Distracted Students and Shattered Dreams {In the Cafe}

by Daenel

Coffee Talk {Living Outside the Stacks}1. “Leggings are not pants!” Every time I look at the black leggings folded up in my drawer, my daughter’s voice echoes in my ears. She said that the first time she saw me in a denim shirt, leggings, and boots. You can see the offending outfit here. For the record, the denim shirt was long enough to cover the junk in my trunk but still my daughter said I was a big ol’ don’t. I didn’t agree with her and wore the outfit anyway. Upon further reflection, the socks were also a big ol’ oh no you don’t.

However, in recent weeks, I’ve come to realize that leggings are best worn not as pants but as an alternative to tights. Or as a layering piece under a sweater dress. One of the main reasons I’ve come to this conclusion is there are too many women who don’t know that they’re supposed to cover their bum when wearing leggings. And at no point should WHITE underwear be visible underneath BLACK leggings. But that’s a discussion for another post…

The reason I’m talking about this is because a school in California (as well as one in Washington, D.C.) labeled leggings/jeggings as inappropriate school wear. You can read the story here. The complaint is that students and staff are becoming so distracted by some of the attire that it’s making teaching/learning difficult.

I don’t disagree with this decision at all. The schools aren’t saying the girls can’t wear leggings or jeggings at all, what they are saying is if you’re going to wear them, make sure that your butt is covered. There are plenty of cute tunics, longer sweaters, and tees that are both modest and fashionable.

2. I remember when I was in junior high and I was in the spelling bee, I was soooo excited. I had dreams of making it big; being on the Today Show with Jane Pauley, the two of us becoming bffs, and me edging Bryant Gumble out of his seat. Yes, I was that big of a nerd that I thought the bee was a stepping stone to celebrity. I was eliminated in the second round. I’m not sure what word took me down; I’ve blocked it from my memory. Anyway, as I grew older and focused less on spelling bees and more on, ummm, boys, I realized something: spelling bee winners do not get celebrity endorsements.

I’ve followed the Scripps Spelling Bee off and on for years, because danged if those kids aren’t impressive with their “Can you give me a definition?” as you see them mentally spelling out the words before vocalizing… Anyway, there’s a new wrinkle to the bee this year: the kids will now have to know the definition of the words. Say what now? During the bee students will have to take a multiple~choice vocab test. Things have just got real. You can read the story here.

I don’t know if I’ll watch the entire competition this year I’m still a little bitter; but I do know that the little girl who so desperately wanted to win the spelling bee will be reading the dictionary, but now she’ll be memorizing the definitions too.

What I Wore {In the Closet}

by Daenel

Hey, everyone! Hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. I know I am. Nothing particularly great is happening, I’m just happy to be able to see another day. Throwing my hands up and praising God! Good health and a fabulous hair day, what more could a girl ask for?

Teal Cardi Floral Shirt Tan Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

A few weeks ago, one of my coworkers said “You have just got to stop coming to work looking so cute!” I started laughing and said “But I’m a blogger.” Because that’s the answer to everything. But it’s true, when you know you’re going to post pics of yourself, you step up your game. That’s not to say I don’t have days when I wanna take it down a notch but dressing nice does make me feel better.

Teal Cardi Floral Shirt Tan Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

It also makes me feel pretty confident. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a tucker but I wanted my outfit to resemble one that I found on Pinterest, so in the shirt went. And you know what? No one pointed at me and laughed. No one said “Girl, you know that gut is too big to be wearing that.”

Teal Cardi Floral Shirt Tan Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

And even if someone had said something, I wouldn’t have cared. Well, maybe just a little bit. But I was having a good day and my confidence was on full display.

What makes you feel confident?

Cream Sweater, Citron Tee, Brown Cami, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought Dang, I look cute? Yes? Well, that’s how I felt all day Friday. I got up to go to work and I just felt like wearing something bright and cheery but relatively warm. Dude, I am so over these freezing cold temps. I know it’s winter and everything but seriously? We can’t have temps in the 60s? So anyway, I started fumbling around in my drawers and I found the citron tee and was like JACKPOT!

