Happy New Year and 2014 Plans {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Happy New Year! Do you have big plans for 2014? I don’t have any resolutions. I have a hard time with those because I never follow through with them. I do have a few goals for this year:

  • Read the Bible in a Year ~ I read the Bible in 90 days a few years ago and enjoyed it. I think it’s time to do it again but on a less intense level.
  • Sign on for One Word 2014 ~ last year’s word was “Life”… I’m still not sure what this year’s word will be but I’m sure God will reveal it in His time.
  • Learn to use my Nikon D3100 ~ it’s a shame that I have this beautiful piece of equipment and I don’t know how to use it properly.

Gray Cardi Black Belt Dark Purple Skirt and Black Shoes {Living Outside the Stacks}

This is my last Sunday in 2014 Church outfit: a denim shirt under a cardi with a skirt. I’ve had that skirt in my closet since Summer. I wasn’t sure when, if, or how I’d wear it. But I knew I had to try. I just love the tulle panels. It makes it dressy without being too precious. I could easily see it with a t~shirt and a pair of black moto boots. Funny, how all of these ideas are coming to me now.

Let’s talk about the necklace, shall we? That little piece of fabulous was purchased from a vintage store when I lived in Pennsylvania. The clasp weakened and finally broke about a year ago so it’s been hanging in my closet since then. Because, well, I didn’t want to toss it. It’s so pretty. But I had the brilliant idea on Sunday to secure it with flowers and YAY, my necklace is reborn.

And then there’s Clayton, my new Florentine leather bag from Dooney and Bourke. I am so in love with that bag right now that if I had a child, I would name him or her Clayton. In fact, I love this bag so much that I may just legally change one of my kid’s names. The bag is huge, like toddler stealing size. This bag is definitely my new PFF {Purse Friend Forever}.

Some of My Favorite Outfits of 2013 {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Wow, you guys, this year is rapidly coming to an end and, like every good blogger, it’s time to do that year in review. Normally, I’d wait until the last year of the week but, I think this year, I’d like to take that week just to kick back and relax. So, here goes…

Cream Cardi Citron Tee Denim Leggings and Brown Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I remember when I found that cardi at Goodwill, I immediately knew how I was going to wear it: with citron and brown. Seriously, can you think of a better color combination? It’s neutral but still has POP! And I think the wooden bracelet and the fabric wrapped bracelets just add to earthy feel of my outfit.

Faux Fur Collar Gray Cardi and Navy Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

This outfit totally made me feel like I’d just stepped out of a vintage ad. I’ve had that faux fur collar in my closet for yeeeears, attached to a sweater I knew I’d never wear but couldn’t bear to part with because of the faux fur collar. Then it finally dawned on me: TAKE THE COLLAR OFF, SILLY GIRL! Paired with a full skirt {thank you again, Goodwill} and those super cool Mary Janes and, yeah, I was prepared to give June Cleaver a run for her money.

Brown Jacket Citron Sweater and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I like this outfit for two reasons: the blazer and the boots! I’m so not a blazer girl, but this blazer has totally converted me. It’s another Goodwill find. Can I tell you how much I appreciate our donors at Goodwill? They have fabulous taste. And, um, hat tip to the citron and gold that bring this outfit to life.

Denim Jacket Black Tee Brown Skirt and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

The hubs and I were grocery shopping the first time I wore this outfit. It almost became the last time. The cashier looked at me and yelled at her friend: “I want her outfit.” Her friend asked me where I got it and as I started to reply, the cashier said: “No, I want to take the outfit off of her and wear it out tonight.” blank stare Needless to say, it was a long time before I went back to that store.

Brown Corduroy Jacket Neutral Scarf Gray Cardi and Denim Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

Of all of the outfits pictured, this is probably the one that most closely matches what I wear to work on a regular basis. Again, it’s all the neutrals with the pop of color. And the layers. I just feel all warm and cozy. And incredibly self confident.

Mustard, the Perfect Neutral {In the Closet}

Mustard is quite possibly the most perfect color on earth. And I say that as a serious lover of purple. Seriously, is there a color that mustard doesn’t go with? You can pair it with reds, blues, browns, greens, grays… Neutrals and brights. It serves as a great base for prints and a pop for solids.

You absolutely positively cannot go wrong with mustard!

What’s your favorite mustard color combination?

Feeling Bold in a Muted Sorta Way {In the Closet}

Hey, hey, hey! What up, people? Nothing much on my side, just chillin’. Can you believe it’s December already? Seriously, where did the year go? I don’t know if it’s that I’m older or what, but it feels like time just flies by nowadays…

The weather has been absolutely gorgeous the past few days. In fact, it’s been so nice that I’ve been comfortable wearing a simple cardigan and tights with my skirts. I’m so not used to this kind of weather in November/December. Y’all, I moved here from Pennsylvania. I’m used to freeeeezing. But that’s supposed to change later this week. I’m not happy about this. At all.

The inspiration for this outfit came from one I saw on Pinterest, naturally. I was drawn to the warm colors and the ditzy print in the blouse {which I couldn’t replicate because I have nothing like it}. I think the outfit has a retro vibe without being all costumy.

All Coffee Mugs Should Wear Tutus and You Should Wear Stripes {In the Closet}

by Daenel

20131126-230620.jpg

Tell me the truth, isn’t that coffee mug quite possibly one of the cutest things you’ve ever seen? When I first saw her at Starbucks, my coffee lovin’ heart was all I die! Between the tutu, the stripes, and the bow tie, I was done. Seriously, look at her. How could I not bring her home with me?

