Just Being Me {In the Closet}

by Daenel

I so feel like the camel from the GEICO commercial… The week is almost over, y’all! I’m going to get to see the parental units this weekend, so that has me pretty excited. I enjoy seeing them, we make each other crazy like most families but we also have a lot of laughs. I’m also looking forward to breaking out the camera, it’s been so long since I’ve taken pictures of anything besides ummmm myself. Naturally, I’ve been mentally planning my outfits since we started talking about the visit. Oh, did I mention this is also a family reunion? Yeah, it is. I haven’t seen any of these people since I was like 10. That’s gonna be fun.

This outfit will not make the cut. It’s cute and all… But not go out in the dirt or whatever people do at family reunions kinda wear. This was actually one of my work outfits. Can I say again how much I appreciate not having to wear a uniform? Or abide by a strict dress code.

Normally, I keep my accessories to a minimum: wedding set and earrings. Every now and then I’ll throw on something extra if I remember. The day I wore this, it was all about that ring. That is one big honkin’ ring but I love it. It looks all fancy and e’erything. Just makes me wanna throw my pinky up when I drink. And it only set me back a buck. Yes, $1.

Beige Cardi Olive Tank and Lavender Maxi {Living Outside the Stacks}

Did you notice the nails? I got the idea from Pinterest. I thought it was just too funky not to try. My girls were like “Mom, that’s just crazy.” It’s not something I would wear on a regular basis, but for every now and then? Yeah, I can handle it… Next time, I want to try adding little gold bits similar to what’s in the original photo.

Do you want to know a secret about my skirt? It’s really a strapless dress. Clever, right? Well, I wanted to wear the dress to work, but ummmm strapless is hardly appropriate in the library, so I figured why not shimmy that baby down around my hips and see what happens. My co~workers were all “That’s soooo cute.” And I was like “Thank you.”

Maxi Skirt or Seamless Yoga Pants? {In the Closet}

by Daenel

I read somewhere {Pinterest, maybe?} that all girls feel dressed up in a maxi skirt but deep down inside we all know it’s just a pair of yoga pants without seams.  That statement made me laugh and nod my head in agreement. Really, jersey is probably one of the most fabulous fabrics ever.

Denim Jacket Animal Print Blouse and Black Maxi Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

I know I look like I’m dressed for Fall or Winter, except for the sandals,  in this outfit but this is what I wore to church last Sunday. It was burning up outside but ohmyword was it cold in the church. Seriously, what is up with the AC being on “morgue”? I think I should be granted control of the thermostat in all public spaces.

Zigzag Maxi Dress and Platform Shoes {In the Closet}

by Daenel

I’ve often said that I was born in the wrong decade. I should’ve been a flapper {I totally would’ve been hanging off some gangsta’s car} or a hippie {my hippie name is Dani Blue Sky Eagle Feather. Kid you not.}. But since my parents didn’t get their timing right, I have to play a hippie on my blog.

Gray Cardi and Print Maxi {Living Outside the Stacks}

From the zigzag print and the funky colors to the layered tiers, doesn’t this maxi dress just scream retro? And can we talk about the length? I wasn’t sure about the hi~lo hem because the back is so long that it actually drags on the ground… But when I found those shoes, I may have squealed a bit in the store. Those fabulous babies set me back a whopping $3.99! Aren’t they fab?

Gray Cardi and Print Maxi {Living Outside the Stacks}
About the bag. That bag is one of my favorite summer totes. My kids call it my “Toddler Stealing Bag” because it can fit a toddler quite comfortably. I won’t tell you how we know this. I know it doesn’t match {or even go with} my dress but I like it and, really, that’s all that matters.

Shoespiration {In the Closet}

by Daenel

This week’s outfit was inspired by…

 Pink Cardi Black and White Top and Green Tweed Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

 Pink Cardi Black and White Top and Green Tweed Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

…My shoes. I’ve had these pretties in my closet for years. This may be the second time I’ve worn them. What attracted them to me in the first place was the multi~colored floral pattern. They were unique and very different from anything else I owned.

Pink Cardi Black and White Top and Green Tweed Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

Dressing around my shoes led to a whole lot of pattern and color mixing. Florals with Dalmation spots, really? I think the black belt helped to ground all the colors and different textures from the knit of the cardi, to the sheen of the blouse, to the tweed in the skirt. Honestly, I think this may be the most I’ve ever had going on in one outfit.

