Granny Square Afghan {In the Craft Room}

by Daenel

For about a year and half, the hubs has been telling me that I need to make something for the house. And each time he says it, I agree and then I pack up whatever project I’ve been working on and I ship it off to a new home. My intent wasn’t to ignore him, it’s just that people would see what I was working on and want it so I’d give it away. But when we moved into our new home and started decorating, I knew I wanted to make something, I just wasn’t sure what. The hubs suggested a blanket for nights when we cuddle on the sofa and watch “The Walking Dead”. Yeah, we’re romantic like that.

Almost immediately, I started mentally going over the different patterns I knew and what I thought would fit with our home. After mulling it over and talking with the hubs, I decided to go with Granny Squares. I wanted the blanket to have a vintage feel, like it’s been around for awhile. Our home has been accessorized with things we’ve found out in antique shops, thrift stores and yard sales so our home has a decidedly eclectic decor…

The colors in our living room are wine, dark teal, cream, and brown; so off we went to the craft store in search of yarn. The hubs suggested that I border everything in black. At first I was like ummmm, no but now that it’s finished I love it. I think it makes the other colors pop.

Love {Advent Bible Study}

by Daenel

The focus of this week’s Advent study is LOVE. Love means to have a strong affection for anther arising out of kinship or personal ties. It also means to have an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another.

Love ~ Advent Bible Study {Living Outside the Stacks}

SCRIPTURE

1 John 4:7 {KJV}

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

OBSERVATION

When I first looked up “Love” in the Webster’s Dictionary, the first entry was for maternal love, the second for romantic love and a bit further down, the love God has for mankind. This struck me as wrong. I know the dictionary isn’t a religious book but the first act of love ever demonstrated was when God sent His son to die for us {John 3:16, John 15:13).

God’s love is sacrificial, benevolent and unwarranted, this is how our love for one another should be.

APPLICATION

This week, we’re challenged to demonstrate our love for one another through random acts of kindness. I love this. For the last week, we’ve had a mitten tree at work for collecting articles of clothing such as gloves, hats and scarves for those in need. So I decided to crochet scarves to go on the tree. To me, nothing says love more than something handmade. And while, I may not ever meet the person who gets one of my scarves, I’ll know that somewhere out there, someone is keeping warm with God’s love through my hands.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the example that you gave us of perfect love. Thank you for giving us the greatest gift of all, eternal life through your son, Jesus Christ. I ask that on this week, you help me to find ways to demonstrate your love to anyone who crosses my path. Let them see you in me. And, Lord, bless each person who receives something from the mitten tree. Keep them strong and healthy. Reveal your love to them.

Amen

ABOUT THE STUDY

This month, I will be participating in the Advent Study, Keeping Our Hearts Focused on Jesus, hosted by the ladies at Good Morning Girls. Good Morning Girls are a group of Christian women who email, Facebook, Twitter and text message each other to keep them accountable for their quiet times. You can even catch them on Instagram, just follow the hashtag #goodmorninggirls.

Having quiet time in the Word is a great way to begin or end the day. It gives you time to focus on God and His will for your life as well as to renew and refresh your strength. I encourage you to take a few minutes out of your day and spend some time just reading and thinking about the Lord.

If you’re joining in, please leave a comment below so I can pray with you.

Infinity Scarf DIY {On the Hook}

by Daenel

Mustard Infinity Scarf {Living Outside the Stacks}

I love mustard. Not the condiment, the color. Well, no, I like the condiment too but this isn’t a food post. That’s coming on Thursday, so stick around. Hint: it involves potatoes, corn and shrimp… Anyway, back to the scarf, I’ve been seeing mustard colored clothing and accessories everywhere, yet it was lacking in my wardrobe. Then I remembered this beautiful golden mustard colored yarn I had tucked away and instant happiness was upon me.

It took me about three days to whip up this lacy scarf. And don’t you just love the brooch? I may have to hit up some thrift stores for some more.

After posting a picture of the scarf on Facebook, I received a lot of requests for the pattern, so here it is. Just remember I’m not a pattern writer, so I did things the best I could.

