Coffee Talk {Living Outside the Stacks}

Wow, it’s been a long time since we’ve chatted. How’ve you been? I’ve been OK. Just busy with, well, life… You know how that is, right?

Anyway, I’d like to welcome you to Coffee Talk. In case you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stuff that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And, who knows, there may even be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun.

So grab a cup of coffee {or tea or whatever floats your boat} and let’s talk…

1. Daniele Watts, an African American actress who was in the movie “Django Unchained” is accusing Los Angeles police of racism for cuffing her while responding to complaint. The actress says that she and her boyfriend were targeted because she’s black and her boyfriend is white. I read the story and listened to her interview on CNN yesterday morning and I’m gonna to have call nonsense. Someone reported that a couple was engaged in a sex act in a Mercedes; she admits that she and her boyfriend were “making out” but that it had ceased by the time the cops arrived. In the video, you can hear the cop ask for her ID several times and you can hear her refusing several times. She then throws out the race card, the actor card, and the “it’s my right to make out with my boyfriend” card as excuses for why she won’t comply with the officer’s request. insert eye roll here

Girlfriend, had you just followed your boyfriend’s lead and given the officer your ID, you never would’ve been cuffed and detained. As a general rule, when the cops ask you to stop and put your hands up, you should just do it. If they ask for your ID, give it to them. I’ve been followed, profiled, pulled over, etc. and every time, I’ve complied with the requests. Even when I knew the stop was unjustified. I’m looking at you, Mr. Police Officer who pulled me over and asked me why my kids were in the car with me instead of at school. It’s just easier. Yes, it’s frustrating. Yes, I’ve cried. But I’ve never ended up in cuffs or face down in the asphalt.

Here’s the deal, there are enough people who’re dealing with genuine race based discrimination out there that people don’t need to make things up or bring crap on themselves… A whole lot of Jesus and a little bit of common sense, people, that’s all it requires to get through this life.

2. I’ve stopped watching Extant and Under the Dome. Both shows had me wondering what the heck is going on here? And not in a good way either. But Hell on Wheels? If you are not watching that show, stop everything you’re doing and catch up. Then get back at me so we can discuss Sunday’s episode. Oh. Em. Gee. Anson Mount and Common had me all in my feelings.

3. You guys, I love Squeekerz. Goodness knows, I love that dog. I cried right along with the kids when he ran away. And I cried even harder when he came back with a pregnant cat. But there is no way in the world, I’m going to walk around with a purse made out of his fur. Yep, someone is making dog fur purses. And people are buying them. The rational side of me says this is no different than carrying a leather or cowhide bag but there’s another part of me that goes ewwwww…. But I will say one thing, they are GORGEOUS!!!! shudder

4. Coffee served in an ice cream cone? Yes, please.

Talk to me, what’s got you scratching your head?
