The hand of a sweet woman who was showing me flowers that had fallen to the ground…
Hi, welcome to my neighborhood…
I’m so excited to show you around Alexandria, Louisiana. Specifically, this is a tour of the neighborhood where I work. We relocated to downtown Alexandria about 6 weeks ago and it has been pretty great. There were the usual concerns about moving to a new space:
- will there be enough parking?
- is the area safe?
- how will the influx of students impact local businesses?
So far, we haven’t had any real problems, just a few hiccups that come with moving. The business community has been awesome. The local library held an Open House for us, many of the businesses have extended discounts to our faculty, staff, and students, and the City of Alexandria has re-striped the streets to create more parking.
Anyway, here are a few pictures of my work home…
MY PLACE OF WORK
I’m the Director of Library Services and Social Media Coordinator at Central Louisiana Technical Community College. This is the exterior of one of our new campus buildings. Isn’t it beautiful? The corner that’s closest to us is the library. Yes, the patio is part of the library! I like to go out there and enjoy a cup of coffee before the day starts. Right now, they’re working on the sidewalks, so it’s all dusty and noisy, so no one goes out there but as soon as they’re finished, it’s back to drinking coffee and eating lunch. That area is also THE BEST selfie area ever. You can see pictures of my office here and here.
I think, some day, I may do a day in the life post and show you what it’s like to work as a librarian and social media person at a community college. My day is so varied and interesting…
PLACES TO EAT
This restaurant is just down the street from our campus… So far, I’ve had shrimp tacos and an avocado burger. Oh. My. Gosh. So good.
I love this place. It reminds me of a diner, Mel’s Diner from Alice to be exact. If you want a burger, this is the place to go. I don’t know what they do to their buns but YES!!
The Hubs and I had dinner there and I cannot recommend the Salmon Benedict highly enough. Delicious.
Y’all know I had to include my favorite coffee spot. Do you see the campus in the background? Yeah, I’m that close. I don’t have a favorite drink because I love all the things.
THE ART WORK
This car totally fascinates me. It reminds me of a scene from The Wiz. I don’t know the history of the car, I’ve asked around and the people I’ve asked have sorta giggled, shrugged, and said “Hmmmm, I don’t know. It’s always been here.” This wall is pretty cool too.
I love love love street art. Ever since our campus moved downtown, I like wandering the streets and looking at all of the paintings. I’d love to see someone creating, but this was all done waaaaay before we moved here.
This is the Hotel Bentley, an historic hotel in the neighborhood. I haven’t had the opportunity to go inside yet, but I plan to do so. I sure hope they let me take pictures when I do. The story goes that the hotel was built by in 1907 by Joseph Bentley because he refused service at another hotel. Ha! Can you imagine? Building a whole hotel out of spite!! Petty, so very petty. And I’m here for it.
Shop windows always capture my attention. Window shopping is my cardio.
And you all know my affinity for old buildings, exposed brick, and rusty things.
This was fun, I think I’d love to do something like this again. Maybe focus on specific restaurants or stores in the neighborhood? I don’t know. But I think I definitely need to take more pictures.
