Style Imitating Art: Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck
As the blogger and photographer behind Living Outside the Stacks, I independently select and write about stuff I love and things I think you’ll enjoy too. Living Outside the Stacks has affiliate and advertising partnerships so I get revenue from sharing this content and from your purchase. Thank you for your support.
Hey, hey, hey! How are things on your end? Things are going well here. I started telecommuting a week ago and we went under a “Stay at Home Order” yesterday at 5 pm. Not gonna lie, this is incredibly easy for me. I’m an introvert, so working from home and staying away from people — I feel like I’ve been preparing for this my whole life.
I do, however, empathize with my extrovert friends. I think they now have a greater appreciation for how hard it is for us to exist in their world.
I just wish people would take this situation a little more seriously. People are dying. Seriously, stay home.
ABOUT STYLE IMITATING ART
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}, Kim {Fierce Fashion Blog}, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art inspired outfits. And that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.
THE CURATOR
This week’s image was chosen by Salazar {14 Shades of Grey}.
INSPIRATION ART WORK
Salazar chose this image because she “watched a BBC mini-series called A Stitch in Time in which they recreate outfits from famous paintings (as in actually make the clothes, not just interpret them like we do with SIA), and this portrait is featured in this episode. She also wrote that this image gives a nod to St. Patrick’s Day.
STYLING IDEAS
First of all, isn’t this image fun and just so comforting? I mean, we always think of portraits as formal happenings. But, look, ol’ dude has kicked off his shoes and the pup is like “Why you spying?” LOL
Anyway, this image has the obvious colors of green, red, brown, and gold. But there are also plenty of textures: metallics, velvet, fur, and wood.
While everything seems heavy, there are definitely opportunities to go light and bright for Spring.
MY OUTFIT
So I thought since I’m staying home that I’d take a whole lot of pictures but I have not. Not that I haven’t been getting dressed or anything, I just haven’t really felt like snapping pictures. By the end of the day, I just wanna take Bleu and go for a walk.
So I chose this outfit because I thought it kind of mimicked the mood of the picture. You know, moody. The top is flowy and easy to wear {aka I don’t have to suck in}.
I love love love these faux leather pants. They make me feel totally bad a$$. And the shoes are fun too.
So, tell me, how are things in your neck of the woods? Are you doing OK? Have you developed a routine? Leave a comment telling me how things are going.