Cream Sweater, Citron Tee, Brown Cami, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

And let me tell ya something, when you know you look cute, it makes even the little buggeries easier to tolerate. I’m starting to think there may be something to Abbyleigh’s motto: “Dress for the day you want to have, not the one that’s trying to have you.”

Cream Sweater, Citron Tee, Brown Cami, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

I know it sounds kinda superficial but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being confident, squaring your shoulders, and facing the day.

Cream Sweater, Citron Tee, Brown Cami, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

And it doesn’t hurt that that absolutely adorable sweater only set me back $6! I’m telling you, I absolutely love our Goodwill. I never thought I’d ever say that… I remember having to shop there as a kid and hating it, now my girls are all “Mom, next time you go to the thrift store, take us with you!” My how things have changed.

Blue Scarf, Black Tunic, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Yesterday was one of them days. You know the one you want to hurry up and end so you can go home, get into your comfy cozies, drink coffee and watch mind numbing nonsense like The Sisterhood. I honestly don’t know what was wrong with me. I kept forgetting how to do the simplest of things. My coworkers chalked up to my having been out with the flu for 10 days, I think I just needed a big ol’ cosmic do over.

Blue Scarf, Black Tunic, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Maybe I should’ve taken a cue from my outfit and played artist for the day. If it hadn’t been so cold outside I would’ve taken my camera on gone on a photo walk during my lunch. I really needed to take some time to collect myself.

Blue Scarf, Black Tunic, and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

I think this outfit reflects my personality, it’s relaxed and easy going but intricate in its detail. Or maybe I’m just over thinking everything because I’m all caught up in my own feelings. I don’t know. It’s one of those days so that makes it one of those posts…

How do you deal when you just want to hole up with a cup of coffee and not too much else?

What I Wore {In the Closet}

by Daenel

I’ve spent the last four days in the same pair of sweat pants and tee, huddled under my blankets with tea, tissues and the TV to keep me company. That’s right, 2013’s gift to me was some horrid nastiness that completely stripped me of my voice and, at times, my will to live. But I survived. For that, I’m incredibly happy. Funny, how one’s desire to die, lessens when one is no longer hacking up a lung. Of course that means that I don’t have a “real” What I Wore Wednesday post because, well, my sweat pants are disgusting.

So I decided to highlight some of my key leg looks from last year and one from this year. I know, you’re thinking Leg looks? Whatever do you mean? When I was a teen in the ahem 80s, I loved wearing colored and patterned tights. It drove my family nuts. Seriously, there wasn’t a striped hose or neon patterned leg that I didn’t like.

I don’t know why I stopped wearing colored tights. I know why I stopped wearing neon ones, what I don’t know is why I started wearing them in the first place. But I absolutely adore them now. I almost never wear them as a match to my outfits but more like a contrast to my outfit, I just think that makes my clothes more fun.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite leg looks from last year:

Burgundy Tights {Living Outside the Stacks}

Although I’m wearing five different colors, I think this works because everything is sort of muted. Your eyes sort of graze over the entire outfit instead of getting stuck in one place. You can see the original outfit by clicking here.

Mustard Legs

This had to have been my favorite look of the year. I don’t know if it’s because of the mustard colored tights or the mustard against the teal or what, but I just adored this. In fact, I liked the look so much that I spent weeks looking for a mustard colored cardi. Cannot wait to show that to you. Anyway, you can see the original outfit by clicking here.

White Sweater Tights {Living Outside the Stacks}

Whoever invented white sweater tights should get some sort of medal. I think they’re highly underrated but they’re so versatile. Really, next time you see a pair, grab them, you’ll wear them with everything and you legs will stay toasty warm. You can see the original outfit by clicking here.

Blue Legs {Living Outside the Stacks}

I think this is one of the outfits that would’ve totally freaked out my parents back in the day. I’m not sure if I’d wear this again, it was fun but it was a little too bold for me. You can see the original outfit by clicking here.

