Where Bloggers Live: My Favorite Rainy Day Activities
Hey, y’all, hey! How are ya? NGL, I’m bouncing between absolute rage at the state of this country and childlike wonder at the Artemis II space mission. For the past few days, this mission has connected me to my dad in a way that few things have. My dad was a Star Trek fanatic {he went to the conventions, cos-played before it was a thing, and had a massive collection of ships and miniatures}. To say my dad would have been obsessed with this mission is putting it lightly. I know he would’ve been stalking the NASA website for collectibles.
What I didn’t realize is how much my Gen X heart needed to see and feel all the “Moon Joy” that came with this mission. For the first time in forever, I felt connected to something greater than anger and sadness, it was true awe. The astronauts: Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hanson brought my heart so much joy. Watching them act like all of us if we were launched into space was just fun. They floated, sent back heart hands, the guys wrestled, Christina’s curls amazed, etc. It was simply spectacular.
Y’all, these astronauts took photography classes so that they could capture the best images for us here on Earth. You can see images from the entire mission by visiting NASA, or you can check out the Artemis II Lunar Flyby Gallery if you just want to see the moon images. You know what, just look at all the pictures. THEY ARE PERFECT and will leave you gasping for air. Anyway, I spent the week watching, sharing, and creating a space nerd community on Threads. And, last night, The Hubs and I watched as the crew came back to us — it was magical. I didn’t realize how nervous I was for them until I saw Victor Glover’s wide smile as the camera focused on his face. That was when I knew that they were all OK.
The way we all collectively fell in love with the crew, the entire NASA team, and “Rise,” the Artemis II Moon mascot, that was designed by 8-year-old Lucas Ye. Lucas’s zero degree indicator design was selected from thousands of submissions from over 50 countries. How awesome is that?!
THE PROMPT: My Favorite Rainy Day Things
My rainy day activities really depends upon the season and where I happen to be at the time. That being said, I DO NOT LIKE RAINY DAYS WHEN IT’S COLD. Just snow already. There are few things worse than being cold and wet. Oh, and I don’t like that sticky misty rain either. That’s just gross. But a nice little rain storm when I’m at work? I love it. The library is surrounded by windows and, from my office, I can watch as the clouds roll in and the skies darken, it’s just amazing. Especially when there’s that weird little divide in the sky where it’s dark on one side and light and sunny on the other. During those times, I’ll go and stand by the window for a few minutes and just watch the rain.
When I’m home, I like to sit in my favorite cozy chair with a cup of coffee and the remote. I’ll put the TV on an old show {The Golden Girls, The Waltons, The Cosby Show, etc.} and scroll Threads or Instagram. There’s something comforting about the sound of rain and familiar conversations, while doom scrolling. It doesn’t make any sense at all, but that’s what I do. Sometimes, when they’re scared, Bleu and Lola will join me on the sofa. I love their sweet little puppy snuggles.
