Love {Advent Bible Study}

by Daenel

The focus of this week’s Advent study is LOVE. Love means to have a strong affection for anther arising out of kinship or personal ties. It also means to have an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another.

Love ~ Advent Bible Study {Living Outside the Stacks}

SCRIPTURE

1 John 4:7 {KJV}

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

OBSERVATION

When I first looked up “Love” in the Webster’s Dictionary, the first entry was for maternal love, the second for romantic love and a bit further down, the love God has for mankind. This struck me as wrong. I know the dictionary isn’t a religious book but the first act of love ever demonstrated was when God sent His son to die for us {John 3:16, John 15:13).

God’s love is sacrificial, benevolent and unwarranted, this is how our love for one another should be.

APPLICATION

This week, we’re challenged to demonstrate our love for one another through random acts of kindness. I love this. For the last week, we’ve had a mitten tree at work for collecting articles of clothing such as gloves, hats and scarves for those in need. So I decided to crochet scarves to go on the tree. To me, nothing says love more than something handmade. And while, I may not ever meet the person who gets one of my scarves, I’ll know that somewhere out there, someone is keeping warm with God’s love through my hands.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the example that you gave us of perfect love. Thank you for giving us the greatest gift of all, eternal life through your son, Jesus Christ. I ask that on this week, you help me to find ways to demonstrate your love to anyone who crosses my path. Let them see you in me. And, Lord, bless each person who receives something from the mitten tree. Keep them strong and healthy. Reveal your love to them.

Amen

ABOUT THE STUDY

This month, I will be participating in the Advent Study, Keeping Our Hearts Focused on Jesus, hosted by the ladies at Good Morning Girls. Good Morning Girls are a group of Christian women who email, Facebook, Twitter and text message each other to keep them accountable for their quiet times. You can even catch them on Instagram, just follow the hashtag #goodmorninggirls.

Having quiet time in the Word is a great way to begin or end the day. It gives you time to focus on God and His will for your life as well as to renew and refresh your strength. I encourage you to take a few minutes out of your day and spend some time just reading and thinking about the Lord.

Hope {Advent Bible Study}

by Daenel

The focus of this week’s Advent study is HOPE. Hope means to anticipate or expect with confidence.

Advent Bible Study {Living Outside the Stacks}

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 33:15

In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.

OBSERVATION

God promises His people that after their captivity has ended a righteous descendant from King David’s line will be born. The fulfillment of this promise is the birth of Jesus Christ, who is just and righteous.

APPLICATION

When I read this passage, I think of a new bud on a tree branch and all the promise that it holds. It represents new beginnings, a fresh start… When we trust in Jesus, we are reborn and our lives begin anew.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gifts of love, mercy and new beginnings given through the birth, death and resurrection of your son. There are no words to express the joy and hope that I have in knowing that I have been made brand new. And I ask that you touch the hearts of my friends, so they may know and accept you into their lives.

Amen.

Hope Advent Bible Study {Living Outside the Stacks}

SCRIPTURE

John 1:12 {KJV}

But as many as received him, to them gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

OBSERVATION

There are many who reject Jesus and His claims, but there are also many who believe His claims. And it is those who believe in Him, who will inherit the kingdom of God as His children.

APPLICATION

The gift of life is free to those who simply choose to accept that God in His mercy and grace looked down upon this world in all of its nastiness and offered up His son as the perfect sacrifice.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending your son, even though His own people rejected Him, thank you for giving me the opportunity to accept Him. Thank you for the gift of salvation. I ask that you continue to lead me in your truth and help me to walk faithfully in your word.

Amen.

Preparing for Christmas {Advent Bible Study}

by Daenel

Last week, I briefly talked about how God has been dealing with me about the ways I’ve been using social media for His glory. Specifically, the fact that I haven’t been. I’ve been using my spaces on the web to talk about style, food, photography and all sorts of other things… There’s nothing wrong with that, I believe that God wants us to have fun, but I don’t want that to be all there is to me. I firmly believe that I’m living at this time and place for a reason. God has a purpose for me.