Pink Cardi Black and White Top and Green Tweed Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

And before I go, can we discuss that Dalmation print blouse? It has a sweet little Peter Pan collar that just left me stumped. I tried leaving it unbuttoned but I didn’t like the way it fell. Maybe if I’d had a chunky necklace to fill in the gap? Have you noticed that seems to be a lot of my problem, a lack of necklace? Maybe it’s time for me to go jewelry shopping.

Do you have plans for the 4th?

Pretty Pink Peplum {In the Closet}

by Daenel

I’ve been seeing peplums everywhere. And every time, I’ve said “No, not me.” I think they’re adorbs, but I just saw it drawing more attention to my hips and midsection than I want. So I steered clear until I saw this cute little top on sale. It’s sheer, very femme. I thought it’d look cute balanced against my boyfriend jeans. I also have a seventeen~year~old at home who loves these types of tops, so if it didn’t work for me, at least she’d benefit.

Pink Tank Jeans and Yellow Wedges {Living Outside the Stacks}

I’m not completely sold but I’m not ready to pass the top on either.I think if I’d added a necklace to fill in the collar area it’d look a little cuter. Maybe something to bring out the greens or whites in the flowers. Note to self invest in whimsical jewelry. I also wonder if my choice of pants was off? Maybe a skinny jean?

Pink Tank Jeans and Yellow Wedges {Living Outside the Stacks}

I do think the bright yellow wedges and colorful beaded bracelets are a nice touch, don’t you?

Dressing Cute on a Budget {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Gray Sweater White Dress Black Tights and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}
A couple of days ago, the hubs and I were talking to a friend about our shopping habits after the friend asked if he has a problem with how much I spend on clothes. Obviously, this person doesn’t read my blog, because I state quite clearly where my clothes come from. Anyway, the hubs pointed out that much of what I wear comes from thrift stores, discount stores, and the sales racks, so, no, he doesn’t have a problem with my wardrobe. And, even if there was some question, I make my own money, so as long as I’m not shorting the family, the hubs is pretty easy on me about the spending. And the same goes for him.

Gray Sweater White Dress Black Tights and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

That being said, I do follow a variety of fashion bloggers and there’s a part of me that wonders how they manage to spend so much money on one blouse. Or a tube of lipstick. Is there a part of me that wishes that I could drop a couple of bills on a skirt or a pair of shoes at will? Yes, let’s be honest here, I’d love to have a cute pair of red bottomed shoes in my closet. But, I also know, that’s not my reality. I have kids and bills, I have to watch what I spend.

Gray Sweater White Dress Black Tights and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

So I compromise. I spend when and where I can. I want to prove to women out there that you can look cute on a budget.

Are you a shopper? How do you balance your need for style with your family’s need to eat?

All About the Shoes {In the Closet}

by Daenel

This week it’s all about the shoes. Specifically, the sandals. I absolutely adore these bejeweled babies. They make me feel feminine and funky at the same time. They can be dressed up with slacks and white top or dressed down with maxi skirt and tank.

Turquoise Button Down White Eyelet Skirt and Sandals {Living Outside the Stacks}

This week I chose to pair them with a simple white eyelet skirt and turquoise button down blouse. Simple yet chic. With just a hint of funk.

Favorite Looks {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Can I tell you how helpful these weekly posts have been? There are days when I stand in front of my closet, look at my clothes, and think I have absolutely nothing to wear. That’s when I have to jump on Pinterest and review outfits that I’ve worn that made me feel good. Having something to look back on helps me to refocus my energy from what could be a bad day to a fabulous day. I don’t know about you but if I’m not comfortable in my clothes, I’m miserable. But if I look good, I feel good, and the whole world becomes my personal runway.

So here are a few of my favorite outfits from the past few months…

Denim Jacket Blue Tee Brown Skirt and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I have to force myself not to wear this skirt every day. Every time I put it on, I turn into a 5~year~old girl and start twirling. Honestly, that skirt gives me life. It’s just so much fun. I think I need to pair it with these red cowboy boots. What do you think?

