I’d like to welcome you to Coffee Talk. If you’re new here, this is where I share some of the great and not~so~great stuff that I find on the web. Topics range from news stories that leave me scratchin’ my head to DIYs that I think are absolutely clever. And, who knows, there may even be a recipe thrown in here or there just for fun.

Ever since I upgraded from my Fitbit Charge HR to the Fitbit Blaze I’ve been asked my opinion, so I decided to do a review. Let me start by saying: Fitbit has been an integral part of my weight loss program since my first Fitbit purchase in January. In that time, I’ve lost approximately 10 lbs {that’s without being consistent in my workouts and eating plans}. So, yeah, you really do have to balance the eating and the working out, but seeing everything on your wrist {or on your phone} certainly helps.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

PROS

  • KEEPS ME MOTIVATED!!!!!!
  • Intuitive activity tracking
  • Detailed workout summaries
  • Fitstar Guided Workouts {starter package}
  • Smart phone notification
  • Silent alarms {the gentle vibration really will wake you up}
  • Customizable watch face and band
  • Easy to use interface
  • Automatic sleep tracker
  • Color touchscreen
  • Approximately 5 days worth of battery life {I charge mine every time I take a shower, even if it doesn’t need it}

CONS

  • Expensive {especially if you’re looking for a “real” smartwatch}
  • There’s no ability to respond to messages using the Blaze, so you still have to have your phone nearby if you need to communicate
  • The watch piece has to be removed from the watch band in order to charge
  • Not waterproof, so not good for swimmers {it is water resistant though}
  • The tips to change the straps are tiny, so if you have big fingers it may be hard to manipulate

OVERALL

I love love love my Fitbit Blaze and am incredibly happy that I upgraded. It’s definitely an investment, but I think it’s worth it when you consider the health benefits. I like that I can see my individual workout stats {and daily stats} with the flick of a wrist. This may not sound like much, but when you work a crazy schedule, don’t feel like working out, or can’t workout, being able to look at your wrist to see your caloric balance is important.

There are also a few “little” things that I like about the Blaze: I can control my music directly from the Blaze, it syncs wirelessly, and it has PurePulse heart rate monitoring. And with the interchangeable straps, I’ve been able to integrate the tracker seamlessly into my wardrobe, you can check out the various images on Instagram. I own the plum/silver version with an additional strap in black.

Last, but not least, I love being able to participate in challenges with my friends and family. And, let me tell, Fitbit has made me crazy competitive. I don’t know how many times I’ve walked around my house in circles so that I can get that one extra step. But, more than that, there’s that thrill I get when my wrist vibrates and I see the streamers when I hit my 10,000 step goal.

So, overall, yes, I think it’s worth the purchase especially if you do a variety of workouts. If you’re looking for less expensive options, consider both the Flex and the Charge HR. I owned both of them prior to owning the Blaze and liked them.
