Style Imitating Art {living outside the stacks}

Today is our convocation/professional development day at work. I have to give a 10 minute presentation on the library. I think my presentation is slightly more than 10 minutes. I hope that’s ok. I have a lot of information to present. Especially with our main campus relocating downtown. This is one of the few times during the semester that everyone from all eight campuses are together, so I’m trying to make sure my presentation is relevant to the most, while still speaking to the few. I’m also trying out an interactive poll, so pray for me. LOL

Yesterday, Pastor Hankins said we shouldn’t look at our jobs as just a job, but as an opportunity to let our lights shine. One thing he said that really hit home with me is that we may be the only light a person sees during the day. I always say that when I’m talking to the faculty and staff. I try to stress that we have to speak kindly to our students, cheer for them, and support them because we may be all the encouragement that they get. It was nice to have that reaffirmed at church {the scripture he used was: Matthew 5:13-14}.

So, anyway, I plan to let my light shine this week…

ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Gray}, Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfit. My main tip for participating is not to just look at the colors but look at the textures, think about complimentary colors, etc. In other words, you don’t have to be literal in your interpretation. It’s all about looking at the items in your closet in new and creative ways — mixing colors and patterns and just having fun.

THE CURATOR

This week’s image is curated by Salazar {14 Shades of Gray}. Salazar is “…a stagnating packet of crisps {context} trying to change by adding more colors to my wardrobe and my life.”

INSPIRATION ART WORK

The Star Catcher by Spanish artist Remedios Varo

Star Catcher by Remedios Varo

Salazar wrote that she “…actually used [this image] for my Story Generation class back in college, in which you have to pick an image, a song, or a poem and write a story inspired by it. I came across it again as I was looking through my old school work, and it’s so striking that I know I have to use it for SIA.” You can read more about the image here. I think it’s cool that Salazar has some of her old assignments. Now I’m inspired to go digging through my belongings to see what I may have…

As for this image… Hmmmm, let’s see. There are the obvious golds and blacks, metallics, and mattes, but there are also greys, whites, and browns. There is also a whole lot of pattern play, so there is plenty of room for interpretation.

What will you wear? I can’t wait to see.

MY LOOK

gold lace top with boyfriend jeans and brown sandals {living outside the stacks}

When I first saw the inspiration piece I wasn’t sure what I was going to wear. I knew I had this top, but I have a hard time wearing it because of the sheerness of the shoulder area. It’s not particularly bra friendly. Yes, I knew that when I bought it, but I thought I’d find a similar colored bra and I’d be ok.

I have not found a bra in this shade of gold. So I started playing around with the bras in my drawer and decided to pair it with a dark brown bra and *yay* it worked. I could’ve gone flesh colored too, but – and I don’t understand how this is possible – I do not own a flesh colored bra. I need to rectify that with a quickness.

Anyway, I ended up wearing this outfit to church and I felt completely comfortable. And I lean more towards the conservative side when I’m at church. I just got to the point where I’m comfortable where jeans to church. We grew up not wearing sleeveless tops, makeup, skirts above the knee, so, yeah…

I wanted to bring in some of the other colors from the inspiration piece, so I went with dark gray earrings, washed denim jeans, and brown sandals. I thought these items also added a little extra texture to my outfit.

I could’ve gone darker with my denim, but I’m such a fan of the vintage color of these jeans that I look for any excuse to wear them.

Leather Earrings {Nickel & Suede} – similar | Gold Lace Blouse {Kate and Mallory} – similar | Boyfriend Jeans {Laurie Felt} – similar | Sandals – similar

Are you a dark wash, light wash, or vintage wash denim fan? I have dark wash that I wear for work, but if I had to stick with one wash forever, it’d be vintage wash. Hands down.
