Coffee Talk {Living Outside the Stacks}1. It feels like every week there’s a new story about child sex abuse/murder/kidnapping. This week the news centers around the Boy Scouts and their so~called “Pervert Files”. It looks like they had the same policy as the Catholic Church and Penn State when it came to dealing with child predators… Why is it that organizations prefer to protect their reputations rather than protect the children who’ve been entrusted with their care? My honest~to~goodness~no~holds~barred opinion on this subject is that any and everyone who hurts a child should be put to death. No appeal. No languishing on Death Row for years. Just kill them. And anyone who protects or covers up a child sex case should go to prison. For life.

2. A 10~year~old boy with Down Syndrome survived being lost in the woods by cuddling with some pups for warmth. Seriously, folks, if animals know enough to protect our kids, how come humans have a hard time with that concept? Really, these stories about abused kids are irritating the living daylights out of me. I need to move on.

3. Did you watch the season premier of The Walking Dead? Hands down one of my favorite shows. Especially now that Hell On Wheels is on hiatus. The family and I gathered around the TV and watched it together. Even the dogs joined us.

4. This story about Stella Ehrhart made my heart beat with all sorts of nerdy happiness. Every day since the second grade, Stella has dressed as a different historical figure. How seriously fun is that? It also doesn’t hurt that her parents are theatre folks.

What had you scratchin’ your head this week?