What’s the craziest color tights you’ve ever worn?

My Favorite Outfits {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

Hi, everyone! How was your Christmas? Mine was wonderful. The hubs read the Christmas story to the kids and we talked about why we celebrate Christmas, how we’ve been blessed over the year, and then gave the kids their gifts. Even though our kids are teenagers, I like the tradition that we established when they were little people. It feels comfortable. Do you have any Christmas traditions?

Another tradition I have is to do a review of the past year’s blog posts. It’s fun to look back and see how I’ve changed and to see what goals I’ve accomplished and what goals I need to push with me into 2013. So I thought it’d be fun to start my review with some of my favorite outfits from the past year.

What I Wore 6 June

Brown, Cream and Green Sleeveless Dress {Living Outside the Stacks}

Dress ~ Dress Barn

I bought this dress to wear to a wedding years ago. Unfortunately, we were unable to attend the wedding so the dress sat unworn for months. Since then I’ve worn it twice. And every time I put it on I feel so elegant. Almost like I should be on the cover of a magazine.

What I Wore 11 July

Print Blouse and Jeans {Living Outside the Stacks}

Blouse ~ Deb’s

Jeans, Wedges ~ Kmart

Hands down, this is one of my favorite summer outfits. The colors on the blouse light up my face and the jeans fit like a dream. And, well, you can’t go wrong with wedges.

What I Wore 5 September

Denim Jacket, White Sundress  and Cowboy Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Denim Jacket, Sundress ~ Walmart

Cowboy Boots ~ Thrifted

This outfit was totally built around those cowboy boots. When I saw them at the store I literally squealed; I’d been wanting a pair of cowboy boots forever. And, come on, they’re red and they’re fabulous.

What I Wore 8 October

Citron, Purple Polka Dots, Jeans and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi ~ Target

Blouse ~ Thrifted

Jeans ~ Kmart

Boots ~ Payless

I’d been trying to get more color into my life and I think I nailed it here. The citron in the sweater goes with the purple, greens and oranges in the blouse without being all matchy matchy. Nothing but fun.

What I Wore 17 October

Black Cardi, Tank, Khaki Skirt, Tights and Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi, Boots ~ HSN.com

Tank, Skirt ~ Walmart

Tights ~ Rite Aid

Again, it’s all about the boots. Aren’t they fabulous? They’re Sebago and they’re sold on HSN.com. I do believe they are the best boots ever. They’re incredibly comfortable and versatile; I can wear them with anything. And that sweater? I waited months for it to go on sale. It was totally worth it.

What I Wore 13 November

Teal Cardi, Tank and Brown Skirt {Living Outside the Stacks}

Cardi ~ Deb’s

Tank ~ Kmart

Skirt ~ Thrifted

I absolutely adore the color combination here. Normally, I would’ve played it safe and worn a brown sweater but popping it with the teal just pulled it all together. I also stepped outside of my comfort zone and wore a belt around my waist. I almost never do that but I like the way it defined my waist. You can check out my favorite thrifted outfits by clicking here.

What I Wore 11 December

Black Sweater, Brown Cami, Floral Skirt and Black Boots {Living Outside the Stacks}

Sweater ~ Walmart

Floral Pins ~ Handmade by Me

Cami ~ Kmart

Skirt ~ Thrifted

Boots ~ Payless

I heart this skirt so much! It makes me feel all girly and fun. I just wanna grab the hem and twirl like a little girl. And the boots keep everything from feeling too precious.

So that’s it, my favorite outfits from 2012. I’m looking forward to sharing a happy, healthy and fashionable 2013 with you.

What I Wore Friday

Friday was a total down day for me. If it wasn’t for the fact that breathing is an automatic occurrence, I probably wouldn’t have done it. That’s just how incredibly lazy I felt. I think all the excitement of Thanksgiving got to me. My parents were here, my twin sister and her family… It was just an incredibly overwhelming laugh infested exhaustion inducing day.