  1. Chain 35
  2. Turn. Chain 5. Skip 2 chain’s on the base chain. Single crochet in the next chain. Chain 5. Skip next 3 chains and single crochet in the next chain. Repeat all the way across, ending with a single crochet.
  3. Turn. Chain 5. Single crochet over the center of the chain 5 (do not go through the stitch). Skip next chain, chain 5. Repeat all the way across, ending with a single crochet over the turning chain.
  4. Repeat step 3 until you reach the desired length for your scarf.

Variations

  • You can make the scarf long so you can double wrap it and let the ends hang loose
  • You can make an infinity scarf by single crocheting the ends together, this creates a ruched effect.

Retro Baby Blanket {On the Hook}

by Daenel

Retro Baby Blanket {Living Outside the Stacks}

Retro Baby Blanket {Living Outside the Stacks}

I’ve spent the last few months working on this baby blanket. Not steady work, just off and on when I haven’t felt like doing much of anything else. You know those days, when you need to do something but you don’t want to think too much or too hard?

The blanket is for a young couple at our church who are having a baby boy in the next few months. They have two of the most adorable little girls, all bubbly and bouncy and full of giggles, ribbons and bows. That poor little boy is going to have a hard way to go. Smile.

I selected the colors:

  • Aran
  • Turquoise
  • Latte
  • Coffee

Because I thought they were appropriately boy but not traditionally boy. The parents are a young and hip couple with a Christian rock edge to them. And, well, I like coffee so any colors that evoke images of my beloved beverage can’t be wrong, right? Right.

I still have the vest from a few months back that I need to finish, but I don’t see that happening any time soon. Maybe I’ll try my hand at something new like boot socks. Or leg warmers. Or fingerless gloves. Or a hat.

Crocheted Flowers and Pin/Scarf Set ~ Handmade by me

Classes have ended and the students are gone, so it’s time for us to rearrange the library.  That means moving furniture, shifting books, scraping up things that can’t be identified except in a CSI crime lab.  So that means sore muscles, tired bones and boring What I Wore Wednesday and Real Momma, Real Style pictures…  Hopefully, we’ll get back to the “clean” side of librarianship soon and I can start posting pretty pictures again.

Until then do me a favor and leave a comment telling me why you love your library.  Library budgets are being cut left and right, and if anyone knows the value of books, it’s us moms.

The crochet flowers will be for sale as either a scarf and pin set or individually.  The flowers can be worn as brooches or hair clips (they have alligator teeth clips attached to them).  The brooches/hair clips will be $12 each and the scarf and pin set will be $25 each.

Sunday’s Work Outfit

My favorite outfit this week.  I bought the cardi years ago because I loved the appliqué flowers, I just wasn’t sure how to wear it.  Between moving it from drawer to drawer and shifting it to the bottom of the closet, it lost some buttons.  I finally replaced the buttons with some that match the flowers and threw it on with a cami and a pair of jeans.  Ummmm, why’d it take me so long to think of that?  And I just love love love my flower bracelet.

Now on to this week’s What I Wore Wednesday…

Sunday ~ Handmade Headband

Last week, I taught myself how to make a three~strand headband, so I was feeling pretty proud of my creativity, so this week, I decided to step it up a notch and make another one with ribbon and a crocheted flower.  I’m pretty proud of my handiwork.

What I Wore Monday

Sequin Tank ~ Kmart
White Tank ~ Hanes T~Shirts
Cardi ~ Target
“Faith, Love, Hope” Necklace ~ Thrifted

For the past few seasons I’ve been fascinated by all things sparkly so I finally purchased a sequin tank but I was too scared of the disco ball effect around my mid~section so I never wore it.  On Monday, I thought What the heck?  I’m wearing my sequin tank and I don’t give a rip! Besides, Miss 17 said if I’m bold enough to wear sequins to work in the library I should be brave enough to ignore my own perceived imperfections. I big puffy heart my daughter.  She ruined it by stating “Anyway, if you looked bad, trust me, I’d tell you.”  I know she would…

What I Wore Tuesday

Tunic ~ Burlington Coat Factory
Necklace ~ Target
Handbag ~ Global Chic by Iman for HSN

I love love love my big  ol’ yellow handbag.  And when I say big, I mean huuuuge.  It could fit a toddler very comfortably.  That’s also one of the reasons I don’t carry it very often, it’s big and it’s heavy but, dang, if it ain’t cute.

Do you have something in your closet that you adore but can’t figure out how to wear?
