I’m a daddy’s girl. Always have been. So when my parents divorced, I chose to go live with him while I adjusted to our new reality. My dad and I used to split our time between Washington, D.C. and Spottsylvania, VA. In Virginia, it was just my dad and me. But when we lived in D.C., I was surrounded by my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I loved it. Because I was the only girl, I was incredibly spoiled.

My aunts and uncle used to take me shopping all the time, but that wasn’t the highlight of my time there. What made me happiest was the time that my aunt and I spent at The Washington Dolls’ House & Toy Museum. My aunt and I would spend hours roaming around the museum talking to its founder, Flora Gill Jacobs. Every now and then my aunt would buy a vintage doll from Ms. Jacobs to add to her personal collection.

Eventually, I went to live with my mom, sisters, and stepfather and the museum closed.

My father passed away nine years ago and my aunt sent me a box of his belongings. In the box was this book, The Doll House Mystery by Flora Gill Jacobs and illustrated by Chuck Gruen, that my aunt had autographed for me in 2004. I’ve had this book in my possession all this time and I never noticed the inscription. I don’t know if I was so caught up in my grief that I didn’t pay any attention or what, but how nice to know that after all those years, my aunt thought enough of me and the time we shared to have a book signed for me.

This is an outfit I wore to work yesterday. The weather is changing, the mornings are cool but the afternoons are hot, so being able to remove layers throughout the day is important. This denim blazer has been in my closet for years but I rarely wear it. Boy, have I been missing out.

The structured shape is perfect over my flowy dress. A traditional jacket wouldn’t have created the waist definition that I need in a dress like this. Because the library is so cold, I added leggings to keep my legs warm but their thin, so I don’t overheat when I’m walking around outside. Once it gets colder, I can see adding a lacy scarf, thicker leggings, and a pair of boots to make the outfit more weather appropriate.

I could also wear this dress as a tunic with a pair of flare leg jeans for the ultimate boho look or skinny jeans for a sleek look.

How’s the weather where you are? Is it sweater weather, layering time, or are you still enjoying summer temperatures?