What I Wore Friday {Living Outside the Stacks}

What I Wore Friday {Living Outside the Stacks}

I’ve been seeing the denim shirt and leggings look all over the place, so I decided to give it a whirl… And, well, I’m glad I didn’t really have anywhere to go. The hubs thought it was a thumbs up, I thought it was a thumbs down. Maybe if the shirt were a little more fitted and longer. And if I had something around my waist.

What I Wore Saturday

Nothing but jammies.

What I Wore Sunday with a Special Link Up

On Sunday I went to church and had the most amazing time. It’s a beautiful thing when you can walk into church feeling overwhelmed and walk out feeling renewed.

Twenty~Nine {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I cannot wait to slip into a food induced coma. I’m hosting this year, which means that I’m supplying:

  • turkey
  • ham
  • brussels  sprouts and bacon
  • candied yams
  • glazed carrots with craisins
  • green beans
  • mashed potatoes with garlic and sour cream
  • corn bread
  • sweet potato pie
  • pumpkin pie
  • pecan pie

My sister is supplying the macaroni and cheese. Now, I have to tell you about this mac~n~cheese, I am not a mac~n~cheese eater BUT one year my sister made one that was so good that I didn’t let her leave my house until she’d made several more and frozen them for me to eat later. It was that good.

My mom is bringing the stuffing. This makes me happy too. There are so many good memories wrapped up in that stuffing. Memories of my whole family gathered in the kitchen, helping my dad cook. Everyone except me. I hated cooking. But I did wander through periodically to “sample”.

What I Wore Wednesday

Wednesday was a regular work day for me. I’m a librarian, so I have a lot of flexibility in what I wear. I’m not a business suit kinda girl, so being able to express myself in my clothing is pretty important to me. In fact, it’s so important the before my interview, I went to the library to check the staff out. I’m not saying I would have turned the job down if it had been more formal but there definitely would have been so hesitancy…

What I Wore Wednesday {Living Outside the Stacks}

What I Wore Thursday

I’m trying desperately to get into the colored tights trend. I think it looks so cool on other women, I’m still not sure how I feel about it for myself. I did read that ladies over 40 (I’m not there yet. I’ll be 40 in March so….), should stay away from patterned tights. How do you feel about patterned tights on ladies 40 and over?

What I Wore Sunday

Remember last week when I talked about all the cute skirts that I purchased at the local thrift store? Well, this is another one of them. I think this is by far my favorite. You can’t tell but it’s oh~so~very swingy. It took everything within me not to twirl. And can I tell you how much I paid for this little piece of floral happiness? $3.00!  Yeah, I’m pretty darn happy.

Twenty~Eight {What I Wore Wednesday}

by Daenel

This week has been crazy busy but not nearly as crazy busy as next week will be. Can you believe it’s almost Thanksgiving? I am so not ready. I don’t have a turkey or a ham. I have one can of pumpkin pie filling and a bag of potatoes. Did I mention that I’m having my parents, my sister and her family over? Are you ready? Do you have a menu planned?

I’ve got nothing. Well, no, I do know what I’m going to wear and, really, looking cute is all that’s important. The pictures will last forever, the meal not so much.

What I Wore Friday

The hubs and I spent some time together on Friday, just hanging out. I almost never wear dresses or skirts unless we’re going to church but I just couldn’t resist slipping into this cute little peasant dress. Can you believe I got it on sale for $2.47? Craziness, huh?

Notice the socks? I love the look of socks with boots and skirts/dresses. I just think it looks so playful and fun. And it keeps my toes warm.

What I Wore Monday

Today began the Colors of the Season Fall Fashion Challenge and the first challenge was to wear teal. This one was so hard for me. I knew it would be. I’d long ago given my only teal item to one of my daughters who then gave it to one of my other daughters. I took it back.

And that skirt? I bought it at the thrift store! I cannot believe I found something so cute. I’m always complaining that our thrift stores have the ugliest clothes but looook what happens when you go digging. It still had the tags on it!

