We didn’t celebrate Halloween when I was growing up. Religious reasons. When I had my own children, I let them dress up when they were little, although I made it perfectly clear that I was not a fan. Once they hit junior high, they stopped dressing up, but they’d go to their grandma’s house to hand out candy to the neighborhood kids. This continued until we moved away from Pennsylvania. After that, we became non-observant.
The college where I currently work is heavily involved in community outreach. In fact, our biggest events are Zoo Boo, Alexandria Winter Fete, and Mardi Gras. Zoo Boo is a big Halloween celebration that takes place at our local zoo. Kids from across the city dress up in their costumes and come out to the zoo, where community businesses have tables with treats set up to hand out. It’s a safe and fun way for the kids to celebrate and for businesses to do a bit of outreach. Additionally, families get to tour the zoo and see the animals.
I’ve been at the college for almost five years, but this is the first time I’ve participated in Zoo Boo. I will say that it’s a lot of work, but it’s fun interacting with the kids and seeing our students outside of campus. Anyway, I thought I’d share a few pictures that I took before everyone arrived.
THE DISPLAYS
All along the zoo paths, there were different Halloween displays. Some of the skeletons were tucked away, so if you weren’t looking for them, they kind of snuck up on you. Definitely added to the creep factor.
THE ANIMALS
If you know anything about me, you know I love love love the monkeys. They are, hands down, my favorite animals. Bleu and Lola {and Squeekerz too}, I love you just as much as the monkeys. Promise.
I enjoyed walking the winding path through the zoo, trying to spot the various animals, the air was cool with a gentle breeze. Most of them were tucked away, probably still sleeping.
THE BOBCAT DEN
Our mascot is the bobcat, so, of course, I had to capture the little guy.
This is the spot where we set up the “Bobcat Den,” it was just to the side of the actual bobcat den.
The treats that we handed out to the kids. I’m not sure how many kids we saw, I was there from 8 am until about 12:15 pm, and it felt like a lot. Will I do this again next year? Honestly, I’m not sure. It’s a lot of work {and I didn’t even do the heavy lifting that comes with putting together the candy bags, setting up the photo booth, and more}.
WHAT I WORE
Earrings: Gift, Similar | Cardigan: Similar | Tee: Gift, Similar | Jeans: Similar | Sneakers: Exact
Sizing: I’m 5’4″ and a dress size 12 to 14 {L, XL}. I wear a size 9.5 shoe.
How fun is this tee shirt? When we were relocating from our old campus to the new one, I always referred to our new space as “The Bobcat Den,” so it’s cool to have it printed on a tee. And since it’s not totally Halloween related, I can wear it anytime. Truth is though, I don’t war tees very often, but since I have a pretty large collection, I’d really like to start incorporating them into my work wardrobe. I’m using these ideas for inspiration.