Citron Cardi Geek Tee and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

This outfit is just fun. Plain and simple.  Seriously, how can you go wrong with Kermit and hipster glasses? And don’t get me started on those oh~so~cool denim and brown oxfords. I’d been searching for oxfords for~ever when I found those at TJ Maxx I got all kinds of excited. Now I just need a cute little floral dress to wear with them.

Cream Cardi Citron Tee Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I adore this outfit for a variety of reasons:

  1. That cardi ~ it’s so cute and funky
  2. I like the cream against the citron and the brown
  3. Those boots are the most fabulous pair of footwear ever

But back to that cardi; that sweater is the reason I love Autumn. It’s just so comfy cozy.

Do you have a favorite outfit? Or an article of clothing that you absolutely adore?

Bohemian Cool {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Happy Wednesday! The week is almost up! hear the crowds cheering Honestly, I think there ought to be a graduated return to work after a holiday. You know, the first day, you work for half a day and then the next day you work a full day. It’s just so hard going back after a couple of days off.

Cream Top and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I wore this to work on Tuesday. It’s probably one of my favorite go to outfits during the summer: a flowy blouse, jeans, and sandals. I like it because I don’t have to suck in the gut. Although I do try, for the sake of my posture. And I don’t have to worry about wrinkles. In the blouse. Try as I might the wrinkle in my forehead is deepening. I blame the kids. The sandals are bronzy neutrals that go with everything.

Cream Top and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Miss 17 took pictures of me again this week. She has me doing some of the silliest stuff but what’re you gonna do? If your photographer gives you orders you kinda have to follow’em, right?

Switching It Up {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Pink Cardi, Yellow Blouse, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I’ve had this cardi in my drawer for years and almost never wear it. I’m not sure why because it really is cute. It kinda has a retro vibe with the beading around the collar. And the color is feminine without being too precious.

Pink Cardi, Yellow Blouse, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I decided to pair it with my yellow sleeveless blouse for some contrast. Normally, I wear a violet cardi with this top because it matches the flowers in the print. I know you can’t really see them, but they’re there. Trust me. And the leather floral bracelet is a little bit of cuteness that I picked up at a boutique in Pennsylvania. I remember haunting that store for months, yes, months, waiting for the right color. I wanted something sweet and feminine but with a bit of funk too it.

Pink Cardi, Yellow Blouse, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Once again, I’d like to thank my photographer, Miss 17, she of no warning before she snaps fame. Bless her heart, she really does try. I think. Or maybe she likes that I look like a deer caught in the headlights. Hmmm…

Denim Jackets and Playing Dress Up {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope you’re all having a beautiful week so far. I know I am, the sun is shining, we’re on our summer schedule at work… life is good.

This week’s theme for Wardrobe Wednesday is denim jackets…

Denim Jacket Blue Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I own two of them but rarely wear them. I’m not really certain why, because once I put them on, I’m like Hmmmm, I look cute in this. And, truth be told, a denim jacket really is the perfect completer piece. It can be formal or informal, it can be relaxed or structured. It can be boho or preppy. The denim jacket is quite possibly the most versatile piece of clothing you can have in your wardrobe.

Denim Jacket Blue Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I feel the same way about skirts and boots. This skirt is probably one of my favorite pieces of clothing because it’s just so girly. Did I really just say that? It also doesn’t hurt that I get compliments almost every time I wear it.

Denim Jacket Blue Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I’m also including a picture from my 40th birthday series, “Celebrating Me.” I decided to take a picture on the 10th of every month to celebrate my 40th year because these weekly wardrobe posts aren’t enough. insert eye roll

Celebrating Me {Living Outside the Stacks}

The best part about turning 40 and taking my own pictures is that I get to have way too much fun playing dress up. For this picture, I was inspired by one of my celebrity style icons, Nicole Richie. You can see her picture by clicking here. I went a little more 80’s Glam Rock while she’s 70’s Disco Queen but I think it still works. My other photos are here and here.

What fun photo would you like to take?