Also, you can’t tell, but I’m wearing wine colored tights. Yep, I’m totally digging the colored tights trend.

What I Wore Tuesday

I’ve had that velvet blazer in my closet for. Ever. I’m not sure what made me buy it… The color, the velvet, the Victorian cut? I don’t know but it probably would’ve continued to sit in my closet had it not been for this challenge.

Also I was having a really good hair day…

I’m sitting here watching the election returns on TV and feeling almost exactly like I did every time I gave birth. deep breath annnnnd puuuuush OK, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration but the anticipation is killing me. I didn’t have any ultrasounds, so no gender reveals until the birth day. But this jumping back and forth, is it Obama, is it Romney is causing me to have heart palpitations…

So let’s get to something less stressful and a whole lot more fun, clothes!

What I Wore Sunday

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

Sunday was a crazy busy day for us. The family and I went to our regular church and then the hubs and I went with our pastor and his wife to another service in Illinois. My goal was to be comfortable, cute and warm. I think I managed to hit all three. I also wanted to show off my new scarf. Really, how adorbs is that infinity scarf? If you’d like to crochet one for yourself, the pattern is right here.

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

What I Wore Monday

What I Wore Monday {Living Outside the Stacks}

What is with my face in this picture? And do I look super awkward or what? Whatevs… I also made the scarf in this picture. It’s a longer version of the Infinity Scarf in the Sunday picture. Can you tell I loves my scarves? And those boots. OK, lemme tell you, those are probably the most expensive pair of shoes I own but they were worth every penny. They’re crazy comfortable and can go with anything.

What I Wore to Vote

What I Wore to Vote {Living Outside the Stacks}

Thank you to all the men and women who came before me and fought racism, sexism and pure hatred so that my voice can be heard. Every time I cast my ballot I think of you.

Colors of the Season: Fall Fashion ChallengeI’m trying to add more color to my wardrobe. I’m such a neutrals kinda girl. But I do love color. So funny how that works. Anyway, to kinda help me along I’ll be participating in the Colors of the Season: Fall Fashion Challenge that’s being hosted by Megan at Megan Mae Daily and Keely at Casual Chic Kiki. The one color I’ll probably have a hard time with is teal. I used to have a really cute teal cardi but one of my daughters (probably that college student) swiped it. Maybe I can hit up a thrift shop and see what I can find? Or maybe I can do something funky with my nails?

Do you have favorite fall colors? Is there a color combination you really want to try?

Last week, while pinning yet another outfit to Pinterest, I said to myself Butterfly, ’cause I always call myself Butterfly, what’re you gonna do with all these pins? They’re just sitting in you’re virtual closet, how about trying to wear some of that stuff? So that’s what I decided to do, wear as much of the stuff that I’ve pinned as I can. And this is what I’ve come up with so far…

I felt like a Russian peasant in this outfit. You can see the inspiration pin right here.

This is what I wore to church on Sunday…
What I Wore Sunday

How cute is this manicure? I was inspired by this one on Pinterest. I’m trying to  branch out with my nail colors, I tend to stick with blacks and browns (every now and then I may mix it up with burgundy or some other dark color). But when I saw the multicolored nails, I was like Yes, that is so me! Next up, I need to update my makeup. sigh

What I Wore Sunday

Have you noticed how much I love cardis?  Usually, I stick to plain ones so that I can customize them with the little crocheted flowers that I make but I couldn’t resist this sweater. Isn’t it adorbs? I changed the buttons out on it from plain black buttons to multicolored leaves.

What I Wore Sunday

Remember a few weeks ago when I mourned the loss of my favorite pair of brown boots? Well, I was finally able to replace them. I absolutely love the look of lace~up boots. I dig the funky, vintage, boho feel of them. And to find a pair that’s comfortable too? Yes, y’all!