So I know it was nothing but God that lead me to an eBook called Reach: How to Use Your Social Media Influence for the Glory of God by @laurakrokos and @angipratt. The book challenged me to look at how I’m using Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter to spread the message of God’s redeeming love. the book also made me examine the reasons why I had stopped focusing on my faith:

  • Fear of losing readers who don’t share my beliefs
  • Feelings of unworthiness

While my fears are very real, ultimately, my fear of disappointing God is greater. No matter what I do, I can’t earn God’s grace, it was a gift freely given because of His mercy (Titus 3:5). Furthermore, the Word tells me that His word will not return void (Isaiah 55:11). So even though not everyone will accept Christ, there will be some who will have their hearts pricked. And, last, but not least, we are commanded to go out and share the message of Jesus’s birth, death and resurrection (Mark 16:15).

I don’t want to waste the opportunity that I’ve been given.

And I can think of no better way to share the message of God’s love than to start at the beginning with the birth of my lord and savior, Jesus Christ. So tomorrow I will begin two Advent studies! I’ve never celebrated Advent before and probably wouldn’t have even thought about it had my friend, Ellen from Miss Stewart AKA Mrs. Seaman, not invited me to celebrate with her and her friends on Facebook.

In fact, I’m so new to the concept of Advent that I had to look it up. This research led me to Good Morning Girls and a cute little video that explains that Advent is basically preparing your heart for the arrival of a very special guest, Jesus Christ. You can watch the video by clicking here. I’d also been seeing #goodmorninggirls on Instagram and Twitter for the longest time, so I’m doubly glad to finally know what it stands for

Anyway, I look forward to sharing the message of Jesus Christ with you and I pray that you find comfort, joy and peace in the knowledge that Jesus was born, crucified and resurrected for you and for me.

SOAP: We Were Created in His Image {#B90Days}

by Daenel

The SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

OBSERVATION

Throughout the whole story of creation, God speaks things into existence, he says “Let there be light” and there is light (Genesis 1:14) and he tells the land to produce living creatures according to its kind (Genesis 1:24) but when it comes to man, he takes the time to form man out of the dust of the earth. But he doesn’t just throw together stuff to make man, he said “Let us make man after our own image” (Genesis 1:26), which means that we are walking, talking, flesh and bone representations of God.

APPLICATION

Have you ever looked in the mirror and not liked what you see? Your hair’s too curly or your nose is too flat or your thighs have more jiggle than you want… You pick yourself a part, finding flaws at every turn… Have you ever stopped to think that you are dishonoring God when you tear yourself down?

He says that we were made in his image, Psalm 139:14 (NIV) says “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” If you believe even one portion of the Bible to be true, then you have to believe that you are wonderfully and fearfully made, so stop tearing yourself down.

When you feel yourself thinking negative thoughts, look at yourself in the mirror and know that you were created by the hand of God, in his image!

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for creating me in your image. Thank you for the things about me that are unique, because these are the things that make me beautiful. And, Lord, as I go through my day and self doubt starts to creep in, help me to remember that I am your creation, beautifully, wonderfully and fearfully made. Amen.

WHAT IS BIBLE IN 90 DAYS?

Bible in 90 Days or #B90Days is a Bible reading plan hosted by Amy at Mom’s Toolbox. It provides an opportunity for a community of women to support each other as they read through the Bible in 90 days.

This session of #B90Days runs from 20 August thru 17 November and as a mentor (Group 34, holla) , my job will be to encourage readers through prayer, words of support on Twitter and via our accountability group. I’ll also be posting words of encouragement here on my blog, so stay tuned for those.

There’ll be weekly Twitter parties, using the hashtag #B90Days, so make sure you follow @MomsToolbox. You can also follow along and keep up with the daily reading plans by liking Mom’s Toolbox on Facebook.

WHAT IS SOAP?

Although this is a Bible reading plan and not a Bible study per se, Amy does recommend that participants use SOAP for guidance through the 90 day reading session as it helps with the understanding and application of the scriptures to our daily lives.

SOAP is an acrostic that stands for:

Scripture
Observation
Application
Prayer

For more information about SOAP, read Amy’s post What is SOAP?

If you’re joining in, please leave a comment below so I can pray for you and encourage you through this process.

Marriage {Bible Reading Plan Day 3}

by Daenel

Wedding RingsSCRIPTURE

I Peter 3:1 {NIV}

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if an of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.

