ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART

Welcome to Style Imitating Art.Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Terri {Meadow Tree Style}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

THE CURATOR

I chose this week’s inspiration piece.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

Jazz Stories: Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow #1: Somebody Stole My Broken Heart by Faith Ringgold.

 Many years ago, I used to teach American history and one of my favorite creative eras to discuss was the Harlem Renaissance. Most of my students had never heard of it, so each time I taught it, we all discovered new things.

If a class had a soundtrack, Jazz would be it for that time. The music encompassed so much emotion: love, heartbreak, longing, acceptance…

As with Jazz, the outfit options are limitless. You can focus on color, texture, material type, or even costume… I can’t wait to see your selection.

SUBMISSIONS

Kezzie {kezzie ag}

Kezzi gave us a three-fer and I’m here for it. She even nailed the pose! I cannot pick a favorite out of the set, but that guitar patterned dress with the tee straps are making my heart sing!

Marsha {marsha in the middle}

Marsha is a first-time joiner and I’m so excited to see her interpretation. Between the pattern play and the textures, there is so much to love about this outfit.

Mike {postcard purposes}

Mike is a late submission, but we’re always happy to have him join us. While he opted for the darker colors from the inspiration image, if you visit his blog, you’ll see the brighter colors. He did a great as always.

Shelbee {shelbee on the edge}

Shelbee’s outfit is just fun. Look at that skirt! The movement reminds me of the movement in the inspiration piece. And the guitar is a fun accessory.

Suzy {the grey brunette}

And how cute is Suzy’s outfit? I love love love the way she pairs trainers with dresses. I keep making a mental note to try something similar — I may need to just put a reminder in my phone. The colors are spot on for the inspiration piece.

MY COHOSTS

Salazar {14 shades of grey}

I always say Salazar has the best brooch collection. The colors in her outfit are perfect. I like that she chose a yellow skirt with movement too. So much to love.

Terri {meadowtree style}

You guys. Terri made those pants. Can we all just stop and admire her talent? Now let’s take in both outfits. Love love love.

MY OUTFIT

For my outfit, I chose to go with not only color, but texture and pattern as well. I’m not normally a dress girl, but this one is giving me so much life that I think I’m going to have to pick up a couple of more pieces. Not only do I like the color and the feel, but I like the shape and love the deep pockets. You can see more of my In the Glow Maxi Dress by Kantha Bae here.
