ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. And that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

THE CURATOR

This week’s image was chosen by me.

SUBMISSIONS

Leslie {once upon a time happily ever after}

I love love love Leslie’s scarf and are those black and white polka dots that I see? I’m so digging everything about Leslie’s outfit.

Jodie {Jodie’s Touch of Style}

Jodie called her outfit a “Cherry On Top.” And I totally agree. This outfit is both sweet and a little bit sassy. And, ummm, those boots? *heart eyes*

THE CO-HOSTS

Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}

salazar {14 shades of grey}

Salazar wrote that she “went simple with the black and white color scheme, but I also added my necklace for the touch of gold and coral on the bottle’s stopper and to mimic the designs on the bottle.”

That necklace is stunning. I think Salazar has the most beautiful jewelry collections.

Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}

Kim wrote that she: ” forgot I had this shirt and went to get it for something else, so decided to take some photos.  (Yes, I’m liking the orange wooden post in the foreground, the rust on the metal cover by me feet, and the orange “fencing” in the background-LOL!)”

I love how the corally reds are reflected not just in the natural surroundings, but Kim’s top as well. And, um, yes, in the soles of her boots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen white combat boots before – those are super cool

STYLING IDEAS

I chose this snuff box because I wanted to try something different. Whenever I pick inspiration pieces, I tend to either go for bold colors or neutral prints. But this black and white? Well, it seems simple at first glance, but there really are a lot of layers.

There are the colors: coral, gold, black, and white {you can even use the gray from the background as a color choice}. But there are also different textures. These textures can be reflected in fabrics such as silk or tweed. Now, think about prints. You can go with solids or houndstooth. There really are a lot of options.

My main tip for participating is not to just look at the colors but look at the textures, think about complimentary colors, etc. In other words, you don’t have to be literal in your interpretation. It’s all about looking at the items in your closet in new and creative ways — mixing colors and patterns and just having fun.