OBSERVATION

There are two key points for me here:

  1. “…submit yourselves to you own husbands…” ~ this does not mean that wives are lesser than or subservient to their husbands nor does this mean that a husband can walk all over his wife {I Peter 3:7}; this means that as the head of the household, the husband is the final authority and wives are to yield themselves to that authority {if you’ve made a wise choice in a partner, this shouldn’t be an issue}, wives are also supposed to be respectful of their husbands
  2. “…they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives…” ~ an unsaved husband should be able to look at his wife and be won over by her actions; as the homemaker, her greatest testimony for the love and redeeming grace of God is her attitude towards her husband and her family

APPLICATION

I’m naturally a strong willed person. Even as a little girl, my first inclination was to always do the opposite of whatever my parents told me to do. Over the years, I’ve learned to reign in that personality trait. A little bit. After getting married, the hardest thing for me to do was to not question every single decision my husband made. And by question, I mean, demand that he do things my way because, of course, my way is the right way. As the years have passed, I’m happy that he ultimately showed me that his decisions were the right way to go. I don’t have issues with submitting to my husband anymore because I’ve learned that he is guided by wisdom from God and love for our family.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving my husband the wisdom to lead our family. Thank you for putting me in a position to recognize that wisdom. Continue to grant me the grace and wisdom that I need to be submissive to my husband. Amen.

Marriage {Bible Reading Plan Day 2}

by Daenel

Marriage {Bible Reading Plan Day 2}SCRIPTURE

Ecclesiastes 9:9 {NIV}

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun~ all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labour under the sun.

OBSERVATION

There is one key point for me:

  1. “Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love…” ~ a husband is to find peace and contentment with his wife because he loves her and he chose to be with her

APPLICATION

There are so many different diversions out there e.g. video games, movies, etc. that it’s easy to start seeking peace, love and happiness from those things but God commands us to enjoy life with our spouses. He established marriage in the beginning so that man would not be alone {Genesis 2:18~24}, so that he would have a partner to comfort him. Life is hard and can become routine {note the repeated use of the word “meaningless in the scripture} so you have to make sure you choose your partner wisely.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, thank you for my husband. Thank you for putting us on the path that we are now on, where we can entertain each other and make each other laugh. Thank you for helping us to find the joy in our marriage. Amen.

Marriage {Bible Reading Plan Day 1}

by Daenel

Marriage {Bible Reading Plan Day 1}SCRIPTURE

Genesis 2:18 {NIV}

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

OBSERVATION

Two things stick out for me from this scripture:

  1. “…It is not good that the man should be alone;” ~ God knew that man needed someone like himself to talk to and interact with so that he would not be lonely
  2. “I will make him an help meet for him.” ~ woman was made to be man’s partner and helper; her God ordained role was to help her husband by meeting his needs

APPLICATION

My husband always says that his primary duty at work is to make his boss’s job easier. Meaning his responsibility is to take care of the detail work so that his boss can keep an eye on the big picture.  He also says if he isn’t making his boss’s job easier then he should be fired. Crazy sense of responsibility, right? This should also be the primary role of the wife ~ to make her husband’s life easier so he can focus on the big stuff.

I know I’m guilty of adding stress to my husband by bogging him down with the gory details of life. There have been times when I’ve dropped the ball on things that he’s asked me to take care of either because I forgot or because I simply didn’t want to handle it. Not cool. As a “help meet” to my husband, my responsibility is to keep the house running, make sure the kids have everything they need, essentially to make his home life easier so that he can take care of his work life and provide for us.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, thank you for recognizing that we’re not meant to be alone. Thank you for placing my husband in my life and for trusting me with my children. Help me to meet all of their needs and to be the wife and mother that you have called me to be. Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan Day 5)

by Daenel

Tree TrunkSCRIPTURE

Titus 3:5 {NIV}

he saved us, not because of  righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

OBSERVATION

Two key points for me are:

  1. “he saved us not because of the righteous things we had done, but because f his mercy”:  Romans 3:23 {NIV} says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” so it wasn’t our works or the goodness in our hearts that caused God to save us, it was His mercy. Mercy can be defined as compassion that’s shown towards an offender {sinner} or the offering of divine favor, so God has shown divine favor on us sinners and given us the opportunity to be renewed
  2. “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit”: “rebirth” and “renewal” implies that we are new again and it is through the cleansing of the Holy Spirit that we are made so

