Coffee Talk {In the Cafe}
Hi, and welcome to Coffee Talk. In case you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stuff that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And there may be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun. 1. I heard on the radio that sales of George Orwell’s 1984 have skyrocketed since news of the domestic surveillance program broke. Don’t get me started on that… On second thought, let’s discuss that. The government should not have the open ended ability to spy on the American…

It was with a heavy heart that I read that Terrilynn Monette’s body was found over the weekend. I wrote about Monette before here and here. Monette had relocated from California to New Orleans to teach in underserved schools. She did so well that her class went…

Fifty years after it was canceled, the graduating class of 1963 was able to attend their prom. 1963 was the height of the Civil Rights Movement and tensions were so high in Birmingham, Alabama that the proms for the five segregated high schools in the city were…

Makes Me Wanna Weep {In the Cafe}
Hi, and welcome to Coffee Talk. In case you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stories that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head and asking “What the what?” to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever and make me wonder who has time for that. And there may be a recipe or two thrown in just for fun. So grab a cup of whatever you fancy and let’s start chatting… 1. Have you been following the case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia abortion doctor who’s on trial for the murder of 4…

1. Last week, a federal judge in Brooklyn, New York ordered that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration make the morning after pill available without a prescription to women of all ages. This includes girls under the age of 17. I’m not going to get into the discussion over whether abortion should be legal or not because this isn’t about abortion, this is about preventing a pregnancy before it occurs. However, I will get into the discussion over whether or not children under the age of 17 should be allowed to get medication, any medication, without a prescription or parental knowledge. You can read the story here. There is something fundamentally…

Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And there may be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun. 1. Two weeks ago Terrilynn Monette was out celebrating her “Teacher of the Year” nomination, within a few hours she would vanish without a trace. There’s so much wrong with this story that it’s hard to find the beginning… Monette was last seen celebrating with friends at Parlay’s,…

So often when focusing on the news, we highlight the bad and ignore the good, well, this week, I want it all good… 1. A United Airlines crew held up a flight so that a man could make his connecting flight in order to be with his mom as she lay dying. Seriously, this made my eyes well up at my desk… A man who was flying from California to Texas to be by his mom’s side missed his connecting flight and became distraught. Once the flight crew found out what happened, they offered the man some tissues and their apologies. In the meantime, the pilot called the connecting pilot…

1. I big puffy heart social media; it has allowed me the opportunity to chat with you on Facebook, see your lives on Instagram, and hoard on Pinterest but ~ and this is a big BUT ~ there are a lot of things that are inappropriate for social media. Things like breaking up, drunk texting, and notifying people of a family member’s death. It happened. As in a Georgia police department notified a mother of the death of her 30~year~old son via Facebook. Shaking my head The police department’s Facebook page isn’t even identified as being run by or affiliated with the police department {a picture of a rapper is…

This week’s edition is brought to you by the letters “R” and “S” as in “Racism is still alive and well. And so is stupidity.” 1. An African American nurse is suing a Michigan hospital because it granted a father’s request that “no African American nurses take care of his baby.” While making the request, the father flashed a tat that looked similar to a swastika. sigh Instead of denying the request, the charge nurse reassigned the African American nurses and then put up a notice on the clipboard that read: “No African American nurses to take care of baby.” Are you serious? The charge nurse didn’t realize that this was a racist…

1. A New York court ruled that a bus driver who failed a random drug test can keep her job. Did I mention that this bus driver is a school bus driver? The firing was determined to be “too severe for a 10 year employee”. There are so many words tumbling around in my head right now… Students are kicked off sports teams, people go to jail for possession but someone who is driving around the streets in a big ol’ bus full of students cannot be fired for failing a drug test? The school district had argued that it had adopted a zero~tolerance policy for positive drug tests and…
