    The Handwriting Meme

    17 February 2011 / 11 Comments

It’s so funny that I stumbled across this meme on Allie’s blog, Wardrobe Oxygen, because Miss 17 and I were just talking about how writing is becoming a lost art.  Seriously, when I teach classes at the college, I just want to dedicate a couple of classes to writing basics ~ you know, mostly how to write so that I can read what the student has written.  As much as I love technology, I hate what it has done to penmanship. My mother taught me how to print and my father taught me how to write in cursive.  My mother is left handed, I’m right handed.  This was no easy…

    I Love My Kids But It’s On Now {In the Family Room}

    11 February 2011 / 7 Comments

I like to think I’m a good mother.  I’m firm when I need to be (I’ve stripped their rooms to the bare necessities for punishment) and playful most other times (I’ve sent all four of them the following text message at the same time: “Don’t tell the others but you’re my favorite” just to make them laugh).  But I was not prepared for their revenge… Wednesday night I arrived home from work to a semi~dark house, a little weird but not enough to raise my suspicions.  Usually someone leaves the hall light on for me, instead the living room lamp was on.  No biggie, maybe the light blew out. So…

What Do You Think of the New Facebook Fan Page Profile?

    10 February 2011 / 2 Comments

Remember a few weeks ago when Facebook rolled out the new profile pages for its users and everyone was upset about some of the features, namely the row of pictures plastered across the top of the page?  Well, guess what?  Now Facebook has rolled out pretty much the same new profile page for fan pages as well. Here are some of the changes I noticed to the new profile: 1.  The most recent photos posted to the wall or that have been tagged by the page owner form a “banner” across the top of the page.  Photos posted by fans don’t appear in the stream.  A nice way to highlight…

Library Day in the Life Round 6 Reflection

    29 January 2011 / 4 Comments

First of all, I’d like to thank Bobbi at Librarian by Day for putting the Library Day in the Life Project together.  The first time I participated in this meme was back in 2008 when I was blogging at Curious Child’s Library Wanderings.  I remember I was able to keep track of everyone’s posts and comment here and there, this year whew it has been crazy!  Now I know why, according to Bobbi’s reflection post there were just under 250 people signed up on the wiki and about 800 participants on Twitter.  That is wild!  Congratulations, Bobbi, you should be proud of what you’ve done. I learned so much from reading…

Library Day in the Life Round 6

    24 January 2011 / 13 Comments

I’m the Evening Technical and Public Services Librarian at the Miller Library at Keystone College, a private, co~educational college in La Plume, Pennsylvania.  Founded in 1868, Keystone College was the first institution of higher learning in Northeast Pennsylvania. I’ve worked here for about 4 months now and I really do enjoy it.  The staff is small, only 6 people, so there are a lot of opportunities to spread our wings and be creative with providing services for our students.  Right now my major projects involve getting our students connected with us through Facebook and Twitter. I think the biggest stumbling block may be advertising.  Even though we have a board with…

Library Day in the Life Project Round 6

    19 January 2011 / 3 Comments

The 6th round of the Library Day in the Life Project is hosted by Bobbi at Librarian by Day and will begin on Monday, 24 January.  I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all and reading about the lives of my fellow librarians.  My hope is that by participating in this project that you all will see how vital library services are to your communities and that you will step forward and allow your voices to be heard when government officials consider slashing services. Family Movie Night: Change of Plans

    7 January 2011 / 2 Comments

Has your life worked out the way you planned?  I know mine sure didn’t.  When I was younger, I thought I’d graduate from high school, go to college and begin a career as a globe~trotting journalist or spy.  Instead, I graduated from high school, joined the Army, got married, had 4 children and became a librarian.  But, you know what, sometimes the most unexpected surprises come when your plans get changed. A few weeks ago, Modern Moms provided me with the opportunity to preview a movie called Change of Plans the next movie in Proctor & Gamble’s and Walmart’s successful Family Movie Night.  What an awesome opportunity!  This movie shows…

Book Review: Perfect Peace by Daniel Black

    4 January 2011 / 3 Comments

BOOK DESCRIPTION The heartbreaking portrait of a large, rural southern family’s attempt to grapple with their mother’s desperate decision to make her newborn son into the daughter she will never have When the seventh child of the Peace family, named Perfect, turns eight, her mother Emma Jean tells her bewildered daughter, “You was born a boy. I made you a girl. But that ain’t what you was supposed to be. So, from now on, you gon’ be a boy. It’ll be a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to it, and this’ll be over after while.” From this point forward, his life becomes a bizarre kaleidoscope of events.…
