Heart of Haiti: A Woman Who Helped Me
One of my favorite pictures of the three of us with my mother, it was our first snow One of my mother’s favorite sayings is “Give me my flowers while I’m still living.” Meaning, don’t celebrate me and talk about how much you love me after I’m gone, tell me now while I can appreciate it. I used to think that was such a hard thing to say until my father passed away a few years ago and I wrote a post about how much I loved him and would miss him. Seriously, it’s so much easier to tell people you love them while they’re still with you and it’s better…

Religious Civility, Where Has It Gone?
It’s been a couple of days since Resurrection Sunday (Easter to some) and I’m finally in a place where I can write this post without getting teary~eyed… On Sunday morning, I woke up and checked up on all my people like I normally do. I sent out “Happy Resurrection Sunday” messages to a few friends and family and then went on about my day. Later that afternoon, I checked a couple of my usual online haunts (Facebook, Friendfeed and Twitter) to see what people were up to and was shocked at the level of meanness that people were showing towards those who observe Easter/Resurrection Sunday. Out of respect and love…

No Greater Love
John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 15:13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. As parents, we’re conditioned to say that we would sacrifice everything for our children, even our own lives. But would you sacrifice your life for a friend? For a complete stranger? Would you, knowing that your friend, was guilty of a crime, go before the judge and say “Your Honor, here I am, I’ll take my friend’s punishment”? That’s what Jesus did for…

Product Review: Adoption Mama T~Shirts
Ok, for the most part, I’m not one of those people who clicks on the ads that flash in my sidebar when I’m perusing my hotmail. Yep, I still have a hotmail account, it’s one of those things that I keep for sentimental reasons. But, in my defense, I do have several gmail accounts (so can I keep my geek card, please?). Anyway, one day while scanning my email, a picture of a cute little tee popped up on the right side of my screen and I clicked it… The link took me to Adoption Mama, a website that sells “unique adoption~themed designs.” Nope, I haven’t adopted any kids but…

Why Do Moms Kill?
Disclaimer: This is by no means a defense of women who kill their children, this is an argument against entities that ignore the cries for help of mothers who are on the edge… Every time we hear stories about a mother who has killed her children, we ask ourselves why? Why would a mother go to such extreme measures? Why didn’t she just leave if she couldn’t handle it? How come none of her family members stepped in before it was too late? Where was the children’s father? The easy answer is people expect mothering to be instinctual ~ woman gets pregnant, has baby and maternal knowledge, patience and skill…

Are You a Better Mom Because You Have a Smartphone?
I think so. Dori, my Droid, is like an electronic appendage. It’s on my desk when I’m at work. It’s on my hip when I’m cooking dinner. I sleep with it by my bed. This from a girl who initially resisted the cell phone out of fear of black helicopters, government tracking and way too much access for everyone. Yeah, I know, I’m a little paranoid but that just adds to my charm. But ever since my husband talked me in to getting my first cell about 12 years ago I’ve been hopelessly addicted. I’m one of those people who uses my family members’ upgrades so that I can get…

Miss 17 is Going to The Haven
On Saturday, the hubs and I took Miss 17 for a final tour of Lock Haven University before we drop her off for good. This was my husband’s first time seeing the campus, so this trip was more for his sake than for my own. Like I said the first time I wrote about our visit to Lock Haven University, I immediately felt comfortable on the campus and felt like this would be the right place for my daughter. But, more than that, Miss 17 felt at home. This Open House was much more spectacular than the first one that we attended. First of all, there were a lot more…

Mommy, What Color Were Our Eggs?
One of the things about having four children that I love and hate the most is that my oldest daughter has taken it upon herself to parent the younger kids. Actually, it’s kinda cool that she mothers them because it’s less work for me. However, she has a bad habit of telling them everything she knows. Even when I tell beg her not to… When my oldest daughter was about ten years old, she started asking questions about babies and where they come from, how they get into the mommy’s stomach and all of those other buggy little questions that kids ask. Now, I have always operated under the “use…
