ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Gray}, Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfit. My main tip for participating is not to just look at the colors but look at the textures, think about complimentary colors, etc. In other words, you don’t have to be literal in your interpretation. It’s all about looking at the items in your closet in new and creative ways — mixing colors and patterns and just having fun.

THE CURATOR

This week’s inspiration piece was curated by me. Living Outside the Stacks is all about life away from the library.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

James JH Gregory and Son Seed Catalogue

 GREGORY, JAMES J.H., & SONS. 1896. CATALOGUE OF HOME GROWN SEEDS no. 1896, 1897, 1898 (DAMAGED), 1899, 1900, MARBLEHEAD MA. {from The Smithsonian Libraries, no copyright}

I chose this image because I’m hoping all the rain we’ve had this weekend will bring some pretty blooms in the coming weeks. I also like the soft pastel colors in the image, which are so not me, but I’m willing to work outside of my sartorial comfort zone. I see shades of blue, pink, brown, and cream. As always, you don’t have to be literal with your interpretation – maybe try a contrasting color or a floral pattern. You can even wear a graphic tee. There really are a lot of options.

What do you think you’ll wear? I can’t wait to see.

THE CO-HOSTS

Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}

Salazar {14 shades of grey}

I absolutely adore Salazar’s take on the theme. Her plaid pants are perfect and that teal is such a pretty color. It’s funny, when I first saw the image, I read the color as blue, but now that I see Salazar’s and Kim’s outfits, I see teal.

I think I’ve said this before {if I haven’t, I’m saying it now} but I love love love mustard/gold on Kim. And with the floral top? All the yeses!

INSTAGRAM SUBMISSION

We also had an Instagram submission, click here to see Shugunna’s interpretation. And, remember, it’s not too late to join us for this challenge or for next week’s. Just keep reading for further instructions.
