Banned Books Week Review and Giveaway: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee {CLOSED}
I firmly believe in the right to free access to information. There are many books that I simply will not read for religious and/or personal reasons but I do not believe I have the right to ban those books from being read. If I censor your speech and your ideas, it’s just a matter of time before someone censors mine. This is not my normal book review but more of a discussion about some of the reasons why To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been challenged and/or banned over the years. SYNOPSIS OF TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BY HARPER LEE Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird is…

First Day Jitters Instagram Style {In the Library}
Today was my first day at my new job. I was so incredibly nervous. The day began with me standing in front of my closet desperately trying to figure out what to wear… I ended up going with a pair of black flats with a bow on the toe. I wasn’t sure how much walking I’d be doing and the campus has a lot of hills. I was happy with my choice, I totally ended up doing a lot of walking. In the hot Missouri sun. I would’ve been miserable if my feet had hurt too. I work as a librarian at the Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University. It…

Round 8 {Library Day in the Life Project}
Once again, my friend Bobbi at Librarian by Day is coordinating the Library Day in the Life Project. The Library Day in the Life Project is a semi~annual librarian and library worker share fest. In other words, librarians and library workers from all over the world (and I do mean all over the world) share a day or a week in their lives with each other. It’s a chance to exchange ideas, share projects and talk about the different jobs within libraries. I’ve participated in the Library Day in the Life Project whenever I’ve had the opportunity because I believe deeply that libraries provide vital services for the communities they…

2012 {To Be Read List}
According to that sweet little widget on Goodreads, I met my goal of reading 12 books during the year 2011. Hmmmm…. that may have been my stated goal on Goodreads, but I didn’t come close to making my personal goal. But I will celebrate the small victories and aim to do better next year. I had a whole list of books that I wanted to read, you know, some were classics, others were books I’d heard about through my internet wanderings and the rest were ones I saw that had interesting covers. Yes, I do judge books by their covers. What of it? In the coming year, I’d like to…

Who Has Two Thumbs, Is Pretty Cool and Has the New Facebook Timeline?
This girl. Yep, I took the plunge and decided to give the new Facebook Timeline a whirl. As much as I complain about the changes to Facebook and as much as I hate waking up to find that ol’ Zuckerberg has tweaked the settings, I admit to being perversely curious about the new Timeline format. To get the new Facebook, I followed the directions provided here by TechCrunch. I have to say, just from my initial look~see, I like it. A lot. I like being able to look over my history and see where I was, who I was with and what I was doing at any given time. I…

Today I Said “Good~Bye”
I remember how nervous I was when I first went to the campus for my interview. I wasn’t sure what to expect ~ would everyone be nice, would it be one of those stuffy interviews where everyone asks questions and no one smiles or would it be relaxed and informal. I went in prepared for the worst and hoping for the best. It was better than I expected and by the end of the day I had a job offer. That was almost ten months ago. Today I had to say good~bye. Have you ever met someone and thought Wow, I can’t believe we just click like this? Well, that’s…

10 Books in 10 Weeks: A Summer Reading Challenge
I’m almost certain PBG over at Dirty Pretty Thangs didn’t mean for her post, 10 Books in 10 Weeks: Our Summer Reading Challenge to become a challenge beyond her own household but it did. I’m joining her for 10 Books in 10 Weeks, which began for her on 20 June and will end on Labor Day. Since I’m a couple of days late ain’t that always the case with me? I’ma start the challenge just as soon as I get home from work today and go from there. My four choices for 28 June to 20 July are: My four choices for 21 July to 21 August are: My two choices for 22…

Library Day in the Life Round 6 Reflection
First of all, I’d like to thank Bobbi at Librarian by Day for putting the Library Day in the Life Project together. The first time I participated in this meme was back in 2008 when I was blogging at Curious Child’s Library Wanderings. I remember I was able to keep track of everyone’s posts and comment here and there, this year whew it has been crazy! Now I know why, according to Bobbi’s reflection post there were just under 250 people signed up on the wiki and about 800 participants on Twitter. That is wild! Congratulations, Bobbi, you should be proud of what you’ve done. I learned so much from reading…

Library Day in the Life Round 6
I’m the Evening Technical and Public Services Librarian at the Miller Library at Keystone College, a private, co~educational college in La Plume, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1868, Keystone College was the first institution of higher learning in Northeast Pennsylvania. I’ve worked here for about 4 months now and I really do enjoy it. The staff is small, only 6 people, so there are a lot of opportunities to spread our wings and be creative with providing services for our students. Right now my major projects involve getting our students connected with us through Facebook and Twitter. I think the biggest stumbling block may be advertising. Even though we have a board with…