Hi! How’s it going? I’m doing well. The past few weeks have been a blur. I’ve been attending a variety of library related webinars. So very excited to share some of the things I learned with you guys. Seriously, you wouldn’t believe how relevant library work is to the world of blogging…

Anyway, one of the webinars I attended was hosted by Library Wardrobe and the American Library Association where we talked about how personal style affects people’s perceptions of librarians both inside and outside of the profession. Very interesting discussion, no?

One of the questions asked was do we go out of our way to look like anything but a librarian? Crazy cat lady with multiple cardigans and sensible shoes.  Is the trend towards hipster chic within the library just an extension of the stereotype?

I think the overwhelming conclusion was that despite the stereotypes, librarians are as diverse as the materials in our libraries and our styles reflect who we are as professionals and as individuals.

I like clothes and I absolutely love shoes, so that’s where I tend to express my creativity and individuality. I don’t think that I get viewed as less professional but it does get me a lot of “You don’t look like a librarian” comments. I’m not a business suit kind of lady and I don’t think that I could thrive in that type of environment.

This got me to thinking about moms and how people have a perception of moms as being dowdy and anything but trendy. Mom jeans, anyone?

So my question to you is do you go out of your way to not look like a mom? Do you notice that people treat you differently based on your fashion choices?

What I Wore Monday

Earlier this week, my friend Keisa,  leanlibrarian on Instagramchallenged me to ditch my sweats and flip flops in favor of actual clothing, to include makeup and combed hair. Even on days when I don’t plan to leave the house. You may think, oh that’s not so difficult but it is… I’m one of those girls who only does the hair and makeup thing if I’m leaving the house. Otherwise, it’s sweats, oversized tee, flip flops and what the hubs affectionately calls a “nub” but I call a “messy bun”. He really has issues with just about any hairstyle that requires a hair tie. When I’m in the mood to get him going, it’s really kinda funny to see how many pony tails I can create to provoke

Back of Hair {Living Outside the Stacks}

Anyway, Keisa and I have been holding each other accountable on Instagram, using the hashtags #nomorefrump and #nomorefrumpymom, if you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you. It really is a lot of fun sharing ideas, encouraging each other and just talking about how to mix and match different things.

What I Wore Monday {Living Outside the Stacks}

As you can tell, my style is somewhat eclectic. I’m almost certain it’s a result of growing up overseas. I also firmly believe that things do not have to match, they just have to go together.  Hmmmm….what is up with my weird expression? Maybe it had something to do with my photographer?

Skinny Jeans ~ Walmart

What I Wore Tuesday

On Tuesday I stepped way out of my comfort zone and wore a denim shirt that’s been hanging in my closet since the beginning of summer.

It was on sale and I’d seen a ton of cute denim shirts on Pinterest and thought I could pull it off but when the time came I chickened out. But this week, I decided to throw caution to the wind and the shirt a try.

What I Wore Tuesday {Living Outside the Stacks}

I think I pulled it off. I also tucked my shirt in. gasp And wore a belt. double gasp My waist isn’t quite what I want it to be so I try not to emphasize it too much but, again, I think I pulled it off.

A New Line and a Deal from Shabby Apple {#nomorefrump}

by Daenel

Shabby Apple Highclere Collection Discount Code HIGHThis week, my friend Keisa,  leanlibrarian on Instagram, has challenged me to ditch my sweats and flip flops in favor of actual clothing, makeup and combed hair. Even on days when I’m not leaving the house. You may think, oh that’s not so difficult but it is… But I’m one of those girls who only does the hair and makeup thing if I’m leaving the house. Otherwise, it’s sweats, oversized tee, flip flops and what the hubs affectionately calls a “nub” but I call a “messy bun”.

We’ll be holding each other accountable on Instagram, so if you’d like to play along please follow me (I’m 4daenelt) and use the hashtag #nomorefrump.

