Navy Eyelet Top with Jeans and Navy Mary Janes {living outside the stacks} Style Imitating Art

Hello! How are you doing? All is well here. Christmas break has officially come to an end for us — my daughters went back to college on Sunday, so now it’s time for us to regain some sense of normalcy. I won’t lie, I already miss them. In fact, I think I sent them “I miss you” emojis about 5 minutes after they got on the plane. Even Squeekerz seems to be missing them…

Anyway, welcome to another round of Style Imitating Art. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. My main tip for participating is not to just look at the colors but look at the textures, think about complimentary colors, etc. In other words, you don’t have to be literal your interpretation.

INSPIRATION ART WORK

Still Life with Irises by Vincent van Gogh

Still Life with Irises, 1890 – Vincent van Gogh

You can read more about the painting here.

THE CURATOR

This week’s inspiration piece was curated by Salazar from 14 Shades of Grey. Salazar  selected this image because they’ve been experiencing a lot of gray days and she wanted something to brighten it up. Same here. Nothing but rain for almost a week, but yesterday and today? Absolutely beautiful.

I see so many possibilities in this image: greens, bolds, blues, blacks, and browns. And then there are the textures.

What do you think you’ll wear? I can’t wait to see!

MY LOOK

I know it’s winter and eyelet generally isn’t a winter fabric, but I think the color makes it a little more season appropriate. I’ve also layered a flesh colored tank under the top for added warmth {not that it was particularly cold on this day, in fact it was almost 70 degrees the day I took these photos}.

The earrings and the necklace are natural shades that reflect the browns in the painting.

How cute are these navy Mary Jane’s? They’re so incredibly comfortable. And versatile. I can wear them with jeans and dresses, which makes them perfect for work.

Typically, I’d wear something like this on a Friday {which is a casual dress day for us}, but if I wanted to wear it on a regular work day, I’d swap out the jeans for a pair of brown plaid slacks and add a yellow cardigan for a pop of color.
