Navigating through life away from the library

Maxed Out

Black Batwing Sweater Denim Maxi and Black Boots {Living Outside the Stacks} If you’ll remember, last week I wrote about how my daughter said that my style can best be described as Mori Kei and I said “Sometimes.” Well, this is why. In my heart of hearts, I’m a hippie. I remember telling my mom that I was born in the wrong decade, she totally should have had me earlier. Black Batwing Sweater Denim Maxi and Black Boots {Living Outside the Stacks} I wore this outfit to work and, honest to goodness, I kept waiting for a student to shush me because of all the jingling. For those of you who don’t know, I’m librarian. Obviously, I don’t work on the quiet floor. Arm Candy {Living Outside the Stacks} I love bracelets, in fact, they’re probably the only pieces of jewelry that I wear on a consistent basis {besides my wedding set}. I like the way they feel and look in my morning picturesA little note about the watch, I’m notorious for forgetting to replace the batteries, so when they die, I set my watch to 1 o’clockthe time The Hubs and I were married. As for the Fitbit, it’s not pretty but it’s functional. And, as much as I like to preach fashion over function, sometimes you just have to deal… Black Batwing Sweater Denim Maxi and Black Boots {Living Outside the Stacks} So, yeah, I was also having a particularly good great hair day. I’m in the process of transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair {again}, so all fabulous hair days must be documented and celebrated. So WOO HOO!

Mori Kei? Bohemian? Still Working It Out

Neutral Top Scarf and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

A few days ago, Miss 21 (my daughter) introduced me to Mori Kei. She says this somewhat accurately describes my style. When I looked it up, one of the first things that popped up on my screen was an image of a bird skeleton that had been turned into hair décor. What the heck have I been wearing that my daughter thinks I’d wear bird skeletons to work? In the library. Or, at all, for that matter. I’m afraid of birds. Like deathly afraid of birds. And real {un}live bird skeletons?! Are you kidding me?!

After she stopped laughing and I decided against grounding her for life, she showed me some of the images that had popped up on her screen. Now I’m wondering what Google knows about me that I don’t know. Once I looked at her screen, I totally understood why she said the style describes me. It does. Sometimes.

Mori Kei is Japanese street fashion marked by the customization of outfits with a mix of homemade, vintage, and store bought items. Some people call it “forest style”. I’m not a fairy, I can’t with that.

Random thinking here…

But I do like the terms: granny chic and prairie style. ‘Cause I do love myself some frocks a la Olivia Walton. I have a soft spot for the house dresses Edith Bunker wore. And Louise Jefferson’s beaded tops and flowy caftans take my breath away. But I can’t wear those items every day.

Back to Mori Kei…

I absolutely adore all the flowy layers coupled with the chunky knits. And the funky footwear just makes my sartorial little heart sing all kinds of happy dancing songs. I’m also a fan of the many neutrals of the style but I’ll wear the heck out of some brights too.

So, I think I’m still working on coming up with a term that describes my style. But, gosh, it’s fun and a little scary trying to figure it out.

Is there a specific style of dress you’re drawn to? Do you love a particular decade? How would you describe your style?

Hi, my lovelies! Hope y’all are doing well. I’m OK. This is just one of those days where I think I’m gonna let the pictures speak for themselves. There’s no real rhyme or reason for the outfit, other than it was chilly, I like tights, and my gray boots were begging to be worn. With socks.

PS

Notice the bangs? I wore them for maybe 3 days before they ended up clipped back with bobbie pins. Why do I do that to myself?
