The Banana Incident of 1978
I don’t think it’s any secret that I love monkeys. No, that’s not true. I’m obsessed with monkeys. And lest you think it’s just me, my cousin has informed me that her daughter also has an intense love for monkeys as does another cousin of mine. A family thing? Probably not, the rest of the family is totally repulsed by our monkey love. Anyway, my love for monkeys began when I was quite young and continues to this day. Just ask my loving and patient husband who has to stare at a monkey every time he, ahem, avails himself of the facilities. Seriously, if you want to know the real…

I Got PINKED!
I’d like to thank Stephanie at Shear Tease in Wyoming, PA for getting me PINKED in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, I go pink in the hopes that we will find a cure for this awful disease. I do it to celebrate the survivors in my family: my mother~in~law, Gloria, and my aunt, Aunt Sylvia. I also do it to in memory of my great~aunts who did not survive. If you know anyone who has been touched by this disease, please consider donating to my friends, Mylynka and Lupe, who are participating in the Susan G. Komen 3~Day for a Cure. Talk to your librarians on Twitter, engage other library patrons, use Twitter to set up book group meetings or to share movie suggestions. The UN Considers Appointing an Alien Ambassador
I had to create a whole new category called “WTH? Files” for this post. I tried to squeeze it in to one of the other categories, but this story is so flippin’ bizarre that I couldn’t even fake it. Seriously, this deserves a “WTbleep” but this is a family blog…. The UN (as in the United Nations that occupies square footage in New York) is thinking about appointing an ambassador to the alien world. *blink* According to Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman, will be named UN ambassador to extraterrestrials (pending approval from the UN scientific advisory committees and the General Assembly because, you know, that would legitimize the appointment). Currently the director of the…

Have a Smart Phone? Use the Barcode Scanner App to Take Living Outside the Stacks with You on the Go!
Do you have a smart phone? Have you noticed that little barcode reader app in the App Store? Well, I did and, honestly, I had no idea what I’d use it for but I downloaded it anyway. Hey, I figured it’s free so give it a try and if I hate it ~ no harm, no foul. I heart it! It’s probably one of my most played with apps. I use it when I’m shopping and I can’t find the price on something, scan it with the barcode reader and voilá there’s the price. Or if I run across a book and I want to find out information about it,…

I’ve Been Busy Performing My Civic Duty
Guess who had jury duty?! I did! I did! Ok, now let me explain something to you. I have wanted jury duty since forever. Ok, maybe not since forever but at least since I became hooked on the Law and Order franchise. So when I received my summons a few weeks back, I actually squealed with delight. Reality is nothing like television. On Monday morning I reported to the Luzerne County Courthouse at 8:30, filled out a basic questionnaire and then waited. And waited. And waited. I’m so glad that someone told me to take along some reading material otherwise I would have been bored to tears. On a side…

15 Years Ago Today…
I gave birth to Twin A and Twin B, also known as Jazmine and Brandon. But, really, their story begins nine days earlier….. On 11 September 1995, my husband and I showed up at the hospital for a routine OB visit. The baby was due in nine days and, almost overnight it seemed, I had put on about 15 or 20 lbs and my pregnancy gait had shifted into full on waddle. Furthermore, the baby was bouncing all over the place. Don’t babies normally slow down the closer you get to the due date? Anyway, Tony and two~year~old Symone waited in the waiting room while the doctor pulled out the…

RIP: Elvis the Hamster
This has been a tough week for my children. This morning, Elvis the Hamster passed away, eight days after we lost his friend, Koda the Hamster. Miss 13 and Miss 14 were concerned that Elvis not be alone when he took his final breath, so I sat with him when they couldn’t be there and Squeekerz, our Jack Russell Terrier and Chihuahua mix, sat with him the rest of the time. Elvis was definitely the friendlier of the two hamsters, he loved to be held and talked to. In fact, if you walked past his cage, he would immediately stop whatever he was doing and run over to the door,…
