Hi! How’s it going? I’m doing well. The past few weeks have been a blur. I’ve been attending a variety of library related webinars. So very excited to share some of the things I learned with you guys. Seriously, you wouldn’t believe how relevant library work is to the world of blogging…
Anyway, one of the webinars I attended was hosted by Library Wardrobe and the American Library Association where we talked about how personal style affects people’s perceptions of librarians both inside and outside of the profession. Very interesting discussion, no?
One of the questions asked was do we go out of our way to look like anything but a librarian? Crazy cat lady with multiple cardigans and sensible shoes. Is the trend towards hipster chic within the library just an extension of the stereotype?
I think the overwhelming conclusion was that despite the stereotypes, librarians are as diverse as the materials in our libraries and our styles reflect who we are as professionals and as individuals.
I like clothes and I absolutely love shoes, so that’s where I tend to express my creativity and individuality. I don’t think that I get viewed as less professional but it does get me a lot of “You don’t look like a librarian” comments. I’m not a business suit kind of lady and I don’t think that I could thrive in that type of environment.
This got me to thinking about moms and how people have a perception of moms as being dowdy and anything but trendy. Mom jeans, anyone?
So my question to you is do you go out of your way to not look like a mom? Do you notice that people treat you differently based on your fashion choices?
What I Wore Saturday
I wore this hanging out with the hubs on Saturday. I stepped out of my comfort zone and wore my boyfriend jeans cuffed with ankle boots.
What I Wore Sunday
This is what I wore to church on Sunday. I thought the burgundy tights added a little bit of fun to my outfit. I’m trying real hard to wear more colored tights.
What I Wore Monday
This is a typical work outfit for me ~ cardi, flowy top, jeans and boots. I always try to dress up a plain cardi with some sort of jewelry, in this case, it’s 3 flower pins that I crocheted last year. As for the cardi love, it’s a matter of practicality. Libraries are cold, yo.
What I Wore Tuesday
I bought this tunic from some hippie store that I absolutely love but is no longer in business. I almost always pair it with that scarf (made by me).