Mod Paisley Print Blouse {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Hi, all! Can you believe today is 1 May? Seriously, where has the time gone? Not that I’m complaining or anything because I’m really looking forward to some warm{er} weather. Although I have the sneaking suspicion that Mother Nature is playing a cruel trick on me because whenever we have nice weather I have meetings that keep me in doors all day but on weekends and days when I don’t have meetings not only does it pour down rain but it’s absolutely positively freezing as well. kicks rocks

Paisley Top, Jeans, and Mary Janes {Living Outside the Stacks}

On this particular day, I had several meetings, so, of course, the sun was sitting waaay up in the sky waving at me. I decided if I couldn’t go outside and enjoy the sun, I’d bring it inside with me the best I could, with this beautiful yellow paisley scarf top. I like that the print is kinda 60’s mod and that the shape hides all the stuff I didn’t feel like tucking into my jeans.

Paisley Top, Jeans, and Mary Janes {Living Outside the Stacks}

My inspiration was this outfit that I pinned from Suzanne Carillo Style Files. I just thought she looked so cute and chic with her kitten heels and clutch. Just adorbs!

Paisley Top, Jeans, and Mary Janes {Living Outside the Stacks}

Last week, I posted that my jeans came from Walmart and that seemed to spark some interest. Here’s the thing, as much as I like clothes and shoes, I like bags even more, so that’s where I spend my money. My interests change way too often. For months I’ll be obsessed with handbags, so I’ll save my money so that I can buy several designer ones. Then I’ll see a pair of shoes that I love and it’ll start a shoe thing. Next I’ll zoom in on skirts or blouses and the cycle begins again.

Just Hangin’ Out {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Special shout out to the hubs for convincing me that we needed a Keurig in our lives! Dude, you were so right!
Orange Cardi Cream Scarf Brown Cami and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope y’all are having a good week. Mine got a whole lot better when one of my co~workers pointed out that we’d be switching to our summer schedule in a little less than two weeks. happy dance

Orange Cardi Cream Scarf Brown Cami and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I don’t have big plans for the summer, just spending time with the family. Actually, you know what? Those are big plans. After everything that has happened in the last week, I don’t want to be accused of taking anything for granted. So my big plans consist of enjoying the warm weather with my kids, having friends and family visit (maybe even throw some yummies on the grill) and just being.

Orange Cardi Cream Scarf Brown Cami and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

And speaking of hanging out, the hubs and I had a date night with some friends this past weekend… We went to lunch, saw a movie, and just talked. I kept my outfit pretty casual because we also went on a tour of our friends’ new home which is in the final stages of construction and I’m not trying to break my neck looking all cute and e’erything.

So what’s up with you guys? Any plans for the weekend? The summer?

First Impressions {In the Closet}

by Daenel

For the most part, I’m comfortable with myself. There are days when I think I look like a big hulking figure clunking through the stacks at the library but then there are days when I feel like I’m strolling down my own personal red carpet. The times when I’m most unsure are when I’m meeting someone for the first time. First impressions are lasting impressions. So I usually try to wear something that makes me feel confident.

Cream Cardi Floral Dress Mustard Tights and Brown Mary Janes {Living Outside the Stacks}

And, believe it or not, short hair does it for me. I’d been wanting to cut my hair short for a long time but I’d been resisting the urge. Short hair makes me feel both funky and feminine.

Cream Cardi Floral Dress Mustard Tights and Brown Mary Janes {Living Outside the Stacks}

With short hair, I have to really work to keep from looking too masculine, so that means wearing girly clothes, fun accessories, and more makeup. Yes, Shontel, that includes lipstick. My sister is forever telling me that I need to wear lipstick.

Makes My Heart Race {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Kelly, who hosts Wardrobe Wednesday, asked us to share an outfit or a piece of jewelry that makes our hearts race. I had to think long and hard about this theme because I have a lot of things in my closet that have sentimental value but I guess the things that get me most excited are the things that I own that help others.

Floral Peasant Shirt, Jeans, Sseko Sandals {Living Outside the Stacks}

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine told me about these adorable sandals by Sseko Designs. Profits from the sale of each pair of Sseko Designs sandals goes to help women in Africa with scholarship and employment opportunities. I purchased mine at a sweet little store in Cape Girardeau called Philanthropy, where a percentage of the proceeds from every purchase goes towards a charitable organization.

Sseko Designs {Living Outside the Stacks}

The straps on the sandals can be tied in a multitude of ways and there are all sorts of colors and accessories available for the sandals. Love.

Ring from Target {Living Outside the Stacks}

Another one of my favorite pieces is this ring from Target. I absolutely love the size, shape, and color of this ring. It’s just so funky and exotic looking, no?

