Shopping Cart and Sunlight

Sometimes I get so caught up in the big picture that I miss the little things. For example, I took this picture using Instagram because I thought the light coming off the setting sun was just beautiful. In fact, I was so awestruck by the evening sky that I didn’t even notice the lone shopping cart until after I had posted the picture. And it made me think, how many times have I been so involved in the “big” things of life that I forget to give thanks for the “little” things?

Life has no guarantees, in fact, Psalm 103:15~16 says: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.” {NIV} There are so many people who woke up in happiness and are going to bed in sorrow because they’ve lost someone due to accident, tragedy or illness. Either way that person is gone and the time to say “I love you” will never be again.

If you read 1 Thessalonians 5:16~18, we are told to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” {NIV}

Right now I need to give thanks to God for the “small” moments in life:

  • the sound of my children’s laughter as they tease each other
  • the hubs’ contented smile as he sits in his favorite chair and reads a book
  • mom and dad who offer emotional and spiritual support
  • my brothers and sisters, by blood and by choice, who make me laugh
  • my church family who push me out of my comfort zone on a weekly basis
  • our dog who greets me each and every day as if he hasn’t seen me in years
  • the blessings that are too numerous to count

Downstairs, there’s a sign on my wall that says “It’s the small moments that make our lives big.”

What do you take for granted? Are there little things that you miss because you’re grabbing at the big stuff?
