Matthew 14:13~14

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.  Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

OBSERVATION

Jesus had just learned of the death of John the Baptist and was retreating to privately mourn the loss of His cousin. But the crowds followed Him and, He understanding that their needs were greater than His sorrow, had mercy on them.

APPLICATION

As a mother, I know what it’s like to set aside my need for solitude and a moment to “regroup” to meet the needs of my children, but I don’t know what it’s like to sacrifice my “me time” to meet the needs of complete strangers.  Especially, when you’re talking about mourning the loss of a family member versus meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of strangers.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me the true meaning of compassion and selflessness.  So often, I’m ready to put my needs above those of others (and, sometimes, above the needs of my family) but help me to be less selfish and find the joy in helping those who are in need.  Amen.
