I Hope You Have One Just Like You…
I don’t know about y’all but I grew up in one of those households where kids and parents had a “distant” relationship. We knew that our parents loved us but we weren’t what you’d call “friends.” There was respect and a healthy amount of fear(I think my mom had eyes in the back of her head, read here to find out why) but there was no friendship. And I was ok with that. Really, the last thing I wanted was to be my mom’s pal and I’m pretty certain that she felt the same way. That being said, I used to go out of my way to drive my mother…

Day 5: My Favorite Quote
Shoes can affect your personality and your mood. Have you ever noticed how putting on a pair of sneakers makes you feel shlumpy? But putting on a pair of stilettos makes you feel sexy? When I received that postcard from a friend, I was going through a difficult time in my life ~ I wasn’t sure where I was or what I was doing with myself. I honestly felt like I was emotionally and spiritually tapped out and I didn’t know how to pull myself together and then that postcard arrived in the mail… It was just what I needed to get myself in gear. I put on my cutest…

Day 4: My Favorite Books
When I was a little girl, my favorite place in the world was the library. I was a nerdy little girl who was often the object of a lot of teasing and the butt of endless jokes, and the library was the one place the bullies never seemed to enter. The librarian, Mr. Wolford, would push a book cart my way and tell me to shelve. Or he’d slide a stack of books across his desk and say he thought I’d enjoy them. But it was my friend, Lisa, who introduced me to the joys of Danielle Steel when we were in about the 8th or 9th grade… I would…

Day 3: My Favorite Television Shows
Ok, at this point I’ve just totally given up on picking just one of anything… I’m 37 years old, there’s a lot of music playing, book reading, television and movie watching wrapped up in those years. I tried not to list every television show that I’ve ever watched, but I wanted to list shows that have some sort of sentimental or cognitive attachment. So without any further ado, here are my favorite television shows (by year): All in the Family (1971), Good Times (1974), The Jeffersons (1975)~ I just had to lump them all together. The writing on those shows was amazing and the jokes still hold up. They covered everything from abortion…

Day 2: My Favorite Movies (Again, I Can’t Pick Just One)
I’m not a big movie person. I blame it on my ability to become totally distracted by anything shiny. Seriously, I have the attention span of a squirrel. But that being said, there are a few movies that will make me stop whatever it is that I’m doing and become totally engrossed in the story. In order by date (hey, I’m a librarian, I categorize things in my sleep): Imitation of Life (1959) ~ I found out at my dad’s funeral that his favorite song was “Troubles of this World” sung by Mahalia Jackson who sings the song in the movie at the mother’s funeral. My dad didn’t know this…

Day 1: My Favorite Songs (I Can’t Pick Just One)
I love music, unfortunately, I’m not very musically inclined. Well, except when I’m in the car ~ then I turn up the radio and totally rock out to some of my favorite songs. Sometimes, if I’m really “feeling it” I’ll pull over on the side of the road and try to force the kids to sing along with me. I couldn’t pick just one song because there are are so many that mean a lot to me for various reasons, so I decided to break them down into categories and offer two selections from each one. Overachieve, much? Classical Somewhere in Time by Maksim Rhapsody on a Theme of Paginini…

The Banana Incident of 1978
I don’t think it’s any secret that I love monkeys. No, that’s not true. I’m obsessed with monkeys. And lest you think it’s just me, my cousin has informed me that her daughter also has an intense love for monkeys as does another cousin of mine. A family thing? Probably not, the rest of the family is totally repulsed by our monkey love. Anyway, my love for monkeys began when I was quite young and continues to this day. Just ask my loving and patient husband who has to stare at a monkey every time he, ahem, avails himself of the facilities. Seriously, if you want to know the real…

15 Years Ago Today…
I gave birth to Twin A and Twin B, also known as Jazmine and Brandon. But, really, their story begins nine days earlier….. On 11 September 1995, my husband and I showed up at the hospital for a routine OB visit. The baby was due in nine days and, almost overnight it seemed, I had put on about 15 or 20 lbs and my pregnancy gait had shifted into full on waddle. Furthermore, the baby was bouncing all over the place. Don’t babies normally slow down the closer you get to the due date? Anyway, Tony and two~year~old Symone waited in the waiting room while the doctor pulled out the…

Back in the Saddle Again
Tonight I attended the New Adjunct Faculty Orientation at the university where I’ll be teaching. Yay! Can I tell you how excited I am to be back in the saddle classroom again? I truly enjoy teaching and interacting with students, I think I learn just as much in the process as they do. For me, learning is a collaborative experience between the students and the instructor. If I stand in front of the students droning on and on about whatever, they learn absolutely nothing but when the students are engaged and challenged, oh my gosh, you can see the wheels turning. Seriously, nothing is better than hearing a student say “You…
