As the blogger and photographer behind Living Outside the Stacks, I independently select and write about stuff I love and things I think you’ll enjoy too. Living Outside the Stacks has affiliate and advertising partnerships so I get revenue from sharing this content and from your purchase. Thank you for your support.

Thank you for coming back to see all of the participants. There are so many exciting interpretations for this week’s inspiration piece!

ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Welcome to Style Imitating Art. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Terri {Meadow Tree Style}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

THE CURATOR

This week’s work of art was chosen by me.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

Girl in Rose and Gray. Miss Carmel White by Robert Henri

This portrait was painted in 1911 by Robert Henri. Robert Henri was an American painter and teacher. He was a leader in the Ashcan School of American Realism.

I chose this painting because this was one of my favorite artistic styles to study when I was in college. I like the realism and grittiness of the images… I also like the cockiness and subtle sexiness of the subjects.

SUBMISSIONS

Jodie {jodie’s touch of style}

Jodie wrote that she was initially looking for a picture of a dress that reminded of her the inspiration image but she couldn’t find it, so she opted for this outfit instead. Ummmm, I think it was meant to be. Look at those fabulous coated cotton pants {handmade by her mom!!}, don’t they look like faux leather? I think I have my inspiration look for the next time I wear mine.

Reni {reni’s odds and sods}

I don’t know if Reni could’ve nailed the color combo any better. Even the drapiness of the fabric is spot on. I’m also digging the necklace and the shoes {which are metallic and read very neutral to me, so they can be worn with anything}.

Shelbee {shelbee on the edge}

I don’t know how I missed Shelbee’s submission. She’s a regular participant and I should’ve noticed my post was “off.” I apologize, Shelbee.

Doesn’t she look like the spitting image of the inspiration painting? Just soft and dreamy but a bit mischievous, no?

Suzy {the grey brunette}

I don’t know what I big puffy heart more: Suzy’s chunky necklace, flirty tank, or that fun clutch. And those oh-so-cool white jeans are perfect.

MY COHOSTS

Salazar {14 shades of grey}

Salazar’s menswear inspired twist on the ultra feminine inspiration piece is, well, inspired. Waistcoats are such fun clothing pieces and, really, quite versatile. I’m also digging those shoes. Just spiffy.

Terri {meadowtree style}

When I first saw Terri’s outfit, I was drawn to that skirt. The shape is so unusual but fun. And the color looks like a soft mix of gray and blue. Everything about it makes me think of the inspiration piece.

MY OUTFIT

For my outfit, I drew inspiration from the background colors. You can see my full explanation for why this outfit works in this post. But I also think this outfit would’ve worked as well, what do you think?
