Welcome to Style Imitating Art. You guys, I just completed my second photo shoot on Saturday and I cannot wait to show you the pictures. I was so incredibly nervous. I came thisclose to calling and asking her to find someone else to do it. Shooting for people is unnerving because they have expectations. When I shoot for the school, I’m catching people in action, there’s no posing… I’m in my bubble and I don’t have to worry about directing and posing. I can focus on lighting and angles, no pressure. But I think I nailed it. Or, at least, she was happy with the initial images so that makes me incredibly happy.
ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Terri {Meadow Tree Style}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.
THE CURATOR
This week’s image was selected by me. I chose it because I was thinking about my grandma and her love of coffee {which I inherited}.
My Grandma
I chose it because I was thinking about my grandma and her love of coffee {which I inherited}. She used to come home from work, turn on the percolator, light a cigarette, and wait for Dynasty to come on… Then she, my aunt, and I would watch TV and gasp at the dramatics on the screen. Our favorite character was “Dominique Devereaux,” who was played by the incomparable Ms. Diahann Carroll. When she joined Dynasty, my grandma and aunt were beyond excited. I remember them excitedly chattering over the previews and planning waaaay in advance for our viewing. Back then, I didn’t understand the significance of Ms. Carroll’s appearance on night time drama or what it meant to Grandma and Aunt Sissy, now I do.

SUBMISSIONS
Charlotte {jodie’s touch of style}
So many shades of blue! The textures, the patterns, and the shapes. Ms. Charlotte’s the perfect reflection of the inspiration piece.
Jodie {jodie’s touch of style}
Everything about Jodie’s outfit is perfect from the floaty sweater to the distressed jeggings. Adore it.
Lesley {jodie’s touch of style}
When I separated from the Army, I swore off camo but seeing it on Lesley only confirms my belief that it’s the perfect neutral.
Nancy {jodie’s touch of style}
Nancy’s dress is stunning. Absolutely stunning – the fit, the color, everything.
Jodie, thank you for all of the submissions. You all nailed the inspiration piece.
Kezzie {kezzie ag}
Kezzie always has the most fun outfits. I think it’s perfect and the brogues add the perfect amount of funkiness, don’t you think?
Mike {postcard purposes}
You guys, Mike set up a whole scene and I think it’s wonderful. He wrote that he: “…matched this one pretty well, not just in terms of the outfit, but the props and even the background. I even managed to mimic the woman’s serious look on her face.”
Shelbee {shelbee on the edge}
When I saw Shelbee’s dress, I literally squealed. I’ve been looking for a chambray dress similar to this one for.ever. Shelbee said that she found this one while thrifting so she couldn’t tell me exactly where it originally came from, but at least I now have hope.
Suzy {the grey brunette}
Suzy is joining us for the first time and I’m so thrilled! She’s my style sister {or so I like to think}. She has this really cool retro vibe to her that makes me want to raid her closet. Anyway, I’m totally digging the denim on denim look with the polka dot tie. So incredibly fabulous and perfect for this week’s inspiration piece.
MY COHOSTS
Salazar {14 shades of grey}
Salazar did “… a loose interpretation, but I think the pattern on my sweater mimics the texture of the woman’s dress and the floral pattern behind her quite well (there’s also a hint of silvery gray for the coffee pot), while my trousers and my boots are to reflect the colors and textures of the wall and the table.”
I think it’s perfect! The browns make me think not only of the table but of actual coffee. With cream. And the blue sweater, of course, mimics the dress while the white accents make me think of the flowers in the background.
Terri {meadow tree style}
Terri wrote that her “…outfit and surroundings for this SIA were influenced by Cèzanne’s use of blue for the woman’s ensemble, the bright contrasting tablecloth, the flower motif, and of course coffee.”
First of all, I love that Terri created a whole scenario for this week’s SIA. How fun and creative! As for her outfit, as always, it’s the shoes that captured my attention. I love a strappy shoe and those are perfect with the skinny jeans and that fringe top. I’m also eyeing Terri’s jewelry which has shades of green and cream in them, which make me think of the flowers in the background of the painting.
MY OUTFIT
Earrings – Nickel and Suede | Blazer – Similar | Tunic – Similar | Lace Extender – Similar | Bracelets – Three Bird Nest | Spanx Faux Leather Leggings – Similar, Similar | Musse and Cloud Boots – Exact, Similar
These faux leather leggings have been in my closet for well over a year and I think I’ve worn them twice. It’s a shame because I love faux leather, especially faux leather leggings. I think it’s the color that throws me off. They’re a deep wine color. Which in my mind is a neutral, but I have a hard time remembering that. The funny part is that I specifically bought them because I didn’t want to go with the standard black. I’ve found that pairing these leggings with taupe tops works really well for me. It makes the leggings pop and it forces me to wear a color I almost never do: taupe.
You can see more of this outfit here and other ways that I’ve styled these leggings here.