APPLICATION

One of my biggest faults is my temper. I have to constantly remind myself to “be angry and sin not” {Ephesians 4:26}. I’ve gotten better about not letting the sun go down on my anger but, let me tell ya, there are times when it’s truly a struggle. That’s when I have to think back over my life and all of the mean and nasty things that I’ve done and/or said to people and remember that God looked at all that, read the thoughts passing through my head, saw the darkness in my heart and said “I love Daenel. I’m going to have to do something to help her out. Jesus, I need you to go down there, make some friends, preach for a little while and then die. But it won’t be a quick and easy death. See, I’m gonna need you to get betrayed by one of your friends, lied on, beat up and spit on. Wait, there’s more. You’re gonna have to get nailed to a cross, pierced in the side with a sword and then die a slow and agonizingly painful death… But, and this is the important part, I’m going to need you rise up in 3 days!”

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the gifts of your love and mercy that were shown to me even before I came to be. Thank you for sending your son as the ultimate sacrifice for my sins. Please help me to show the same grace, mercy, love and kindness to those who are with me. Help me to forgive even when it hurts. Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan Day 4}

by Daenel
Bollinger Mill Historic Site

To see more pictures from our adventure, click here

SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 29:11 {NIV}

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

OBSERVATION

From the beginning, God has had plans for us. He created us, therefore He knows our strengths and our weaknesses, He knows what we can and cannot do. And with this knowledge, His plan for us is that we use our talents to be happy, healthy and prosperous in Him.

APPLICATION

I have often said that I have the navigational skills of a monkey in a hurricane. Case in point, a few weeks back, my daughter and I were driving home from running so errands and, on a whim, we decided to check out the Bollinger Mill Historic Site (the sign said it was about 13 miles up the road). We had no idea what the Bollinger Mill Historic Site was but neither of us was really ready to go home so

Midway through the drive, I started to panic because it was at that point that we realized we have driven more than 13 miles and that we were in the middle of nowhere. Cows and farmland as far as the eye could see. I kid you not, it was about 45 minutes and twenty~something miles later that we arrived at our destination.

I hid my panic from my daughter as we talked and laughed and took pictures along the way. We sung songs, teased each other and had a wonderful afternoon. In my getting lost, God was able to allow me to bond with my daughter. You see, not all the time is “prosperity” about wealth, sometimes it’s about creating memories, spending time with loved ones and just laughing.

I needed that moment with my daughter. I had been feeling a little bit lost and out of sorts. Friendless. And God knew that I needed someone to perk me up. He took what could have been an anxiety provoking moment for me and turned it into something beautiful.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, thank You for the plans that You have for my life. Thank You for using my weaknesses to show Your strength. Thank you for knowing what I need, when I need it. Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan Day 3}

by Daenel

Tree BranchSCRIPTURE

Psalm 136:1 {NIV}

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.

OBSERVATION

We are to give thanks to the Lord for all of His blessings and for His never ending love.

APPLICATION

The other day as I was leaving the post office, I saw a woman trying to balance a giant box and open the door at the same time so I quickly moved to the side, opened the door and held it for her and she brushed past me without so much as a nod. I stood there a minute, door still wide open… Seriously, she couldn’t say “thank you”? What has happened to common courtesy?

As I read today’s verse, I wondered how many times I’ve left God just standing there with the door open? How many times have I failed to acknowledge the many gifts He has given to me?

PRAYER

Father, I just want to thank you for all that you’ve done for me. I want to thank you for my life, my health and my strength. I want to thank you for the family and friends that you’ve given to me. I want to thank you for the daily reminders of your enduring love.  Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan Day 2}

by Daenel

ShoesSCRIPTURE

Deuteronomy 7:6 {ESV}

“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the people who are on the face of the earth.”

OBSERVATION

Three things stood out for me in this verse:

  1. “…you are a people holy to the LORD…”: “holy” means to be set apart for a religious purpose and as such, they are to be living according to a strict or highly moral religious or spiritual system
  2. “…God has chosen you…”: they were specifically chosen because they were wanted, not because there weren’t any other available options or they were the last group of people left
  3. “…for his treasured possession…”: as a treasured possession, they have value (both sentimental and monetary ~ Jesus was the ransom that was paid, John 3:16) and will be cared for

APPLICATION

When I was in school, the one game I truly hated playing was Dodgeball. I was always the last person selected. I was the slowest runner. The least coordinated. The easiest target. Even the window licker and the nose picker were selected before me. And I was always the first one to get slammed in the back by that hard red ball. I’d sit there on the bleachers, tears stinging my eyes, just wishing for once that I could be first.

