Sargent. His paintings are so gritty and full of subtle colors. Madam X is a favorite of mine because of it’s subtle boldness – I hope that makes sense. When you first look at the painting, you see a mass of black, but there are all sorts of subtleties – browns, peaches, grays, etc. It’s a  neutral but powerful color palette.

What do you think you’ll wear? I can’t wait to see!

THE COHOSTS’ LOOKS

Jen {Librarian for Life and Style} #StyleImitatingArt

Jen {Librarian for Life and Style} is totally giving Madam X vibes in her black maxi dress with all of the bronzy gold accessories. Jen opted to add her white cardigan to make her maxi dress more work appropriate and to capture the “bare white shoulder look”. You can see the full details of Jen’s look by clicking here.

Salazar {14 Shades of Grey} #StyleImitatingArt

Salazar {14 Shades of Grey} opted to go “the casual route” with this week’s Style Imitating Art. Salazar added her brooch to mimic the jeweled strap of Madam X’s dress. Perfect. You can see the full details of Salazar’s look by clicking here.

MY LOOK

Daenel T {living outside the stacks} Style Imitating Art Black Romper with Black Ankle Wrap Flats

I’d initially planned to wear my black maxi dress for this post, but I was going through my closet when I saw a black top and was all Hmmmm, I don’t remember buying this black top. And, guess what? It was my black romper that’s been stowed in the back of my closet forever. Naturally, I had to wear it.

Like Madam X, I decided to go with minimal accessories, just a simple pair of gold hoop earrings. But I did pull out some of the reds in the portrait with my lipstick {which is a stunning matte that was picked out for me by my sister}.