So like any good wannabe fashionista, I’ll be drawing my inspiration from all over the web. But I’ll be specifically checking out Shabby Apple. Have you seen the women’s dresses from Shabby Apple? Seriously, they have some of the most romantic vintage inspired dresses. I know I lean more towards boho chic, but I could easily see how many of their dresses could fit into my wardrobe (just add some funky jewelry, colored tights and a pair of boots)…

And to celebrate the launch of their new line, Highclere, Shabby Apple is offering shoppers a 10% discount sitewide using the code High. The offer expires on 10 October 2012. Take a little looksee and tell me what you like. I’m really diggin’ the Jacobean, a long grey knit jersey v~neck wrap dress. Throw it on with a chunky sweater, a faux fur collar, tights with booths and you’re all set for Autumn…

Will you be dumping the sweats with Keisa and me for the week? If so, leave a comment below and let me know so I can cheer you on.

Yesterday was the New Staff Orientation at the University. It was basically an opportunity for all of the new staff to get together and learn about the history and culture of the University. I always enjoy these sessions, it makes me feel like I’m part of something big and important. Not that I don’t feel that way beforehand, but after listening to the history of the University and seeing where we are and where we headed, I always get this sense of pride… Anyway, one of the things that stuck with me was the reaction of some of the women when the President of the University asked each of us to share something unique about ourselves.

Whenever I’ve been apart of group that’s done this exercise, the men and women generally have the same reaction: the men share hobbies and the women will either share something about their kids or say there’s nothing unique about them.

It kinda made me a little sad that some of the women couldn’t think of one unique/interesting to thing to share about themselves. If I could tell women anything, it would be this: YOU ARE UNIQUE BECAUSE YOU’RE YOU. No one else has lived your life, dreamed your dreams, cried your tears.

I have a twin sister but I’m still a unique individual. My experiences are different from those of my sister. I express my feelings differently. She and I shared a womb but we are as different as night and day, with our own gifts and our own stories to tell.

What I Wore Sunday

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

I wore this outfit to church on Sunday. I was inspired by this outfit on Pinterest. I bought the dress from QVC about 2 or 3 years ago and I think I’ve only worn it once or twice. I was never really sure how to wear it. I just thought it was cute, ya know?

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

The bracelet and ring are Target purchases from a few years back. Notice I didn’t do an exact copy of the outfit, I simply drew inspiration from it. I liked the colors and the sorta boho vibe of it all. But I also have a bit of quirk to my personality, that’s why I added the funky brass ring and the wooden bangle.

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

The sweater and boots are also purchases from way back in the day. Sometimes it’s good to shop your closet, especially when you find new ways to work them… You can’t tell from the picture but I’m also wearing gray, tan and cream socks. I love boots, socks and a dress.

Tell me, what makes you unique?

What I Wore Sunday

I’ve spent the last few days looking at some of my favorite clothes to see how I can transition them for fall/winter. Here in Missouri, we’re still battling high 80 and low 90 degree weather but I’m trying to bring in fall. Even if I have to do it all by myself.

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

The hubs talked me into buying this dress. I wasn’t sure about it because of the deep V in the front. I’ve seen other women wear maxi dresses very similar to this without a layering piece and they still look modest, I tried but I just couldn’t pull it off. And, since I was going to church, I figured, hey, better keep the girls under wraps… So I added a lace cami and a denim jacket and felt muuuuch better.

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

For fall and winter, I think I can add a cute scarf to fill in the neckline and it’ll be perfect. I may even swap out the denim jacket for a chunky sweater in a corresponding color. Or maybe even that cool faux fur vest that I have hanging in my closet…  What d’you think?

What I Wore Sunday {Living Outside the Stacks}

The hi~lo hem also made me pause. I haven’t worn a hi~lo hem in forever. I think since I was in my mid~twenties… But I kinda liked it once I got it on. The hem kinda brings the attention to the shoes, ya know? So now I’m thinking some funky boots for fall/winter and it’ll be all good.

Are you preparing your wardrobe for fall and winter? What are you most looking forward to wearing?