20131126-230658.jpg

I remember reading an article once where a designer said something along the lines of stripes should be a part of every outfit. A few years ago I would’ve disagreed based solely on the argument that stripes make me look wide. Now, I see them as a fun addition to my closet. And I’m so over the fat talk. Paired with solids, stripes add interest to an outfit. And up against another pattern such as florals, stripes scream whimsy.

Tips for Shopping Vintage {In the Closet}

Don’t you just love the pop of orange from my bag? When I first saw it, I thought I’m never gonna carry an orange purse. But, now? I absolutely adore it. Because it’s such a bold color, I like to pair it with more muted/neutral tones like browns, dark greens, plums, etc. And it’s hands free, which was great for a day spent touring a college campus. There’s only one picture because Miss 18 doesn’t like her life on the interwebs. If you’d like to see the picture, click here.

I was at Annie Laurie’s Antiques in Cape Girardeau a few weeks ago and absolutely positively fell head over heels in want with this ring. Normally, I’m not drawn to silver rings but the big ol’ hunk of green called to me. And it didn’t hurt that the ring cost me less than $10.

I shop at Annie Laurie’s Antiques on a fairly regular basis because I can pick up unique pieces that don’t cost a fortune. Here are a few tips that I use when I’m on the hunt:

  1. Be open to things you wouldn’t normally purchase full price ~ the ring is a prime example
  2. Move things around ~ antique stores are not like traditional stores, things are spread out all over the place
  3. Visit often ~ every time I go to Annie Laurie’s I find something new and exciting
  4. Check for wear and tear ~ some antique/vintage stores don’t have a return policy, so check out seams and areas that are easily worn before you plunk down the cash
  5. Carry cash ~ sometimes vendors are willing to haggle if you’re using cash, especially at outdoor markets

My Favorite Outfits {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

Hi, everyone! How was your Christmas? Mine was wonderful. The hubs read the Christmas story to the kids and we talked about why we celebrate Christmas, how we’ve been blessed over the year, and then gave the kids their gifts. Even though our kids are teenagers, I like the tradition that we established when they were little people. It feels comfortable. Do you have any Christmas traditions?

Another tradition I have is to do a review of the past year’s blog posts. It’s fun to look back and see how I’ve changed and to see what goals I’ve accomplished and what goals I need to push with me into 2013. So I thought it’d be fun to start my review with some of my favorite outfits from the past year.

What I Wore 6 June

Brown, Cream and Green Sleeveless Dress {Living Outside the Stacks}

Dress ~ Dress Barn

I bought this dress to wear to a wedding years ago. Unfortunately, we were unable to attend the wedding so the dress sat unworn for months. Since then I’ve worn it twice. And every time I put it on I feel so elegant. Almost like I should be on the cover of a magazine.

What I Wore 11 July

Print Blouse and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Blouse ~ Deb’s

Jeans, Wedges ~ Kmart

Hands down, this is one of my favorite summer outfits. The colors on the blouse light up my face and the jeans fit like a dream. And, well, you can’t go wrong with wedges.

What I Wore 5 September

Denim Jacket, White Sundress  and Cowboy Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Denim Jacket, Sundress ~ Walmart

Cowboy Boots ~ Thrifted

This outfit was totally built around those cowboy boots. When I saw them at the store I literally squealed; I’d been wanting a pair of cowboy boots forever. And, come on, they’re red and they’re fabulous.

What I Wore 8 October

Citron, Purple Polka Dots, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi ~ Target

Blouse ~ Thrifted

Jeans ~ Kmart

Boots ~ Payless

I’d been trying to get more color into my life and I think I nailed it here. The citron in the sweater goes with the purple, greens and oranges in the blouse without being all matchy matchy. Nothing but fun.

What I Wore 17 October

Black Cardi, Tank, Khaki Skirt, Tights and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi, Boots ~ HSN.com

Tank, Skirt ~ Walmart

Tights ~ Rite Aid

Again, it’s all about the boots. Aren’t they fabulous? They’re Sebago and they’re sold on HSN.com. I do believe they are the best boots ever. They’re incredibly comfortable and versatile; I can wear them with anything. And that sweater? I waited months for it to go on sale. It was totally worth it.

What I Wore 13 November

Teal Cardi, Tank and Brown Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi ~ Deb’s

Tank ~ Kmart

Skirt ~ Thrifted

I absolutely adore the color combination here. Normally, I would’ve played it safe and worn a brown sweater but popping it with the teal just pulled it all together. I also stepped outside of my comfort zone and wore a belt around my waist. I almost never do that but I like the way it defined my waist. You can check out my favorite thrifted outfits by clicking here.

What I Wore 11 December

Black Sweater, Brown Cami, Floral Skirt and Black Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Sweater ~ Walmart

Floral Pins ~ Handmade by Me

Cami ~ Kmart

Skirt ~ Thrifted

Boots ~ Payless

I heart this skirt so much! It makes me feel all girly and fun. I just wanna grab the hem and twirl like a little girl. And the boots keep everything from feeling too precious.

So that’s it, my favorite outfits from 2012. I’m looking forward to sharing a happy, healthy and fashionable 2013 with you.
