    Happy Birthday to Us

    We were so cute!! You guys, my sister and I are celebrating 46 spins around the sun. I’m so grateful to Jesus for each and every breath… For every display of love… And for undeserved grace and mercy. My sister and I have always known the dramatic story of our birth.  Mom used it as a way to highlight my our need for attention since birth.  And as I tell you the story, you’ll understand that we come by our dramatics honestly.  Thank you, Mom and Dad… It was about 5 AM on a Saturday morning in 1973 when  my dad went racing down the streets of Washington, D.C. in…

    Happy Birthday to Twin A and B {Repost for their 18th Birthday}

    I gave birth to Twin A and Twin B 18 years ago today.  But, really, their story began nine days earlier….. On 11 September 1995, The Hubs and I showed up at the hospital for a routine OB visit.  The baby was due in nine days and, almost overnight it seemed, I had put on about 15 or 20 lbs and my pregnancy gait had shifted into full on waddle.  Furthermore, the baby was bouncing all over the place. Don’t babies normally slow down the closer you get to the due date? Anyway, The Hubs and the two-year-old sat in the waiting room while the doctor pulled out the measuring…

    I’m Guest Posting at the mahogany way birth cafe

    Almost 16 years ago, I traded in my sporty little white Ford Escort GT for a mini van.  Not a “swagga wagon” but a big teal green got a pack of screaming kids in the back and gooey stuff between the seats mini van.  I was twenty~two years old and in no way prepared for three car seats (!), but nine days before I was due to give birth, the doctor announced that I was having twins… A few weeks ago, Darcel from  The Mahogany Way tweeted about a desire to collect birth stories from women of color for her blog, the mahogany way birth cafe, a birth talk blog…

  • About Me

    17 Years Ago Today…

    I gave birth to my first child.  Like all mother’s I remember that day as if it were yesterday…. It was a hot and sticky day and I was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana and I was 4 days past my due date.  To say I was miserable would be putting it mildly.  I woke up early that morning with a slight tightening of my stomach but nothing that indicated that labor would be occurring any time soon.  My doctor had scheduled a check up for later that afternoon, so I went to work and waited for my appointment.  I was literally praying that the doctor would induce labor.  Being…

    We Were Drama Queens from Birth

    Oh how I wish I’d found this on Sunday!  My sister and I have always known the story of our birth, Mom used it as a way to highlight our need for drama since birth.  And as I tell you the story, you’ll understand that we come by our dramatics honestly.  Thank you, Mom and Dad. It was about 2 AM on a Saturday morning in 1973 when  my dad went racing down the streets of Washington, D.C. in his little Datsun.  With dual horns blaring and my mother tensing up in labor, my dad violated all sorts of traffic laws.  Really, what do stop lights mean when your wife…