What I Wore Sunday

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, I absolutely positively love Junk Gypsies on HGTV, so when I went to their website and saw that mug on sale, I just had to have it. Unfortunately, you can’t see it very well in that picture, but trust me, it’s one big honkin’ hunk of ceramic fabulousness. I didn’t receive any compensation for this, I just big puffy heart that show and, well, that ginormous mug helps me to get my coffee happy on.

What I Wore Sunday

Anyway, I wore this outfit to church on Sunday, the dress is a little somethin’ somethin’ I picked up from Walmart a few years ago but rarely wear. Not really sure why, since I absolutely adore it. And, yo, it was a steal for something like $12. The jacket has been in my closet forever.

What I Wore Sunday

See how I’m finally starting to work accessories into my outfit? I don’t know why it’s taken me so long, I have so much great stuff that just sits in my drawer…

What I Wore Sunday

Ever since we moved to Missouri a year ago, I have been dying to get a pair of cowboy boots. I mean, like seriously scoping out cowboy boots only to get sticker shock. As much as I love shoes, there’s no way I could justify the price. So when my coworkers and I went into this little consignment shop called The Clothesline, I about fainted when I spotted a red pair sitting on a shelf. Honestly, how perfect are those boots? And they only cost me $8.50. Shut the front door! Total score, right?

What I Wore Monday

Monday was such a muggy day. I wasn’t sure how to dress ~ leggings and sweater, jeans and tee, skirt with boots… Everything just seemed so wrong. You know how those days are… I ended up choosing a denim skirt with a billowy blouse, boots and a stack of bracelets. Probably not the most library friendly outfit but I looked cute, and, in the end, isn’t that really all that matters?

What I Wore Wednesday

Do you see that necklace? I had one like it many years ago and I gave it to my twin sister because she liked it, I never thought I’d find another one. Well, lo and behold, I found one at a little hippie store that closed a few months back.I think that’s called “Good Jewelry Karma”. I cannot tell you how happy that made me.

What I Wore Wednesday

That skirt is probably one of my favorite pieces of clothing. It was given to me by a friend. I’d been looking for a denim skirt forever. Not just any denim skirt, I wanted one with a slit in the front. I don’t know why but I love denim skirts with front slits. It’s a little big so it either falls real low on my hips or rides real high on my chest. At some point, I need to have it fixed until then, I’ll just keep wearing it with untucked tops.

What I Wore Wednesday

My adoration for front slit denim skirts is topped only by love for boots. And boots with a back zip? Stop with yourself. Aren’t these just too cute? I cannot wait to wear them with leggings and boot socks with a baggy sweater. Come on Fall!

What I Wore Sunday

I think this may be the most colorful outfit in my closet. I felt like walking summer! I started to wear an orange jacket with the skirt and a white tank but I thought that might be a bit too much, so I figured reversing the colors (white cardi and orange tank) would tone it down a bit…

What I Wore Wednesday

I totally need to invest in a remote! I’m exhausted from trying to run back into place before the timer goes off. Really, you should see me running across my front porch. I’m almost certain my neighbors think not only am I incredibly vain but a bit goofy too.

What I Wore Wednesday

I love that I got to wear my beaded bracelets… Although they weren’t matchy matchy, they did go with and I think they added enough color to make the outfit even more fun.

What I Wore Wednesday

And so as not to totally blind everyone, I wore neutral colored shoes…

What I Wore Tuesday

OK, maybe this is outfit is just as colorful as the one above. giggle But I do remember a while back saying that I wanted to branch out beyond my usual earth tones and neutrals.

What I Wore Wednesday

What I Wore Wednesday

Don’t you just love the ikat print on this blouse? I wasn’t sure what to pair it with but I thought the bright yellow cardi added a bit of fun. It can get kinda chilly in the library, ya know?

What I Wore Wednesday

I finally invested in a pair of flats for work. My feet are so happy now. And I’ve eliminated that annoying click click clickety click from walking down uncarpetted halls. I also bought a pair of red combat boots! I cannot wait to show them off.
