    Day 19: My Talent

    5 December 2010 / 1 Comment

Is the ability to slay confusion with the appropriate resource one reference question at a time… I can also balance a stack of books, a cup of coffee and a cell phone while fixing a paper jam without breaking a sweat. What’s your talent?  Do you use your powers for good or evil?

    How I Became a Librarian

    2 December 2010 / 7 Comments

The other day I read a post on Bobbi’s blog, Librarian By Day, about a potential MLIS student who was looking for advice on whether or not she should go to library school and it got me to thinking about why I became a librarian and whether or not I’d recommend this as a career choice for, say, one of my kids. I didn’t grow up wanting to be a librarian but I knew whatever I did, it would have something to do with helping people.  (I actually wanted to be a journalist.  Or a spy.  Either way, I thought I’d be covering coups in third world countries or something.…

    Day 4: My Favorite Books

    11 November 2010 / 5 Comments

When I was a little girl, my favorite place in the world was the library.  I was a nerdy little girl who was often the object of a lot of teasing and the butt of endless jokes, and the library was the one place the bullies never seemed to enter.  The librarian, Mr. Wolford, would push a book cart my way and tell me to shelve.  Or he’d slide a stack of books across his desk and say he thought I’d enjoy them.  But it was my friend, Lisa, who introduced me to the joys of Danielle Steel when we were in about the 8th or 9th grade…  I would…

1 October is Follow a Library Day on Twitter

    29 September 2010 / 6 Comments

Tips for Library Patrons Don’t just follow your library, talk to them If a librarian does something well, tweet about it Offer suggestions for material Tweet about activities that you and your family enjoy Following your library shows that you support your library.  Talk to your librarians on Twitter, engage other library patrons, use Twitter to set up book group meetings or to share movie suggestions.  Treat Twitter as an extension of your library’s services, because that is exactly what it is ~ reference help in 140 characters or less. Tips for Libraries Follow your patrons back Respond to their concerns Update your status often Promote your events These may…