In 1 John 4:19, we are told that God loved us first, which means that He chose us before we chose Him. Do you remember how the kids who were picked first on a team would puff up their chests and fist bump each other because they knew they were big stuff? Well, that’s how we need to be as children of God. We need to puff up our chests and let everyone know that we are on the winning team.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for choosing me to be on your team. I want to thank you for seeing the value in me, even when I didn’t see it in myself. I know there have been times when I haven’t lived according to your word, when I haven’t upheld your spiritual and moral code, but I’m asking that you forgive me and guide my footsteps so that I can be an example to others. Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan Day 1}

by Daenel

Dani ReflectionSCRIPTURE

Genesis 1:26 {ESV}

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on earth.”

OBSERVATION

There are three things that stood out for me in this verse:

  1. “…let us make man…”: indication of the trinity of God; God uses the plural to indicate that He is more than one
  2. “…in our image, after our likeness…”: we are the physical and spiritual image of God, with the ability to think and reason; we were created morally sound and sinless (it wasn’t until Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit that God cursed man by saying that he was born into sin – Genesis 3:16~19)
  3. “…let them have dominion over the fish of the sea…”: As God’s ultimate creation, man was given the authority to rule over God’s other creations and act as a caretaker of all that God had created

APPLICATION

The other day, I wrote about how I was putting together my resume and I was so impressed by the woman that I was reading about on paper that it almost felt like I was reading about someone else.  I was having a hard time reconciling the image of who I used to be with the person that I’ve become. I was having a big pity party.  I’ve been out of work for 6 months and I’m watching my friends move forward in their careers and I’m just here. Floundering, it feels like.

This verse reminds me that I’m more than my career (or lack thereof). I am made in the image of God and I need to stop with the self doubt and the negativity. When I put myself down, I’m putting down the One who made me, the One in who’s image I was created.

PRAYER

I want to thank You, Lord, for creating me in Your image, for giving me reason, power and authority. I want to thank You for showing me in Your word that I have value. And I ask that You help me to be the woman that You created me to be so that I will always reflect the Christ who is living in me. Amen.

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan}

by Daenel

My sisters and I used to joke that our first stop on the way home from the hospital was church. And from that moment on, we spent every waking moment in church…

Why Does God Love Me? {Bible Reading Plan}

For most of my life, I’ve always felt God’s presence around me. Even when I was running ahead of Him, I knew He was there, ready to pick me up when I stumbled. So why am I sitting here at 1 something in the morning trying to figure out where it’s all gone? I know I haven’t lost my faith, but I’ve lost something and I need to find it.

I want that happiness and joy that I see bubbling up in others. I want that peace that comes from knowing Him as my comforter and friend. I want to know what made Him look at me and think She’s worth dying for

To answer that question and the many others that have been floating around in my head, I’ll be reading “Why Does God Love Me?“, a five day Bible plan offered by YouVersion. I’ll be using the SOAP method of discovery that I learned from Amy at Mom’s Toolbox to share what I’ve learned with you.

I invite you to join me in this plan and share your insights in the comments section.

Bible in 90 Days: Day 16 SOAP

by Daenel

SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Joshua 1:7 (NIV)

Be strong and very courageous.  Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the  right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

OBSERVATION

God was installing Joshua as the official leader of the people of Israel and endowing him with the same privileges and honor that had belonged to Moses.  He promised Joshua that he would have the same success and respect among the people as Moses did as long as he observed the laws and let nothing move him to either the left or the right.

APPLICATION

God has laid out specific guidelines for us to follow and all He asks is that we remain true to His word and He will remain true to us.  But sometimes, we tend to take matters into our own hands and usurp the will of God and then wonder why we have a big old mess on our hands.  If we keep His commandments and seek His guidance in all things, we will be successful.  That doesn’t mean that we’re going to be the next billionaire or that we won’t have troubles, it means that things will be a lot less hectic and disorganized (if we’ve learned nothing else from our readings, we’ve learned that God is a God of order and stability).