Weird Compliments {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Last week I shared an interesting grocery store encounter with my Facebook friends, so I decided to share it here because it was, well, weird. Although deep down inside I’m sure it was meant as a compliment…

Cashier #1: “When we go out tonight, I wanna wear what she’s wearing.” (looking at me)
Cashier #2: “You wanna go shopping?”
Cashier #1: “No, I want what she has on right now. Take her clothes…”
Me: “Uhhhh” I didn’t know what to do with that conversation so I backed away slowly

Denim Jacket Black Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I didn’t think there was anything particularly theft worthy about my outfit. Just about everything was purchased either second hand or on clearance.Denim Jacket Black Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

OUTFIT DEAL: TEES FROM WALMART ~ $5.99 each

In fact, the most expensive thing I’m wearing is that handbag. It’s by Sharif for HSN. I love most of his bags. They’re just this side of funky and you don’t see everyone carrying them.

Denim Jacket Black Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Now I’ve had people compliment my outfits before but I’ve never had anyone want to take the clothes off my back. So that brings me to this, have you ever received a compliment that kinda freaked you out?

Warding Off the Chill {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Hi, everyone! How’re things going in your neck of the woods? It’s still kinda chilly cold here. And I am so over it. Seriously, y’all where is Spring?
 Brown Jacket Citron Sweater and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

To ward off the chill, I decided to dress in layers and add a handmade scarf. You can’t tell but that scarf has gold thread woven through it that gives it just a bit of glitz.

Brown Jacket Citron Sweater and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Those jeans are rapidly becoming my faves; I like that they’re all broken in and kinda baggy. A couple of more washes and they’ll have the perfect amount of softness to them.

 Brown Jacket Citron Sweater and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

OUTFIT DEAL: Corduroy Jacket from Goodwill ~ $3.99

This is what I wore on Saturday to hang out with the hubs. We went out for breakfast, ran some errands, and then visited a couple of antique shops. The hubs found some candlestick holders that he liked; I found a vase and a vintage embroidered handbag from India. You can take a sneak peek at the handbag by clicking here. My plan is to use as a decorative accessory for the end table but I may carry it on a date night.

Pattern Mixing {In the Closet}

by Daenel

It was bound to happen, after months of watching other bloggers do it and do it well, I’ve finally mixed my patterns! I don’t know what took me so long, I guess it was nerves. We were always taught to never ever mix florals and plaids or stripes and dots.

Salmon Cardi Floral Tee and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

But then we were also taught not to wear white after Labor Day and I threw that out the window years ago. So, you’d think I would’ve tossed this rule too. Maybe I’m a little bit more traditional than I like to think. shudder

Salmon Cardi Floral Tee and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

This pattern mixing worked for me because the main color of the cardi matched the accent colors in the tee. I don’t know if I could do pattern matching with mixed matched colors. Which is so odd for me considering my matching code goes something like this: “If you see the colors together in nature, you can wear them together on your body.”

Salmon Cardi Floral Tee and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

OUTFIT DEAL: Target Tee from Goodwill (with the tags) ~ $3.99

And speaking of being traditional and all that, I recently read a discussion about how female bloggers (specifically, fashion bloggers) are all starting to dress alike because they’re we’re being so influenced by each other. Hmmm, interesting thought but I don’t agree. I think, if anything, there’s more celebration and embracing of the uniqueness and diversity of style that exists among women.

What do you think? Are we all starting to dress alike?

Geek is Chic {In the Closet}

by Daenel

A few weeks ago I was asked by a friend if I ever have a casual day. Ummmm, yeah. All. The. Time. Most of the pictures that I post for What I Wore Wednesday are taken when I’ve either just gotten home from work or before I head off to church. If I’m just hanging out around the house, I’m in jeans and a tee or, much to the hub’s horror, sweats and an over sized tee.

Citron Cardi Geek Tee Jeans and Oxfords {Living Outside the Stacks}

However, last Friday I was feeling pretty rushed casual, so I wore a tee, cardi, and jeans to work. I “amped” it up a bit by adding a pair of funky oxfords. Fortunately, for me, I work in a relatively casual environment so I didn’t raise too many eyebrows. Although I was called “geek” all day long. I didn’t mind. I own my geekiness.

And, you know what, you can never go wrong with Kermit. AmIright?
