Happy New Year!

by Daenel

Welcome to 2013! I’m so excited about the possibilities that come with a new year. It’s almost like life is giving us some sort of cosmic do over. And boy do I need it! I missed some of my goals for last year but I’m pressing forward and not dwelling on the past. I hope that you’ll continue to share this journey with me and that you’re just as excited for 2013 as I am…

Morning Coffee {Living Outside the Stacks}

I began today much like I do any other day, with a cup of coffee. This is how I prepare myself for the day’s activities: a cup of coffee and a few minutes of silence. And with this being the beginning of a new year, I used my quiet time to think about all the things I will accomplish.

This year I’ll be turning the big 4~Oh! This is so hard for me to believe. There are days when I feel like I’m barely out of my twenties. And a lot of days when I look at those four teenagers living in my house and wonder why they’re calling me “Mom”. You’d think after nineteen years I’d be used to them by now. I’m not sure what I’m going to do to mark this milestone birthday, but I know I have to do something big.

I’ve joined not one but two photography challenges for this year. Like last year, I’ll be joining in the Photo A Day Challenge hosted by fat mum slim and posting the pictures on Instagram (be sure to follow me there). The second challenge is the one I’m most worried excited about because it requires that I use Nikki (my Nikon D3100). Poor Nikki hasn’t been getting out as often as she used to since I started working. Mostly she’s been relegated to taking outfit pictures but we all know she’s capable of so much more. So I’ll be stretching my creativity and, hopefully, learning some new tricks along the way. You can view my photos from  365: The 2013 Edition by clicking here.

At church I’ll be busy with the women’s group. Pastor Z asked me if I would help lead the women’s group. squee and eek I agreed because I thought it might be fun and since I’m not reading the Bible in 90 Days this year, I thought this would be a fun way to engage myself with other ladies in a study of God’s word. Our first study will be True Woman 101: Divine Design by Mary Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss. I’ve already run it by the ladies and they’re all kinds of excited about the study and the discussions that we’ll be having.

I’ll also be doing some product reviews, sharing some of my favorite books and, hopefully, hosting a whole lot more giveaways. As always, I enjoy reading your comments, so please don’t be shy, leave a comment whether you agree or disagree; life is all about learning and sharing.

And I look forward to sharing 2013 with you! Be blessed and be happy!

June Photo A Day {Photography}

by Daenel

May’s Photo A Day Challenge was a bust. I’m not even sure when, where or how I fell off the wagon, I just know that I did. But I did enjoy seeing everyone else’s contributions. It really is a lot of fun getting a glimpse into the lives of others. Just seeing what’s going on in other parts of the country and, in some cases, other parts of the world can be so inspiring.

Chantelle at fat mum slim has released her list for the June Photo A Day Challenge, which starts Friday. Will you participate? Leave a comment below letting me know where I can find your pictures, I’d sure love to see them.

Oh, yes, I’m at again. Except this time I’m being overly ambitious and doing a daily photo challenge. For. The. Entire. Month. Of. March. I know, right? Because I didn’t learn anything the first time I tried this. Well, that’s actually not true. I learned that I can’t rely on my own creativity, so thanks to some helpful prompts by fat mum slim, I’ll be stretching my photographic muscles all month long.

Photography: Changing My Perspective

by Daenel

I’m always on the lookout for new photography tips because, well, I’m trying desperately to teach myself how to use my camera. I’m not trying to become a pro or anything, I just wanna capture the best, most interesting shots that I can.

So when I read Julie Rivera’s post on I Heart Faces about lowering your camera angle to change your perspective, I thought, I can do that. Generally, when I take pictures, I stand with my legs spread and my elbows pressed into my sidec for stability which means that I’m almost always looking down on my subjects instead of meeting them at their level (children and pets) or getting creative angles (inanimate objects as well as people). So today, I decided to challenge myself and shoot from varying angles just to see what happens.

I’m pretty happy with what I got…

Challenging My Perspective

For this picture, I laid the camera on the floor and set the timer for 10 seconds. You should have seen me running to the fireplace and “posing” my feet… I thought I’d get a lot of carpet  fibers or something in the shot but I think it came out pretty clear.

Changing My Perspective: Squeekerz

For these pictures, I got down on my belly so that I was eye level with the dog ~ he totally loved it and tried to express his love by licking my camera. Lesson learned? Be prepared to scooch real fast!

How do you take pictures? Do you vary your stance depending on your subject?

A Day in My Life in Pictures

by Daenel

The other day, I read a guest post on i heart faces by Jason Zimmerman about how to capture a day in your life using pictures.  I absolutely loved his pictures and decided to give it a try.  My pictures didn’t come out as great, interesting or fascinating as his did but it’s my life and I love it.  And um, capturing a day in your life in photographs is harder than I thought.

My Day in Pictures

I took over 100 pictures using my GE X500, a tripod and cell phone.  At the end of the day, I narrowed it down to 62 images.  Then I uploaded them to my computer and began the editing process.  Whew.  That took forever.  I cropped, rotated and changed everything to black and white using Picasa.  Like Zimmerman, I used black and white to make everything a little more cohesive.  I also used the “make a collage” tool on Picasa to create the collages.

My Day in Pictures

I ended up getting my family involved in my crazy and had the hubs take two of the pictures (the one of me at Verizon and the one of me at Taco Bell).  My kids had to deal with people looking at me like I’d lost my mind as I walked around snapping pictures of myself.

My Day in Pictures

Some things I learned from this challenge:

  • Having multiple cameras (at least one with a timer), a tripod and a remote (which I don’t have yet) are essential
  • You’ll need more pictures than you think but you’ll use much less than you took
  • Take pictures from different and unusual angles to keep things interesting
  • Unposed pictures and random moments like the dog running to greet you are the most fun
  • It’s better to use fewer big images than a lot of smaller images
  • Putting the pictures in black and white improves everything
  • You have to be shameless, people will stare at the crazy person taking multiple pictures of themselves

My Day in Pictures

I don’t know if I’d ever do this again but I certainly had fun accepting the challenge.

Have you ever taken pictures of yourself or your life throughout the day?  Was it a challenge?  Did you have fun?