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for everything that you’ve done for me.  Thank you for your commandments and your guidance, help me to walk in your ways that I may find success and order in my life.  When I get distracted by shiny things to my left and sparkly things to my right, Lord, help me to refocus my attention on the glory that is before me.  In your name, amen.

Bible in 90 Days: Day 7 SOAP

by Daenel

SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Exodus 36:4~5 (NIV)

4 So all the skilled workers who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left what they were doing

5 and said to Moses, “These people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the lord commanded to be done.”

OBSERVATION

Moses asked the Israelites to bring, according to their ability, whatever materials they had so that Bezalel and Oholiab and the other skilled workers could construct the sanctuary according to the God’s commandment.  Rather than just bringing the minimal amount or enough to say they had given, the people gave so much that the workers actually complained and Moses had to tell them to hold up.

APPLICATION

Sometimes in this life, we’re asked to give or to do something and we complete the act just enough to say it was done but not to the point where the giving is overflowing.  Not all acts of giving are directly commanded by God but each act of giving should be done as if it is being done for His glory ~ even something as mundane as ironing a shirt for your husband.  I say that because I absolutely hate to iron and that’s probably the one thing the hubs consistently asks me to do and I need to be better about doing it.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for providing me with an example of love and action overflowing.  Thank you for helping me to realize that even the smallest acts should be done for your glory and honor.  Help me to remember the example of the Israelites when I’m working both inside and outside of the home.  In your name, I pray, Amen.

Blogging Through The Gospels: Mark 3:35

by Daenel

SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Mark 3:35

Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.

OBSERVATION

Jesus is stating that through our faith in Him, everyone who follows Him and does as the Word of God instructs is His family and also ours by virtue of us being children of God.

APPLICATION

Sometimes when I’m having a little pity party, I complain to the hubs that I’m lonely because I don’t any friends or family around.  And he points out all the connections I’ve made through my blog, Facebook and Twitter and how supportive many of my online friends and family have been when I’ve needed them.  This verse is a reminder that if I walk in the Word and carry myself as God would have me, then I am a child of God and sister of Christ and all of those who follow Him.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for including me in your family.   Lord, you know I’ve always wished for a large family and sometimes I forget that I do have that family ~ the people that I’ve met through the Bible in 90 Days Program, Blogging Through The Gospels and the myriad of other ways that we’ve managed to connect.  Thank you for giving me so many brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers in Christ.  Amen.

Blogging Through The Gospels: Matthew 14

by Daenel

SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Matthew 14:13~14

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.  Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

OBSERVATION

Jesus had just learned of the death of John the Baptist and was retreating to privately mourn the loss of His cousin. But the crowds followed Him and, He understanding that their needs were greater than His sorrow, had mercy on them.

APPLICATION

As a mother, I know what it’s like to set aside my need for solitude and a moment to “regroup” to meet the needs of my children, but I don’t know what it’s like to sacrifice my “me time” to meet the needs of complete strangers.  Especially, when you’re talking about mourning the loss of a family member versus meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of strangers.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me the true meaning of compassion and selflessness.  So often, I’m ready to put my needs above those of others (and, sometimes, above the needs of my family) but help me to be less selfish and find the joy in helping those who are in need.  Amen.

Blogging Through The Gospels: Matthew 12

by Daenel

SOAP RingSCRIPTURE

Matthew 12:36~37

36 I tell you, on the day of judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak,

37 for  by your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned.

OBSERVATION

How many times have we spoken without thinking?  Shared a rumor without knowing the full truth?  Spoken about a celebrity based on a blurb from a news story?  These are all careless words that do nothing but bring harm and bad feelings.  Someday God is going to require that we answer for each word spoken…

APPLICATION

I know I’m guilty of idle gossip and speaking out of anger ~ using words to hurt people and put them down, I want to be better than that.  I don’t want to stand before Him and have to try to justify those words.  There is no justification.  I want my words to bring comfort, understanding, love and peace.  I want my conversation to be one that I would not be ashamed to have in front of Him.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for showing me Your love and mercy.  Thank You for opening my heart to You and for allowing me to know Your truth.  Please guide and protect my words and my heart so that I won’t sin against You.  Help me to keep silent when my words are full of anger and hurt, and help me to speak when I can bring peace and understanding through You.  Amen.
