Tips for Shopping Vintage {In the Closet}

Don’t you just love the pop of orange from my bag? When I first saw it, I thought I’m never gonna carry an orange purse. But, now? I absolutely adore it. Because it’s such a bold color, I like to pair it with more muted/neutral tones like browns, dark greens, plums, etc. And it’s hands free, which was great for a day spent touring a college campus. There’s only one picture because Miss 18 doesn’t like her life on the interwebs. If you’d like to see the picture, click here.

I was at Annie Laurie’s Antiques in Cape Girardeau a few weeks ago and absolutely positively fell head over heels in want with this ring. Normally, I’m not drawn to silver rings but the big ol’ hunk of green called to me. And it didn’t hurt that the ring cost me less than $10.

I shop at Annie Laurie’s Antiques on a fairly regular basis because I can pick up unique pieces that don’t cost a fortune. Here are a few tips that I use when I’m on the hunt:

  1. Be open to things you wouldn’t normally purchase full price ~ the ring is a prime example
  2. Move things around ~ antique stores are not like traditional stores, things are spread out all over the place
  3. Visit often ~ every time I go to Annie Laurie’s I find something new and exciting
  4. Check for wear and tear ~ some antique/vintage stores don’t have a return policy, so check out seams and areas that are easily worn before you plunk down the cash
  5. Carry cash ~ sometimes vendors are willing to haggle if you’re using cash, especially at outdoor markets

Fade to Dark {In the Closet}

Red Cardi, White Blouse, and Brown Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

I adore this brown tweed skirt so much. I seriously think it may be one of my best thrift store purchases yet. I like that the waist band is very fitted and holds in all of my jiggly bits. And the little bow on the hip adds just a touch of sweetness, which is a nice counter to the rugged boots and socks.

I thought the red added an unexpected splash of color to an otherwise very neutral outfit.

I apologize for the pictures. Now that it’s getting dark earlier, it’s hard to find decent lighting. I’m thinking I’ll probably slow down the Wednesday style posts. My house to dark for interior shots, and, as much as I big puffy heart you guys, I don’t know if I can wake up any earlier than I already do to take pictures.

How do you work around lighting issues?

Corduroy Skirt and Patterned Tights {In the Closet}

Brown Sweater, Floral Skirt, and Burgundy Tights {Living Outside the Stacks}

Have I mentioned how much I loooove sweaters? How about corduroy? And, ohmygosh, tights? Autumn is definitely my season.

And don’t those colors just scream Autumn? I think that’s what I like most: the rusts, the browns, the golds, and the purples. Or maybe it’s the coziness of the sweaters. On second third thought, I do like the pattern play on my legs.

Do you wear tights? Are you pattern girl or a solids lady?

Pantone~Inspired Fall Color Challenge: Day 4 {In the Closet}

Cream Cardi Peach Blouse Brown Skirt and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Today’s color is “Carafe”, which looks a lot like brown to me. I assume that this is somehow related to the carafe in a coffee maker, so I figured why not match a rich dark roasted coffee bean?

I absolutely love coffee. I love the taste, the smell, the feel, the sight… It’s just a feast for the senses. So finding something in a deep rich brown was incredibly easy for me.

I wasn’t sure about the boots but I thought wearing the black ones would be a little too heavy. And, well, you know, fashion is all about taking risks, right?

What was the last fashion risk you took?

All About the Shoes {In the Closet}

This week it’s all about the shoes. Specifically, the sandals. I absolutely adore these bejeweled babies. They make me feel feminine and funky at the same time. They can be dressed up with slacks and white top or dressed down with maxi skirt and tank.

This week I chose to pair them with a simple white eyelet skirt and turquoise button down blouse. Simple yet chic. With just a hint of funk.

Electric blue toes and big ol’  jewels.
